The purpose of a laptop is to combine BOTH power and portability. As long as you can fit the thing in a backpack or a messenger bag, and it doesn't look particularly unsightly, you can reasonably have a little extra space to put a better GPU or a fan so the thing doesn't turn into a fucking hotplate. I'd say as a general rule, a laptop does not need to be thinner than your thumb. At that point, you start to lose functionality, but don't gain significant improvements in portability. It's not as if you couldn't carry it when it was as thick as your thumb, but suddenly can carry it when it's not that thick. Nor is it as if it can now fit into your bag where it could not before, since no one uses a fucking manilla envelope to carry their stuff in.

I watched this guy's video before. For the sake of the video, there's a small, but large flaw. Premier Pro works better on non-Macs, Its also shit on AMD GPUs so the Mac actually has to work harder than the others. You don't buy a Mac to work solely on Premier Pro.

The very same export test for the same file done in Final Cut would have beaten all the others, but he'll never make a video demonstrating that because he doesn't even know this. This guy is clearly a tech illiterate.

First, Apple uses AMD GPUs. Second, Gaydobe is more optimized for CUDA (nVIdia) so macOS is stuck on OpenCL.

In my experience all modern laptops are bottle-necked by the cooling system.

A barebone with decent cooling is generally much faster than a laptop with the same CPU.

Fairly sure the exhaust is the bottleneck.
Laptops use heat pipes, the heat sink is right next to the exhaust not on top of the chips.

People think exhausts are ugly, so Apple makes them as small as possible.
You buy a Macbook for looks, not performance.
And people buying them don't do productive work anyways so it doesn't matter to them.

I think even 15cm would be doable.

I carried two Thinkpads today and I could easily fit 2 more.

What matters for portability are:
- width
- length
- weight
In that order.
