And yet Windows runs on millions of devices around the world from dozens of OEMs, and they're all updated straight from MS' servers no matter the hardware configuration.

Android sold its soul to get on carriers and to be adopted by OEMs by giving them full stack control. This is the price they paid for the marketshare they have now. It's a legit criticism of Android. Stop defending it.

Why is Apple the only fucking company that keeps their phones updated? It doesn't make any fucking sense. It can't possibly be an exclusvely OS-level problem, because Windows, Linux, BSD, etc. all allow you to maintain an updated system for years as long as the OS can be installed. What the hell is the point of spending money on a good phone that won't break or shit the bed after a year if the people who make it just want you to throw it out after that same year? Smartphones fucking suck, but it feels like the only company not actively trying to fuck you over here is Apple.

There are a bunch of dozen arm cpus for phones. I think google has the power and capabilities to offer updates for all android devices. Surely they can make a plug-and-play platform for Android, not only to make Android ecosystem-wide updates, but also allow hardware upgrades with no hassle.

The Nexus line was the only decent line of Android phones. Googlel is delusional if they think they can price the Pixel dollar for dollar the same amount as the ishit and expect everyone to buy it.

They should have kept the midrange subsidized Nexus line going and get proper marketing and supply chain management. Their incapability to do this is hilarious considering they're a megacorp that likes to throw money at everything
>>
>>61113461
All you have to do is look at who makes the chips that actually go in phones and it becomes readily apparent that the landscape is tiny. Microsoft has to deal with millions of peripherals, storage controllers, sound cards, graphics chipsets, etc. Phones do not have this much variability. 90% of everything shoved on the market is snapdragon and beyond that it is cellular modems, cameras, and other shit. Even Linux can hot plug and use webcams and 3g/lte modems out of box nowadays.
>>
>>61113520
>Microsoft has to deal with millions of peripherals, storage controllers, sound cards, graphics chipsets, etc.
drivers are one thing, but i'm not referring to drivers, i'm referring to the basic system architecture
hardware interfaces and addresses
windows can look for hardware the on the same interfaces at the same addresses on any pc, as it has been standardized, last i checked this is not the case with phone SoC's

The SoCs are literally either ARMv7 or v8 and almost all of them are snapdragon and are cranked out a dime a dozen for multiple OEMs. Maybe the bootloader process is different, maybe some other methods are different, but this is literally nothing that google can't fix by flexing their trademark and telling OEMs to come into compliance or else not use the name 'Android' or google play services.

That's the part I hate about Apple and their signing.
You can downgrade if you record the key signing authorization when you upgrade to an os and subsequently past it but you needed to have planned for it.
I leave my wifi off on my iphone so it doesn't download or nag about updating else it's a pain.

It's 32-bit only, and it's not an actual downgrade. It's a partitioning hack that lets you fuck with the bootloader and partition/file system mounting to boot into a second OS. It only applies to stuff made before 2013, and you need a jailbreak for it with ftp0 enabled.

This is what 95% of people use phones for. I guess I forgot taking pictures. The only reason to worry about security is if you actually DO use some H1B-coded Faceberg or Snapchat app, in which case you deserve getting hacked desu.

Seriously, what kind of security threats do you think phones face anyway?

sure, whatever you say. Come back when you leave the basement. In the real world phones have a ton of extended use cases in corporate and personal deployments and have more sensitive data tied to them than any other device due to their privacy abusive design nature.

What? Get a blackberry, nobody on /g/ has employers that require a seperate "work" phone. OS "security" isn't going to affect the GSM signals shooting out of your phone. Unless you use some pooloo social media app, any phone is as reliable as a dumbphone insofar as security.

This was going through my head as I was signing my contract for an iPhone 6 as it is cheap as fuck right now with my provider. Let me tell you, I love it. It somehow manages to feel way better than an android, (coming from a Moto X Play). I think I'll get another iPhone in the future, but that damn headphone jack though.
>>
>>61115124
Is it stable though? I mean the official releases not nightly releases.
>>
>>61116220
I encountered only 1 issue on the nightly releases. It stopped LineageOS from auto-updating in TWRP; I had to manually do it. The stable releases probably never had that issue though.

Kek, my company will soon run hardware and software modded $25 routers as part of their automation network.
I literally bought like 4 tplink routers and soldered my own external antenna connectors on them and flashed openwrt.
It's sure going to be a tough one to explain to them why I spent $150 to not have to buy the vendors $40,000 solution.

No, more like building a wireless bridge to connect pieces of equipment to the previous existing wifi for data analytics.
In the past I did hardwired, but the equipment moves building a lot so fuck that.
The vendors solution, I fucking shit you not, is a custom firmware wrt54g.
>>
do custom ROMs still make your camera turn to shit?
>>
>>61116394
Alright, I'll take the bait.

Android is open source. The Play Store is closed source. Lots of custom ROMs like Lineage OS allow you to skip installing the play store or anything Google. Therefore you can have an Android device without a direct umbilical chord to Google. Usually when people skip installing the Google Play Store, they install a repository like F-Droid, which only contains open source software.

