The biggest hurdle the German automakers face in going to pure electric will actually probably come from their own unions. The German autoworker unions, particularly in some of the suppliers, are fairly resistant to automation. Electric drivetrains are much better suited to the kind of automation and efficiency gains that that would spell trouble for their workforce.

You do realize that the subsidies Tesla has received are a literal drop in the bucket compared to oil/gas industry subsidies. Not to mention the $10+ billion the car industry received in bailouts during the recession.

The same government hands out literally billions of dollars in incentives and tax credits to individual corporations every single year. Not only do corporations not pay taxes, they pay *negative* taxes. The government pays *them*. Every. Single. Year.

Elon Musk will never be the best at anything, because there are no consequences if he doesn't. He keeps burning through cash on everything he does, and people keep giving him more, so there's no incentive to be efficient with the money, or be the best at something. He'll just keep spending other people's money until they stop giving it to him.

When there's no consequences for wasting money, there's no incentive to become the best.

Whenever he is refuting something, either that thing can be refuted by common sense or basic and he brings nothing useful to the conversation, or it is viable but requires nontrivial engineering which is not his area of expertise. The hyperloop video is one of those cases, where he ends up using arguments to incredulity instead of actual math and him being right or not is essentially a coin flip.

Just need a cleaner way to produce the panels, which is in the works. There are stores that run entirely off of solar power, it's definitely capable of powering homes and worth the investment. Of course, we'll always need other sources of energy because solar power is less efficient in winter and doesn't work at night, but still.

>>61103686
Yeah, his underground highways idea is pretty stupid. With that being said, the tunnel boring industry probably needs some outside competition. I wouldn't be shocked if something good actually comes out of the work being done at the Boring Company with regards to cheaper, more modular and reusable TBM's.

Also, I'll let you in on a little secret, the main reason he got interested in boring is so that we can make an underground tunnel across Crenshaw going from our main building to our main parking garage. Crenshaw Blvd is a pain to get across, especially at night when people drive stupid fast. We were going to build an overhead bridge but since the reused F9 was put on display at the corner, and because the city wouldn't allow it, I think due of potential closings of Crenshaw during construction, a tunnel makes more sense.

>>61108792
He really is only primarily focused on 2 things, Tesla and SpaceX. I would say he spends about 70% of his time at SpaceX. Once the Model 3 ships in quantity I expect him to spend even more time here. The Boring Company is just a fun side project for him, OpenAI doesn't require much of his time, Neuralink is still in very early stages and he mostly just overseas that as an interesting investment, and he has zero to do with any of the hyperloop companies.

Not that guy but the petrol engine is an optional extra. There have also been mumblings of a longer range all electric version to be released "soon".

Except for the complete lack of real world testing like every other auto manufacturer performs.
Ask British Leyland how well not testing their autos worked.

They didn't though. Tesla did use many common parts though to reduce risk. Practices like this is what causes Leyland reliability problems in the 80's and a bad rap even after the issues were fixed.

I'm pretty sure Tesla drives their cars on test tracks and logs tons of miles on open roads before they sell them.

I'll give you the other categories, but Boeing beating him to Mars? Look at his rocket design versus Boeing. Boeing's is a fucking joke.

For example, SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets are fully reusable meanwhile the brain trust at Boeing and Lockheed have an absolutely retarded proposal for their Vulcan where they reuse the engine only by ejecting it and catching it in mid-air with a helicopter. Literally the kind of tacticool nonsense a child would come up with.

Of all the shitty companies out there, SpaceX has the best shot at Mars. Realistically though, humans on Mars will never happen in our lifetimes.
>>
As long as we get electric cards
And get to go to Mars
And become transhumans
And find better energy sources
And find better transportation systems

I don't care who does it first. Just get it done.

Musk is a smart guy, he cashed out on sxam projects like solar panels and electric cars, but at least now he has a private space program.

Hyperloop can totally work though, and be like taking a plane but cheap and without having to wait at the airport and having yoyr butt probed.

Hyperloop will not work for the same reasons that high speed rail will not work in America, and the rest of the world already has high speed rail so they have no need for the hypermeme. It working has nothing to do with practicality.

Y'all are crying that he is getting beat by all the other companies but don't realize that if he never would have done it there'd be no progress in these sectors.. Or atleast very little. don't all of BMWs electric-vehicles cost more than the competition given the performance, and they all need anti-gimping addons aka pay to make it a shitty hybrid that runs on gas? might as well just get an older prius that costs 1/10 as much and goes 400 miles.

>In 1966 a technician at NASA Houston was decompressed to vacuum in a space-suit test accident. This case is discussed by Roth in the reference above. He lost consciousness in 12-15 seconds. The cheaper Model 3 will be more successful, most people can't afford a Model S, and at least he got other companies to start producing electric cars, and that's a huge achievement on it's own.

I don't believe that. people who want actual electric don't want hybrids. also I'm sure the tesla drives much better. the prius is a great a to b car and it's a relatively easy, cheap, and practical car to own, but it is the opposite of a drivers car. anyone who actually enjoys driving would be annoyed by it immensely. it does have a crazy tight turn radius though, great for the city.
