When the 15" MacBook Pro had a frame with hinges attached to it instead of them sensibly being attached to a backplate, so they constantly broke like paperclips.
Apple experience and quality.

-2008
When the graphics chips were dying on all the Apple computers. Apple was forced to help by a class action lawsuit. How that worked? They put an Apple diagnostic disc into your computer to decide whether they may or may not help you, based on whether the test passes. Of course, it can't work if you don't have a fucking functional graphics chip.
Apple experience and quality.

-2009
"Unibody" 15" MacBook Pro. Except it was made out of 2 pieces stuck together with adhesive. Not only that, it was so well designed with such build quality, the fan exhausting the heat these MacTurd Pros built up, was positioned to exhaust into the adhesive directly. End result: Computers falling apart everywhere.
Apple experience and quality.

-2010
A1286 model with the 2850 board, which was failing because the sensors would keep the fans at 1000 RPM when FinalCut Pro was rendering and running a video for 20 minutes straight.
Apple experience and quality.

820-2915 board comes out. Throttling the CPU out of the box with no dust, at 70 fahrenheit room temp. A $2000 machine, throttling and functioning worse than a shitty $300 Acer at that time.
Apple experience and quality.

-~2010
iPhone 4 comes out. $600 phone that you could not hold in your hand without dropping a call. Apple is not at fault, it's your fault for not holding the phone correctly on your fucking face!!!
Apple experience and quality.

>your Apple computer is stolen
Apple service policy: Doesn't allow them to give the phone number of the owner to the FUCKING POLICE, when the computer is found, has the Find My Mac software and info, and is reported stolen!

Apple users: The wife that gets beaten daily by the husband, calls it "love".

1. The man who made the comic speaks about problems which are OS specific and not hardware specific, so that's one portion of IQ points off his scale.
2. The custom built PC is a buffet. You can pick any food you want, healthy or unhealthy, in any quantity, and eat it in a comfortable environment with proper cooling and airconditioning.

The Mac is prison ration. It looks well organized and neat on the plate, but you have no other choice, and you have to eat it in a uncomfortable environment surrounded by heat and danger.

Apple is the only consumer Unix vendor still in the business, you don't buy a mac for the hardware you buy it for the support.
>Apple's engineers equate to a dedicated sysadmin for your OS
>stellar physical support/warranty (walk in with a broken one, walk out with a new one)
>high physical availability (stores with support agents are everywhere, globally)
>even third party vendors cater to Apple products
The hardware is fine, the actual physical body which is more important than people seem to think is also nice but the support is legitimately unmatched. Remember these are made for business and they fit well for that use. I personally think the software and software support is nice as well but that's moot given that you can install anything you like on it if you disagree with OS X.

People act like the only thing you're buying is the hardware. What other options do you have as a consumer? Everything may as well be "you're on your own" for the physical shit and "it's Microsoft's problem not ours" for the software end of things. You can only come close when you start looking at enterprise laptops that cost just as much as a typical macbook for the same level of support.

Because macs still "just work" out of the box right after purcahse a lot better than some cheap chink computer you buy at walmart or whatever.

>inb4 build your own
the majority of people have jobs and aren't autistic.

Anyways your cheapo plastic computers that come preinstalled with Windows have loads of issues out of the box. Usually have to download proper drivers for your wireless card, graphics drivers, etc. And Windows STILL constantly shits the bed every five minutes with BSODs, malware, and failed Windows Updates.
>Windows users literally can't stop restarting their computers

On top of that, ordinary Windows users have to purchase a subscription to an antivirus protection suite. They don't have time for "Common Sense 2017" because they don't have time to stay up-to-date with all the latest ways that hackers have found to exploit the largest operating system platform on the planet. So by using a Mac, they would have safety in relative obscurity.

The average Windows user also has a computer that suffers from "Windows rot," which is basically their computer getting slower over time due to accumulated bloat, malware, and fragmentation due to Windows' garbage file-system. So they have to keep reinstalling Windows every year or so. Most of them probably don't even know how to make backups of their files, so they lose everything.

Macs are literally the best option for the majority of people who don't understand computers and don't need or want to.

The most insulting thing about the iPhone6 Touch Disease is that they won't admit they fucked up by not underfilling the TouchIC, they just blame the user even though prior phones don't have the issue, because smaller and underfilled, and later phones don't have the issue, because underfilled and shield over IC helps prevent bending.

They fucked up. They know they fucked up because they changed the design to mitigate it, but they won't admit it because then thousands of people wouldn't need to upgrade their phone.

Putting together a computer isn't so difficult that you can't do it if you have a full time job. Most people just don't realize how easy it is and don't want to risk it.

>And Windows STILL constantly shits the bed every five minutes with BSODs, malware, and failed Windows Updates.
Absolutely false.

>Windows users literally can't stop restarting their computers
Absolutely false.

