If you were honest...

Are you really satisfied with your internet speeds? Can you accomplish all you want without any noticeable lag?

Because my websites can't push back to my Gig line, I really cant tell the difference between 100 mbps and 1000 mbps..

Honestly, are your speeds that bad?

A single light user wont notice between 100 and 1000.

Even a moderate user likely wouldnt notice outside of the occasional game download.

Heavy user would notice, multiple moderate users would notice, multiple heavy users would certainly notice.

I am happy with my speeds, coming from 300/300mbps a few months ago, this is a nice upgrade that should suffice for at least 3-5 years.
>>
>>61027599

What is your definition of "moderate" and "heavy" ?

>>

Hahahahahaha.

Suicide is the only option at this point senpai.

Tell ma and pa to level you up. This shit ain't right. Child abuse.
>>
>>61027612
I would define a moderate user as someone who regularly streams 1080p content, and occasionally downloads movies, games, or other things in excess of 10GB once or twice a month.

A heavy user would be someone who does this to an extreme, constant video streaming, occasionally multiple 1080p or 4k streams at once. A heavy user might also download 50GB+ weekly and upload a similar amount due to torrents, or other services (cloud storage, work VPN backups, etc)
>>
>>61027660

I have 3 people in my home. We are cord cutters. Everything we watch is streamed, we use the internet and do many downloads. I torrent a few 1080p movies a week.

I am confident I would not be able to tell the difference, and if you did the math 100 Mbps would suffice fine.

But the price difference between 1gb and 100 mb is only 25 dollars, so I went with the gig. No brainer.

I use cloud backup as well and do daily incremental and weekly full. the 100 Mbps upload seems to do fine, I never notice any issues. Though I do wish its symettrical. But I live in the sticks, so having gig down is a miracle and I know jesus exists.
>>
>>61027733
I assume the other 2 in your house aren't particularly heavy hitters on data.

Just me alone I use around 1100-1400GB per month. I live with my brother and his girlfriend. They together use about 800-1000GB.

Trust me, we would notice.

Hell we noticed moving from 150/150 to 300/300, and again from 300/300 now to 940/940
>>
>>61027794
And for anyone wondering, total household storage is right around 57.5TB with about 15TB empty and waiting.

We have an extensive media library.
>>
>>61027615
Same here man, gonna an hero
>>
>>61027794
>>61027733
The difference could be peering.

1gbps would be wasted on many sites if your peering to them is garbage, whereas if you have 1gbps from a larger ISP with more favorable peering agreements, than your 1gbps becomes a lot more usable across a larger number of services.
>>
>>61027924

My ISP peers through another ISP who uses spirit telecom as their backbone.

I cannot figure out why they peer though, when my ISP could go straight into Spirit themselves, except to split expense.
>>
>>61027733
>We are cord cutters.
wow i googled that, didn't know there was a specific word for that, i assumed it would be covered by "being younger than 30"
>>
>>61027985

All of us are over 30, except my girlfriend.

Cable is losing customers by the thousands each month. Has nothing to do with age and everything to do with price.
>>
>>61027958
Yeah, that's an odd arrangement.

Mine is through verizon and they have peering directly into both of L3's east coast hub's (NYC and Northern Virginia) So peering is pretty much as good as it gets.
Not to mention Verizon bought XO communications not too long ago which has a decent amount of fiber backbone running across the country.

Yes.
>>
>>61028023

Well, we are in the middle of the sticks. The fact we have "gig" at all is amazing. Their peering however is atrocious as shit is routed trough level3 in Atlanta even if its going the opposite way.
>>
>>61028066
Yeah our biggest advantage is the fact amazon hosts AWS in Northern Virginia, Cali, Ohio, and Oregon.

Since I'm in Washington DC, Verizon has fantastic peering to all amazon shit, and since most people these days offload their shit to AWS, it means most websites have great speeds for me.
>>
>>61028131

I had FiOS back in the day when 25 Mbps fluffed to 30 was high speed bees knees.
>>
>>61028170
Yeah, I started off with them in late 2005 with 15mbps.

Well you're obviously not the norm.

