You don't need to do anything if you're not going to do anything with it. If you plan on playing games, you might as well just get a 1400X as it will be on par with modern i3s and low range i5s in most games. For older titles using DX9 or ye olde OpenGL there's no reason to upgrade. Just about any 1700 can hit 3.8GHz, many of them on the stock cooler. 3.9 is achievable for most of them as well, and many but not all can hit 4GHz with an aftermarket cooler. 4.1GHz is rare for a 1700.

Meanwhile the 1800X comes at 3.6 with turbo to 4 out of the box and can usually hit 4.1-4.2 pretty easily. But anyone who pays $150+ for .1-.2GHz is crazy.