While I agree that Macs are definitely a good choice for people who don't understand computers and don't want to do anything other than browse the Internet and check emails you paint Windows as far worse than it really is.
>>

my work still has like 200 of these shitters laying around in storage, while that certainly happened a bigger complaint I found was that the fucking latches on them stop working. You literally can't close it properly

Also the fact that like we had to replace ~90% of their batteries when they were actually in use due to lipo inflation
>>

seriously, fuck apple's "support"
I work at a college and we have a few maclabs, they're the worst fucking things to repair because they always break and always in the weirdest ways. Shit like NICs dying or backlights burning out really rusttles my jimmies. We have ~30% call in rate over the lifetime of the devices and every time I have to drive to the next city over and deal with the faggots at the apple store it's a nightmare. Educational mac care and they still treat you like shit, they act like they're doing us the biggest favor in the world by fixing faulty devices. It's seriously annoying when one lab we had with macs all from the same batch had roughly half of them all lose the backlight on the half with the cpu. Even worse they only let you bring a few in at a time, like 3 or some shit. Nothing like wasting multiple days just to have to get their mistakes repaired. Not only that but no one on the phones, even their "educational mac care specialists" seemed to know what it really entailed and were of no assistance past treating us like consumers.

Dell on the other hand, next day service for parts and technicians with minimal hassle.

I'm blaming MicroShit for not being able to properly restart its worse-than-trash OS.

Microshit should know that when i'm pressing on the restart button, i want my pc to be restarted. It's so fucking easy, yet so hard to make a good implementation... after so many decades.

Pressing the restart button and selecting restart in Start Menu are two different things.

One closes all the applications before starting a reboot and the other hard reboots.

You misconfigured your shit and it bit you in the ass. Ring your landlord and have him restart your computer.

Does Apple release updates on their desktops/laptops that purposely cripple them like they do with their phones?
>>
>>61083823
Apple has a pretty vicious hardware/software upgrade treadmill.

I resisted updating 10.4 for years; IMO that was the high water mark for OS X, everything has basically been downhill from there. If I could still run 10.4 plus bugfixes and security updates, with modern software, I would.

But that's not possible. They push out new versions of the OS, along with new versions of development tools, which produce software that's not backwards-compatible past a certain point, such that eventually you can't run new software without installing major (0.1) updates. Apple's own products are the worst for this, but eventually you lose 3rd party apps as well.

Even if you resist the demands of new software, you'll eventually get forced to upgrade via hardware. Each generation of Apple hardware has a minimum OS version, keeping you from going back too far. For instance, Mac Pro "quad core" and 8-core systems won't run OS 10.4; Nehalem-based machines won't run 10.6. And Apple has purposely killed off its compatibility layers, dropping first the Classic environment and more recently Rosetta, in order to introduce barriers to running old software.

It's pretty frustrating as a user.

I still use my 4S as my daily driver. The SE I bought on eBay turned out to be Lost or Stolen so I got a refund. Tried to get an SE through Virgin as it would be an extra $15 per month for 2 years but I had just switched over to them for the other phone so I don't qualify yet.

An SE would suit my needs and I have a Moondog Labs anamorphic lens that fits a 5 & SE. I might as well just wait for the new SE in September?

Anyways I dig the phone and tablets because of the apps but have always and always will build my own desktops with overkill solid power supplies and CPU coolers.

>>
>>61081735

Well, I mean... Apple didn’t bend the phone, the user did. Maybe that was in part due to fragile construction, but, really, how far can you take that line of reasoning before you’re suing Apple because the body is made of glass and it shattered when you dropped it?

It’s an issue that you can kind of approach from both directions, and that’s why I’m personally okay-ish with the $150 REP. It’s meeting in the middle.

If the decision had been mine, I would’ve gone full Note 7 on the iPhone 6 as quietly as possible. Get them the fuck off of store shelves, make sure nobody gets them that doesn’t already have them, fix them, and *then* release them. I find it regrettable that Apple didn’t handle it that way.
>>
>>61084871
I see what you mean but cracked glass is obvious exterior damage that doesn't occur from slight flexing or bending. It needs to have an impact, and a fairly major one, to cause it to shatter.

Touch Disease can occur with no visible exterior damage to the phone which means Apple are just assuming you've done something to cause it.

Then there's the fact that they only covered the Plus version with the extended service, so all the non-Plus owners still got shafted.

How did he blew the board? He literally did nothing but use the machine like he was supposed to do it
4x dual CPU's were PowerMac's, liquid cooled G5's that were power hungry as fuck, with an AIO that leaked always and shorted everything since the liquid was conductive

The burn marks are coming from a firewire or USB port on the back of a G5...

The burn marks are literally on the external going in, instead of the opposite, meaning the spark had to come from whatever peripheral was plugged in... it probably didn't have a proper ground, nor did it get rated for the proper voltage.