BUT, you guys really fucked up when you decided not to go with FTTP and instead opted to go with FTTN.
>>
>>61028300
My ISP started charging me more because I'm still on copper as opposed to swapping to fiber, despite the fact that I can't get it here yet.
It's funny because my parents that live down in the middle of fucking nowhere have better internet than me.
>>
>>61028356

Sue them mang! Call the police.
>>
>>61027543
Honestly, I'm very satisfied with both my fiber home connection (100/100) and my LTE phone (40/10). Especially since they cost 10€/month (20€ for both) and are both truly unlimited.
>>
>>61027543
I usually use around 100GB a month out of the 500 I have available. For that amount of data 40/40 is plenty.
>>
>>61028878
>100GB a month out of the 500
...what do you do?
>>
>>61027543
I'm satisfied but I'm butthurt that I'm knowingly being cucked because I live in burgerland
>>
I was completely fine on 12Mbps DSL but my cable internet is 85Mbps now so no complaints

This can't be right. I'm on the 2nd lowest AT&T bundle, unless someone fucked up and gave me a business line and said fuck it.
>>
>>61029425
Yeah I don't even think that is technically possible right now
>>
>>61027543
I pay $39.99 per month for 80Mbps down and about 20Mbps up, my up seems to vary a lot but it always above 15. I always have good ping times.

I don't think at this point in time a faster connection would make much practical difference. However if I could get gigabit FIOS from verizon for what they advertise ($70/mo) I would probably do it just to see.

the only thing I have to wait on to load is porn and that is no doubt because I only go to free porn sites, I am sure if i paid i would not get lag
>>
>>61029425
>>61029456
it's not.

This (pic related) is pretty much the maximum throughput a 1gbps NIC can sustain. Anything over ~950mbps is an error, fake, or running on a retarded expensive server setup.
>>
I have a cable modem but I only use it to browse 4chan, send emails and use Tor.

Tor is slow as shit, takes me forever to get images and video of high quality. I have no idea how to up my speeds there, but that all the media I consume.
>>
I get about 300down and 20up, wish the up was faster but I really don't upload a ton of stuff. If they offered 50 up and 5 down for 1/4 the cost I'd jump on it and be happy as fuck

what does wifi have to do with it?

Almost no device currently supports 1gbps over wifi anyway, so it's irrelevant.

However, if you're a normal human and using ethernet, yes, plenty of drives can handle writing at 1gbps

>>

I thought SATA SSDs were maxed at like 600Mbps and most laptops don't have Ethernet anymore anyway
>>
>>61029784
But that's my fucking point you ignorant cunt.

No one would have 1gbps and be using Wifi at all.

Hell if you have fiber internet, even if it's only 200mbps, you're a fucking moron if you primarily use fucking wifi.

Why the FUCK would you ever limit yourself to some half duplex bullshit meme with higher latency unless the device you're using is primarily a portable device?

And if it IS primarily a portable device, you don't fucking need 1gbps speeds.
>>
>>61029802
600MB/s anon, not mbps.

Even my mechanical hard drive can write at 1gbps speeds.

1gbps is 125MB/s. My 5TB 7200RPM hard drive can write at 175-200MB/s, a good margin beyond 1gbps.
>>
>>61029811
>No one would have 1gbps and be using Wifi at all.

yes they would

it's called laptop users and non gamers

like 90% of everyone uses wifi all the time
>>
>>61029839
And none of those people would ever notice using 1gbps over 100mbps, so it's irrelevant.
>>
>>61029839
also, just to shut you the fuck up.

Here is a screen shot of a Macbook pro (2015) hitting gigabit speeds over wifi with a Ubiquiti AC HD access point.

I grew up with a 64k modem, just something like being able to stream movies in a good resolution is a nice thing and you can do that with 10m.
Back then, I used torrents all the time and I was obsessed with getting a better and better connection.
I haven't pirated anything in the past 5 years where I have used a 100m connection.
>>
>>61029065
Normal stuff. I just don't download a ton.
>>
>>61027543
Yeah my speeds are bad. Can't even watch 720p fucking videos. Less than 4 down less than .5 up fuck where I live. Shits 170 a month too but it's the "only provider"
>>
>>61027543
220 down
20 up

I'd like a higher upload but I'm perfectly content with my download.

This is just me for a month.
>>
>>61029811
wifi can be good too but you need some really expensive router for it. the 300mbps cheap routers with 100mbps ethernet ports are just scams.
>>
>>61033129
Even expensive routers wont give more than 300-500mbps to most devices, simply because the client device radios are 2x2.
Only high end laptops or desktops will have 3x3 or 4x4 radios for actual gigabit speeds over wifi.

If you DO have both a $300+ access point, AND a device with a 3x3 or 4x4 radio, such as a macbook pro or similar high end device, then if you're in the same room without anything bulky or electronic in the way, you should be able to get gigabit speeds, or even a bit more.
>>
>>61027543
Yes, I pay for 50/5 and it fucking sucks. I used to have FIOS which was 100/100 which was basically perfect for me.
