the mistake I made was assuming Linux could work as well as Windows
The funny part is it straight up lies, I downloaded an audio manager because the default one is absolute shit, and it told me my HDMI audio source was unplugged. This may not seem funny yet, but the funny part is that the HDMI audio output is my actual monitor, and if it was unplugged I wouldn't be able to see anything
Was this OS made by gibbons?

HURR DURR I WAS PRETENDING TO BE RETARDED
>>
>>61016962
Seriously, if i put on a balance the pros and cons of windows and Linux, Linux always wins. Windows has in general given me a lot more of trouble than what it benefits me, and that's just the purely technical aspects, if you have compatible hardware Linux is practically maintenance-free, even installing the few proprietary drivers i need can be done from a GUI directly in the OS and i can keep them updated always from an official source.

Aside from the purely technical aspect i consider a serious disadvantage knowing that if i depend on a Windows-only program is like being married with windows because i don't have the option to abandon it but at the same time i must like whatever Microsoft wants to do with me. Seems a pretty asymmetrical deal to me and more considering Microsoft has a very bad record on being unethical.

Honestly i only use Windows when there's absolutely no option due to a lock-in situation or because i'm asked at work to use a Microsoft-only technology (this is less common each day fortunately) but otherwise i avoid it. No OS is perfect of course and i can't talk about OSX but i'm 1000 times more willing to forgive an honest mistake, for example a bug or the lack of a feature dues to lack of human resources, than something pushed on me on purpose.

It's pretty fucked up in fact, you can find a lot of funny quotes, they even call their strategy a "Jihad". No doubt why Microsoft acts like a fucking mob:

[1] https://www.microsoft.com/northafrica/careers/positions/de.htm

[2]http://antitrust.slated.org/www.iowaconsumercase.org/011607/3000/PX03096.pdf (page 4,9)

[3]http://antitrust.slated.org/www.iowaconsumercase.org/011607/3000/PX03096.pdf (page 5, 30, 35)

Sorry if it's hard to believe you (if i'm replying to OP) actually has a problem but part of the blame is MS's record on using dirty tactics. However if you're actually looking for help being passive-agressive will not help, go to one of the thread dedicated to this.

Good but to be fair your attitude is not helping your case, i doubt someone will take you seriously now in this thread. The most sane thing is to stop being a turd and ask nicely (mind that /g/ may not be the best place for this), go to /sqt/ or the /fglt/ and provide your specs, that way someone may help you. Otherwise if you're being sincere what you're doing in this thread is shooting yourself in the foot. If you want for microsoft to stop their bullshit they need more competition and thrash talking linux is not exactly the most intelligent thing to do in this case.
>>

>feel free to diagnose the issue and show me how much smarter you are, i really wanted to use mint but i'd rather have audio
No, not in this thread and not with this attitude. go to /stq/ or /fglt/, follow the rules and use your common sense if you want real help. Being passive-agressive will earn you for someone else to do a google search and that's it. If you want meaningful help this is not the way.

Also mind that if the company that created that piece of hardware decided to not support linux is not fault of the platform itself. If this is the case for better or wosr you're locked into using windows until said company changes it's mind. The community already does a lot by trying to reverse engineer unsupported hardware. With luck your problem will be just a simple fixable bug or something like that.

that depends solely on window compositor used
xfce (xubuntu) or other lightweight distros are inherently shit in that matter
I never had any tearing problems on Ubuntu or KDE-based distros, unless you're talking about REALLY modern GPUs, like a couple of weeks old.
>>
>>61014211
You sure you set the correct audio source in the sound settings?

It defaults to analog by default and you might use HDMI output
>>
>>61024606
I did solve it on GTX980 with Xubuntu OS prior by enabling full composition pipeline in the nvidia settings GUI. Should help mitigate tearing for other distributions as well.

>>61024903
xfce screen tearing is nightmare level, I spent most of the day trying to configure compton on an arch install with little to no effect on an intel HD4600 iGPU. The solution was simple, disable compton and use intel "TearFree" "true" option in xconf.
But my main GPU was tied to vfio-pci for passthrough and for some reason even after unmounting it and even mounting the nvidia driver.
Couldn't for the life of me autogenerate an xconf file because it segfaulted on every attempt to probe the card so I had to get in there and learn how to make my own basic xconf template, fun hair pulling times. Don't notice any screen tearing whatsoever now.

uninstalling = removing files
i formatted the HDD, which removed the files
>>
>>61026174
Disk formatting is the process of preparing a data storage device such as a hard disk drive, solid-state drive, floppy disk or USB flash drive for initial use.
Uninstalling means remove (an application or file) from a computer.
>>
>>61014211

>they aren't the same thing
Right. Formatting and unsinstalling aren't the same, if they wrere they would be interchangeable

>>61026262
>where are the files if they weren't removed?
The file bits were over-written to default values
>>
>>61026043
>Formatting disk is wiping out or overwriting the data
Kinda a pajeet's definition there anon.

Formatting a disk is more like writing/rewriting partition tables and clearing the file tables

foramtting a disk is NOT wiping out/overwriting the data on the disk. you can format a disk without actually wiping out the data. its still on the disk, just not indexed properly anymore.

>Uninstall is removing a particular software from hard drive
once again a pajeet definition. Uninstalling generally does not remove anything from the hard drive, it only removes stored references to the program's executables from the registry or file table. The software is still there until overwritten
>>
>>61026286
>>61026296
they are not interchangeable. formatting is a method of uninstalling, but uninstalling is a broader term
the files were removed and thus uninstalled
the format uninstalled the files
>>
>>61026296
>Formatting a disk is more like writing/rewriting partition tables and clearing the file tables
No, formating is not the same as partitioning.

And what is a """file table"""? Are you pulling shit out of your pajeet ass?
>>
>>61026223
format does not remove files from the disk!!!!
>FORMATTING DOES NOT REMOVE FILES FROM THE DISK

All formatting does is rewrite the partition and filing tables. the data goes nowhere until it is otherwise overwriten, only its references in a filing table are deleted

NTFS Physical Structure

The following information describes how clusters and sectors are organized on an NTFS volume, how the boot sector on the volume determines the file system, and how the FUCKING MASTER FILE TABLE (MFT) organizes structures on the volume.

Sequence of Clusters on an NTFS Volume

Clusters on an NTFS volume are numbered sequentially from the beginning of the partition into logical cluster numbers. NTFS stores all objects in the file system using a record called the Master File Table (MFT), similar in structure to a database.