He plugged in a harddrive, probably with a shitty chinese cable, and then blew the board... that was his fault.

Using a kill-a-watt to measure my single core G5, it never went over 150watts. Checking the thermals, it never got as hot as the SandyBridge in my t420. I'm sure the quad G5 was more power hungry, but I'll bet an i7 with 1080 ti is in the same ballpark.

No, it doesn't. It has a translation layer that convert syscalls into WinAPI calls.

Basically, it's a reverse WINE.

It is much better than Cygwin ever was. Or using Virtualbox/Vmware/Hyper-V.

I have the full dev stack on my PC running natively, in a safe environment. Comfy as FUCK.

>>61088160
> Basically, it's a reverse WINE.
If Wine would work. If Wine would ever be complete. If Wine would be usable at all, like ever.
But Wine was always a half-written piece of fucking shit. It was always "may run this, but may break a week later" kind of crap.
I mean sure when it was Ubuntu 6.04, everyone tried to use it because you know, the day of desktop Linux was on the corner.

It just never came.
And Wine never matured.
>>
>>61088198
Literally anything was better than Cygwin, why people ever used that over msys2 is beyond me. I think I only ever needed 2 programs that relied on cygwin specifically and those could have been ported to mingw.
Not knocking WSL, I just dislike cygwin.
>>

You seem to be confused as to what "full Linux stack" actually means.

Also, if you think Cygwin and Interix are the same thing, you're a moron.

Look I am not saying it should be feature complete up to DX12 and the latest Windows 10 stuff (even though not much changed since Vista).

But.
It should be able to run old shit, emulate/run old DirectX versions and whatnot.
These stuff were "almost done" like 10 years ago (fuck it's been that long?). What's the situation now? Some work worse, some may run better.
>>
>>61088245

You're basically just replying with something completely irrelevant. Even your "point" about Wine didn't actually respond to anything the other anon said.

>>

tl;dr: There should be milestones, progression.
But it seems like they blindly patch everything with dirty workarounds to get program X running. Of course this breaks everything else, but no one really cares anyhow.

It's somehow now accepted that it's just shit and people just try to avoid it like it's a plague.

What the fuck is a Design Engineer has to do with DirectX? Next time you will bring up activated almonds too?

>>61088296
B-b-but muh linux desktop!
Just saying that old APIs should have been implemented fully long time ago. Like you can't run an old Photoshop, old Office or whatever (some works on some versions of Wine, I know). It would be a great tool for government bodies for example. They could use an up-to-date Linux distro with Wine.
>>
>>61088308
>What the fuck is a Design Engineer has to do with DirectX?
The point is, you're clearly pretending. We all know the reason you bring up Dx12 is because of games. Just admit it, instead of pretending to be something you aren't.

>Just saying that old APIs should have been implemented fully long time ago.
If it was important enough, then someone would have thrown either money or development time (or both) on the problem. Seeing how no one has done that, it's fair to assume it isn't worth the trouble.

People who need Dx for work stuff just use Windows. People who care about Dx on Linux are hobbyists. Sure, it would be nice to have, but it's far more important to just have some basic Windows programs working tbqh.

I never brought up DX12. DirectX 12 itself is useless, even when it comes to games.

DirectX is a lot more than just a 3D API, and judging from your replies it's been around longer than you yourself.

>Linux are *for* hobbyists
Fixed it for you. Because people who want to work with 3D, who work on architecture, design, simulations, they are all just fucking scrubs who should stick to Windows, right?

So then again, who the fuck should use Linux then? """Hobbyists"""? Basically, weeb shitposters who post screenfetch images in threads?
Well, alright.

The older folks believed that Linux could become something major, gain a foothold on the desktop market.
Ubuntu was a good step in this direction. But the big change never happened.
Wine is part of the reason why.

>>
>>61088599
>>Linux are *for* hobbyists
I never said this. I use Linux for work, so stop arguing a fucking strawman.

But trying to run Windows programs on Linux is a task for hobbyists.

>Because people who want to work with 3D, who work on architecture, design, simulations, they are all just fucking scrubs who should stick to Windows, right?
They should stick to Windows if the software they require only work for Windows, yes. Wine is not a "Linux project", it's a bunch of unpaid developers that hack together something that works as best they can. Other FOSS projects have multibillion dollar companies that back them.

>So then again, who the fuck should use Linux then?
Whoever wants to do it, but certainly not people who will try to use it like it Windows and then come to /g/ and scream and have autistic tantrums about how shit Linux is because it isn't Windows.

Its nothing like food.
Its like taking the train vs driving a car.

When you drive a car, if you're a bad driver, you will crash. It is not the fault of the car, it is the fault of the person operating the car.
A good driver will thrive with a car, and have complete personal freedom. This is the PC.

Taking the the train is safe. You dont have to think all that much while doing it meaning its not very likely to crash. You have little to no freedom when taking the train. This is the Mac.
