Because no one but apple is willing to stand up to carriers regarding updates and bloatware. Google was only able to do it with the Pixel because of exclusivity and I beleive they're giving Verizon a portion of Android Pay profits.

It's been 7 months since Android 7.1 and the fucking Galaxy S8 still doesn't have it. Next upgrade's gonna be a Pixel or iPhone.

They have dialed back significantly on the boat of TouchWiz. Also has a pretty awesome CPU, better optimization, etc. If you were running a custom Rom you didn't have to deal with TouchWiz. Consider yourself lucky.

So when I say speed, I'm mostly talking about how quickly apps load, how many tabs I can have running, how many apps I can keep open before I noticed things chugging along.

How to make a good phone:
1. Use parts which have open source drivers, so you don't waste time with that.
2. Get a unique feature, eg use a T9 keyboard and you get a ton of free press coverage which should boost sales. (if you are literally copying the iphone nobody will care and nobody will buy)
3.a Steal features from other roms, eg, copy lineage OS or whatever, change the logos etc, be as lazy as possible.
3.b If you feel the need to make at least one app, make one so you can reboot and install google services.
This way, you can hit "I don't accept" on the first boot popup thing without breaking the phone.
4. hire an intern to pull the changes, compile it and check if it works on the phone, then push it out if there isn't any problems once a month.

It all seems really simple. Why are nobody doing it?

Nokia was never any good.
Internet features makes a lot of sense on a communications device.
The constant shaming people into being abused by proprietary cloud services is a bad thing though.
It should be possible to buy a phone and not automatically use google or apple services.
Android without google is pretty good.
