Socialism and free software are fundamentally incompatible.
Any socialist state requires an authoritarian government, for which free software is a threat. (Just look at Venezuela or read a history book)

Capitalism is the only system, which is more then a fanatics day dream, in which free software (and freedom in general) can exist.

No it isn't. But free developers, leaded by the party, will stop to be anarchists and will start to gather and fight monopolies correctly.

I triple checked setting the root password in the installer and triple checked when entering the password. What the fuck? Apparently this is a bug Debian has been having and it is STILL not fixed. Have a made a mistake using Debian?

No, just boot into root directly.

If it happens this time round stop grub at the the menu (just mash up or down arrow keys) and edit the boot line (ctl+e IIRC) to have boot=/bin/bash at the end, then boot into the edited line (ctl+x, maybe). That should get you a shell and you can use passwd or edit sudo.conf or whatever.

Not fixing the problem but it will get you a working system.

Yes, you have to configure your httpd.conf to tell it where your files are, and what hostnames to use etc., and you can upload your PHP files or whatever and access them in your browser.
>What about Node.JS?
Node.js is independent from the http server. You can install it, and use it to run your JS files without any server.

if your resizing windows maybe you want a tiling wm? i3wm is really simple to get in to

In this case, nothing, but the quotes are important because if $1 contains spaces, then the ssh command will expand to
vi notes/name with spaces
and will fail, instead of
vi 'notes/name_with_spaces'
.
The braces are useful in cases like
"$variable""sometext"

is equivalent to
"${variable}sometext"
.

>What if i want to start vi in the notes dir?
That code will work, it'll just expand to
vi 'notes/'

Look into debootstrap. Start with minbase and then include all the packages you need. Note that minbase doesn't include init or a kernel so you should start with then ;)

Nah. You dont need to do that. Although sometimes there are lots of deps bought down. Like installing network stuff like iproute2 and nfs-common brings in dozens of MBs of crypto shit.

Including crypto shit you don't need and therefore probably don't want.

I'm saddened.
I have been trying to build package-query cross-compiling with makepkg since yesterday, to see if I can make packages on my PC rather than on my arm device, and everything has failed.
I'm out of ideas.
Is even cross compiling from x86_64 to aarch64 a thing?
I can't make ./config work either.
CC=aarch-64-linux-gnu-gcc CPP='aarch-64-linux-gnu-gcc -E' ./configure --host aarch64-linux-gnu --build x86_64-linux-gnu
throws me an error:
Checking for alpm_version in -lalpm... no
configure: error: pacman is needed to compile package-query

From what I get, it is asking me to install pacman for aarch64 on my x86_64 computer to build package-query. You can't cross-compile like that.

I know that gentoo can do it because i did it for my old raspberry. It has sys-devel/crossdev for cross compiling that i could install to compile almost any arch gcc supports. I found standard Canonical Ubuntu too restricted, you can't even disable mouse acceleration in the settings menus. Will I end up on a ruined babby Ubuntu if I go with Ubuntu GNOME?

If I install Ubuntu GNOME now will I just end up having to reinstall in a few months when Canonical ruin it?

you could also use ~/.local
desktop files are in ~/.local/share/applications.
same with /usr/local/share/applications
./configure --prefix=/usr/local; make; make install it's simpler that making an rpm.
coincidentally, most AUR packages are just that, main reason why the AUR has so many packages.

Your employer will probably be more interested which one of the "enterprise big three" you're familiar with, ie. rhel, sles and ubanto.
Putting GNU/Linux just narrows your specialisation to GNU/Linux. It's basically saying "I'm familiar with Linux distributions that use glibc and gnu coreutils, I'm not familiar with alpine and other specific-purpose distributions"

But if you wanna be specific I'd say Manjaro, or Solus because the developers actually claim to focus on the gaming experience on those distros (among other things). Ubuntu's focus is on everything so things should work there fine, and Ubuntu has a fuckton of packaged games (see playdeb).

A lot of half-truths and some outright lies.
The existence of RHEL invalidates 7 of the 8 points. The remaining one - hardware compatibility - has improved tremendously in recent years although there are still pretty bad spots (Broadcom networking chips, nVidia graphics, ...). Those are easy to bypass since there's always competition with better drivers.
>>
>>61074633
You still have to manually manipulate your $PATH to include the bin directory of local. ~/.local/share is something completely different from /usr/local, btw. No need to lump them together just because they share a word.

I have never seen an AUR package that uses /usr/local. That's just shitty design and cries for problems of users not knowing how to execute programs from it.
>>
>>61074711

The bin directory is the easy part. The hard part is the lib directory: You'll have to edit $LIBRARY, $LD_LIBRARY and some other environment variables if you want your installed libraries to work.
And if you use your own libraries to build other software, then you're gonna be in deep trouble if you ever remove them for some reason.

There was a way to enable that functionality with a few commands.
xinput set-prop "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint" "Evdev Wheel Emulation" 1
xinput set-prop "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint" "Evdev Wheel Emulation Button" 2
xinput set-prop "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint" "Evdev Wheel Emulation Timeout" 200

Try just entering those commands through the terminal (make sure xinput is installed) before you put them into xsessionrc so that if something goes wrong it will just revert back to normal when you reboot.

Gentoo makes it easier because it's whole package management was designed as a framework to make changes to the way software is compiled a single-line command.

Next time, use your brain before posting.
>>

Thanks anon.

>>61075813
Gentoo is pretty different from Mint. For starters, it's source based so you need to compile your own packages, which uses more CPU power and takes longer than normal installations of packages, however it gives you more freedom to customize programs before you actually compile and install them.
Another difference would be in the installation process. Most of the distros have an installer which installs the sistem for you. Gentoo however is a bit more complex and requires you to manually compile and configure everything, including the kernel itself, so it takes much longer and is a more involved process than regular installers. However this means that you can set your system up however you want, making it as minimal as it can be, thus providing much more customization options.
But when it comes to desktop environments, the choice of programs, and just regular daily use, there's not much difference (once you fully install and configure Gentoo). In the end both can run the same stuff. Gentoo just gives you more freedom during installation.

Should I install Kali Linux on my main system ? Is it functional for regular use and stable ?

Gentoo is the ultimate freedom distribution. It's so free, it's even too free for RMS and his goons. Comparing it with crap like mint is a bit funny though. So yeah, absolutely more customisation than mint. Aside from the fact that pretty much any properly maintained distribution is more secure than Mint, distros like Gentoo or Arch let you go full paranoid pretty easily. But you have to make it secure yourself. This is good, because you can't achieve real protection from a complex system you don't even understand.

I'm struggling to write a bash ffmpeg screen recording tool.
Full screen capture is easy, but how the fuck would I go about parsing -video_size and -i 0.0:[value,value] or whatever, as if I'm dragging a rectangle?
Finding a tool that will grab that data from interacting with X using a scrot -s style thing...

It's all just boggling me at the moment. Does anyone have any advice on where to go? I can't even phrase my question properly, as you can probably tell, so Google won't help

Do you have to keep it in bash?

Well, for myself, I'd like to keep it in bash. Bash is my most favorite tool for chaining other tools together, obviously.

I was having thoughts of, "maybe I should make it solely GNU-tools compatible?" but then again FFMPEG is not in that, I don't reckon.

It's for myself, but I'd love to be able to figure this out with bash exclusivity.
