So what's the best Linux distro to install on this? I'm thinking Xubuntu, but what do you think?

puppylinux
tinycore
Arch with xfce
source based: gentoo
bin based: slack
everything else is shit
>>61021003
Why?
mint mate
deepin, peppermint, korora, all other shit is trash
>>61021597
But why? I mean, this is fairly old hardware, will something like Deepin really work on it?
>>61020233
gentoo, obviously

Fedora and Debian are also good... but other than those two I fully agree with the other anon. It's because all other distros are pretty much shitty forks on top of shitty forks. And they're developed/maintained by hobbyists who lack the manpower, experience, and consistency to produce a project comparable in quality to the likes of Redhat developers and the RHEL project, for example.

Give lubuntu a try. It uses openbox already and it's pretty easy to put a panel on it and you're done. Tinycore is the fastest I've seen on older laptops but also the wierdest to use.
I run lubuntu on a 1 1/2 year old machine as well as old laptops.
