Why exactly do people sing praises about this?

It's a centralized "server" which retains everything you ever say.
>>
there is 0 evidence of that being true
>>
>tfw all the cool kids left IRC and all your favorite channels are dead now
>>
>>61059668
I don't know, I'd rather use IRC

The interface is bloated as fuck

>>61059713
>free proprietary service
What, you think they're just doing it out of the kindness of their heart? Top kek, every conversation you had has been sold to advertisers
>>
>>61059721
>implying cool kids would ever leave IRC
>>
>>61059738
But there aren't any ads on Discord. They make money selling $5 sticker packs.
Also,
>implying anyone gives a shit about what you say unless you try to do some anti-government conspiracy shit
Nothing to hide, nothing to fear.
>b-but muh privacy!!
Stop looking at kiddie porn, then. Easy fix.
>>
>>61059668
No one gives a fuck about how much you love ponies dude. Everyone logged IRC. If the government cared every chat room would be logged because they could just idle a client in there.

Just don't organize suicide bombings and you're good.
>>
>>61059668
Funny thing is, you can get perm. banned from Discord.

At least if you're perm. banned from an IRC network, you can connect to another one.
>>
I swear every op that starts this thread is an autist, everyone fucking uses it, and it works. That's it, no one has made any other claims.

Because people are dumb

It's retard proof, that's why. Make a FOSS version and I will shill the shit out of it. Mumble is already good enough, it's just that people like their images and avatars. Also, I think Discord is also getting videochat or screenshare, so it's trying to eat Skype's remains as well.

I do believe BOTNET has been put forward.
BOTNET is true until proved false.

same with any mumble or teamspeak server you connect to.

Big, child-friendly icons and a GUI. People are too stupid to type out /join apparently.

You don't think any teamspeak or mumble server you connect to doesn't collect the same? Even a private server hosting the mumble client collects and intercepts that data

One click solution, send link/invite to friend, they click, they are in.

No need for them to type out some post-ironic nerd website name and ports and hope the server does not crash from having too many users on it because it's being run off a dusty 200mhz pentium with a dial up connection.
>>
>>61060201
>Even a private server hosting the mumble client collects and intercepts that data
Bullshit. Show me any reported instances of a self hosted teamspeak server selling your data to the cloud.
>>
>>61060183
Also Riot's performance is even more abysmal than Discord. Where's a proper standalone desktop client (not a disguised browser)?
>>
>>61060204
>implying it's hard to link people to webchat
>>
>>61060201
That's fallacious. Discord isn't exempted from criticism or distrust because some other service sells the data too.

>Bullshit. Show me any reported instances of a self hosted teamspeak server selling your data to the cloud.
How do you know your data ISNT being collected on that platform? How do you know the server some guy rents from a company to host his mumble client isn't inadvertently collecting the data.

You magically think you're more secure because you're connecting to a private server that some guy rented from another company? You really don't think those packets aren't being collected? Even if they're not being sold it can still be recorded and collected
>>
>>61060201
"I-It's okay when Discord does it!"
>>
>>61060227
No I'm just saying it seems theres a lot of hate for discord on accords that already exist on other platforms that NO ONE questioned either.
>>
>>61060201
Mumble is open software. I host my own, so no.
I have nothing against discord. Been using it more and more to chat, but try not to spout retarded shit. Do some goddamn research.
>>
>>61060247
I didn't say that you stupid fuck. I said that you rip on discord for erroneous philosophies of privacy protection but I can't say I've EVER heard someone say the same about TS3 or Mumble
>>
>>61060262
>I host my own, so no.
Ok, YOU host your own with your own server but what about all those people who host a server by renting it from another company? Even though mumble is open source, what exactly is stopping or not allowing someone from collecting that data in the same accord?
>>
>>61060034
>it's literally in their ToS
Could you proof this, Where in their ToS can I find this?
>>
>>61060240
>How do you know the server some guy rents from a company to host his mumble client isn't inadvertently collecting the data.
I said self hosted. It's not my fault others are too stupid to provide and secure their own infrastructure.

>You magically think you're more secure because you're connecting to a private server that some guy rented from another company?
No because I'm not a moron. But the server host stealing your data is very different than the communication platform stealing your data.
>>
>>61059668
Perhaps because it has a nice interface, lots of features, is on multiple clients, and is free. Coming from Hangouts, the privacy of my conversations doesn't concern me that much. I was already having my conver mined by the GOOGLE botnet.
>>
The same reason normies have no problem with stuff like google. They don't care about any of this.
>>
>>61060278
>I said self hosted. It's not my fault others are too stupid to provide and secure their own infrastructure.
Thats not what I said nor what I implied. I said how do you know your data isn't being recorded on other servers that aren't self hosted? You can't just oust and forget about that factor because you only wanna talk about self hosted shit. Even if someone self hosted their TS3 server, how do you know they aren't collecting and logging that information?
>>
where else should I have my larpfaptrap sessions?
Open to suggestions.
>>
>>61060249
Decentralized services can survive from donations. Discord can't because it's centralized. With all the investor money flooding in, there must be some source of revenue, the smiliepacks surely aren't sell anything great to keep the people working and servers running and investors getting their money back.
>>
>>61060318
Ok regardless of profit and revenue streams how do you know that some free user isn't collecting that information for sale or even a malicious purpose?
>>
>>61060275
Not what you said though
>>61060201
>You don't think any teamspeak or mumble server you connect to doesn't collect the same? Even a private server hosting the mumble client collects and intercepts that data
Nice try either way.
>>
>>61060339
>Nice try either way.
that doesn't answer my question
>>
>>61060154
It's part of a protocol. It won't die.