That lineage os is a joke. I had it installed on my g901f for a couple of weeks and i can say the following:
-mobile data was not working after deactivating wifi, not even turning on and off the airplane mode
-mobile data was not working minutes after you were restarting the phone
-there is no vibration intensity settings, the phone will vibrate at full strenght no matter what
-videos were being recoreded with low sound or no sound at all
-camera is shit overall, there are literally no settings for it, except for "brighter screen". if you tried to use it with flash, it will break the app and have to restart the phone
-video cast not working
-bluetooth audio playback leading to glitches
-randomly the main speaker not working and the sound was coming from the talking speaker near the selfie camera
-random glitches overall
-weekly updates but not telling which one you have updated, even though you did install it earlier and have again the option to install again
-watching webm videos on 4chan will restart the phone

We've all been there.
But hey, years ago you could downgrade at least. Not sure if you can still do that.
>>
>>61112603
But anon, Samsung devices always had 2.5+ year of updates. My Note 4 gets monthly updates and received Marshmallow.

My HTC10 and P10 Plus also receives updates every now and then.
Some manufacturer may lag behind, but...
- You will get your two years at least. Give Huawei time.
- You get 3 years of warranty and other shit with "Huawei VIP" service that comes default.
- Even if a device is "left behind", 90%+ of the system is modular, I mean Android 2.1 just lost Play Store support BUT IT CAN STILL INSTALL APKs. I maen it's fucking Android 2.1, son. Think about it.

I mean sure, software wise, it's great. But give up everything else only to get software support? I don't know...
>>
>>61118795
it was originally a Windows phone I assume.
>>
>>61122048
Nah son. Happened to me with two iPhones.
The updates are ok for 2-3 versions. They work fine.
Then the third-fourth big major update comes.
(Usually the last, or last two updates to a phone.)

That is when they decide to fuck you over.
Everything becomes sluggish, slower. There are 10000 tutorials popping up this time what to disable, which god you can pray to, etc. Of course, no setting will ever bring back the old speed.
In the past you could downgrade, but that's not true anymore.
Also good luck, it's not Play Store where you can just use an Android 2.3 for a decade.

tl;dr: Stop being poor if you want to be an iToddler.
Pay some premium "exchange my phone yearly" plan.
>>
>>61122070
So it's a problem that people can have fun, share their work with the others?
That is bad? And you are on fucking /g/?
WOW. Congratulations.

Btw the shit you posted is basically when someone manages to follow the official Cyanogen/Lineage porting guide, manages to compile a .zip magically somehow and decides to share it. Of course, the drivers are not correct, of course, nothing really works...
But hey, you know what. That dude did something. Unlike you.

He may be having explosive diarrhea 10 times a day near the Ganges but he compiled LineageOS for a new device. Meanwhile, you just keep shitposting here.
>>
>>61122660
well i am sad to hear this then, i assumed that at least one day if i decided to go for an iphone i would be taken care of but it looks like there is no solace anywhere.

i dont understand why its so hard to evade getting assraped by a hardware company, you would think actively hurting your customer like this would not pay off
>>
>>61122778
>you would think actively hurting your customer like this would not pay off
But that's the point. Most iPhone/iPad customers are not exactly rocket scientists.
They pay huge amounts of cash each month (some unlimited plan, and some crazy high monthly payment for the device), just to keep the device.

Then the update comes. Device gets slow. Well, you cannot send dick pics on Snapchat on a slow device.
So they visit their carrier and even though they just managed to pay off their debt/payment, they sign up again.
And the cycle continues.

Rich people just simply replace them, same shit, minus the payment problem.
>>
>>61122836
yeah i understand the motivation but i'm saying you would think after awhile there would be some sort of sentiment among the masses to either avoid/boycott the products that have been so unreliable (in a sense) or at the very least have the sense to try something else to see how the longevity is

This used to be true, might still be. I upgraded my 4s to whatever iOS came out with the 5 and it slowed down and my signal would cut out every 4-5 minutes. But the next time I upgraded, I think it was a 5s to the 6 OS or something, it didn't have any problems. Maybe they fixed it but OS upgrades could definitely cause problems in the past.

Well, I wouldn't think my bait thread would receive 200 replies but thats /g/ for you. Anyways you guys need to acknowledge that software support vise iOS will be always superior to Android. No normie will sit on a computer and spend hours trying to figure out what Lineage OS is and how do they unlock their bootloader. It just doesn't make sense that they can buy an iPhone instead of a Samshit, since they are sold at the price anyway, and actually use a stable device for the next 3 years.

Thanks but no thanks. Verizon shitcans the 2G network in 2019, meaning phone manufacturers will start moving away from Qualcomm modems to Intel ones. Once that happens, and phone manufacturers aren't required to use Snapdragons in their US phones to get custom prices on the modems (Google is working on custom silicon, Samsung already has Exynos) then Google and Samsung will dictate how many years they provide phone updates instead of Qualcomm saying 2 and go fuck yourself.
