what's the difference between playing a 4k youtube video with h264 vs vp9? And what about h265? I thought that was supposed to be for 4k?
H265 is dead for web use. Forget about it.
VP9 will have higher decoding requirements than h264

Licensing costs to multiple parties each with their own conditions make it less attractive to adopt if the company isn't in the patent pool.
Alliance for open media was formed to try and combat that by developing open multimedia standards that aren't bogged down by the broadcast giants, at least for themselves. The current major development is AV1 video encoding standard that takes place of VP10. This year will see more developments. This is what you will see used on the web.

AV1 adoption should be pretty fast. The companies working on it cover the whole computer business.