It's like saying FTP would die.
>>
>>61059668
>Why exactly do people sing praises about this?
nobody does this you fag they just use the software
>>
>>61060336
A simple user doesn't have big business contacts or a big enough volume of data to offer anyone.
>>
>>61060296
>Show me any reported instances of a self hosted teamspeak server selling your data to the cloud.
>self hosted

>How do you know the server some guy rents from a company
>Thats not what I said nor what I implied

Because the scope of my discussion is about privacy concerns with discord selling user data, not your ISP intercepting your communications or the whatever server provider discord uses doing the same.

>I said how do you know your data isn't being recorded on other servers that aren't self hosted?

Because I host the server my circle of friends connects to and uses to chat, your argument is no different than the anon saying you can log IRC by keeping a client in a channel.

There is a difference between someone running a server for his friends or his clan, who has logging turned on, and a massive company who has investors wanting to buy the information that is collected.

Now this is just getting embarrassing... Again, I'm not against Discord. Just think before you type. That is all. Have a pleasant day.
>>
>>61060384
>that can't happen
>no one that small would do something malicious
>>
>>61060393
Yeah, that definitely sounds like they take everything. Don't know what that other Anon is talking about.
>>
Ya'll missing the point here:
>what if some random guy sells your info

The point here is YOU KNOW THAT RANDOM GUY

YOU CAN ASK THE QUESTION:

GEE, IS BERT GOING TO BLACKMAIL ME ABOUT THAT RACIST JOKE I MADE DURING THE RAID LAST WEEK?

MAYBE I SHOULD NOT SAY STUFF LIKE THAT THERE, I KNOW JIM DOES NOT GIVE A FUCK WHAT I SAY WHEN I AM ON HIS SERVER

It is far easier to make decisions regarding the self policing of your content when you know the entity who is retaining it.
>>
>>61060414
>Now this is just getting embarrassing... Again, I'm not against Discord. Just think before you type. That is all. Have a pleasant day.
What guarantees you that there are no private users doing malicious things on their self hosted servers?
>>
>>61060477
>The point here is YOU KNOW THAT RANDOM GUY
No you fucking don't. Even if you did how would you know they aren't being malicious?
>>
>>61060517

My argument isn't about the intention but about the limits of not having access to a lot of data to sell to someone.

MAYBE I SHOULDNT PUT MY PRIVATE INFORMATION ON DISCORD. I KNOW Discord DOESNT GIVE A FUCK

for the text and images, they can retain that indefinitely, but for VOIP they say it's transient and for delivery.
>>
>>61060527
Exactly you don't fucking know, so stop pretending that TS3 and Mumble are the saviors of VOIP services and blame discord for all these privacy violations you obviously don't give a fuck about
>>
Its basically IRC for retards and with avatars and memes.

didn't know you can talk and share images over IRC

But I'm not a friendless virgin anon, I do know the people I connect to.

>TS3 and Mumble are the saviors of VOIP services
Not once have I claimed that, hopefully summer ends soon so you can work on that illiteracy problem.

The bot used by Discord come from Google,
try to send an iplogger in Discord for see this.
>>
>>61060664
>But I'm not a friendless virgin anon, I do know the people I connect to.
How do you actually know though. Are they personal friends or are they just randos you met online and the anonymity acquired from the fact of a simple dinky ass user name obscures that?

>inb4 yea I only play with personal friends, fuck those millions of other users connecting

Therefore, by reductio ad absurdum your argument is invalid.

There, can't make it any simpler than that. Also, your technical terms are on a par with your knowledge of IT Security. Thanks for making it blatantly obvious.

Passwords and whitelists are a thing, also you don't have to list your server.
It's seems like you never even hosted a server.
>>
>>61060705
Mumble has certificates. Yes, everything is controlled by the server owner, so YMMV. Discord's account integration is offputting as well.

Otherwise, Mumble is safest when you join self-hosted servers from trusted individuals, and the latency is much better. Self-hosting is pretty much painless for both Linux and Windows. Ironically the overlay for mumble works more reliably for me as well. I'd love to use it day-to-day but it's really unpolished and lacks a Web UI; in general it just isn't built for the mainstream - most people migrated to discord so I use it as well.

Someone who actually wants to make a point wouldn't quote the nazis over and over again. Everyone's always talking about tech illiterates flooding /g/ but I'm getting more and more convinced it's just 5 or 6 fulltime trolls

Because most people aren't autistic and don't care.

In every video game I play (mostly MMOs), everyone uses it. Its simple and easy out of game communication. Obviously people are going to love it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If you're not /v/ don't use it.
