>want to start up a site
>have no money to do so (domains, servers)
>free alternatives available are mostly shit
how can someone, like me, get a (good) start?
It's pretty cheap actually, there's domains as cheap as 80 cents, and you can get a low-end VPS for 5$/month.
Anyway if you want a blog, just use blogger. It's the most costumizable.

Just use Openshift

if you have a credit card buy a .edu account which is like 3$, you can get a domain for free and 50$ on digitalocean
Just use github pages if you want a blog or similar

AWS has a free tier you can use for a year. A t2.micro w/ 30GB is more than enough to run your low volume site until you either are making enough to pay for itself, or you give up and move on.

try heroku, they offer free cloud hosting I think
