Microsoft makes almost all of their money from Windows and Office monopoly. That Office part is the major reason why they're still hanging on.

This is because Microsoft successfully transitioned to the cloud in thee layers: SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS:
SaaS: Office 365, Skype, etc.
PaaS: Basically their .NET platform is now on the cloud and nobody else can claim .NET, similar to Amazon's Elastic Beanstalk, instead you're writing apps on the .NET platform which many enterprises still use today.
IaaS: With their Azure cloud compute. Essentially, Microsoft was able to take the Windows kernel and made it adaptable from embedded/mobile all the way up to the cloud in its massive data centers.
Microsoft Azure platform is nothing to laugh at. It is in serious second place to Amazon AWS. Even Google's own cloud platform lags far behind in third place. In addition, Walmart is now forcing its vendors to pick Microsoft Azure for its cloud computing platform in a bid against Amazon and its AWS platform.
