Kinda poor anon here...

I found this dell precision T5400 in the trash the other day and finally cleaned it up. It was full of fucking spiders, dirt, and various other shit from where the previous owner left it in his garage for years.

Should I invest and make it awesome (if possible) or should I continue to save up for another machine. I have about $300 to burn and would rather work with what I have if possible, what can be done for an old workstation like this? It has an 875w power supply, so I don't think that is worth changing. Only games I would play would be really overwatch and some dark souls. I would also use this for video editing.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Its definitely a clusterfuck inside.

that cpu isn't strong enough to do much with so i wouldn't even bother unless you feel like buying another xeon and throwing it in there

it'd still bottleneck and you'd probably be able to use a gtx 1060 at MOST and even then that's a stretch
>>
You can wrangle an X5640 for pretty cheap. That'd be a solid gigahertz and some change faster than the E5405.

Beyond that, I don't know much about the 771 socket.
>>
>>60998799
There are 2 sockets on this motherboard. would it be worth getting 2 of those?
>>
>>60998993
It's not going to make it slower or anything. For video editing, probably.
>>
>>60998799
x500/x600 series Xeons are LGA1366 shit, LGA771 is firmly in the Core 2 realm.
>>
>>60999017
What are u trying to say here anon
>>
>>60999017
Disclaimer: I fat fingered the number before. I meant to say the X5460, not 5640.

But yeah, the X5460 is a 771 processor. Ark that shit.
>>
>taking trash out of the trash
>>
x5460's are 19.50 each on ebay right now
x5450's are 12.00

3.16GHz vs 3.0. i.e. 5% gain.

I'd say get one unless you have two heat sinks. The heat sinks are outrageous IIRC. (though I only priced T5600s.) You'd need more RAM for two, too, since they each need their own.

$12 for an x5450 system ain't bad.
>>
>>61000154
I dont mind dropping the money on it, Ill get a heatsink too. As long as it can pull its weight,
>>
>>60998224
For video editing upgrade the CPU to two x5460s, add another 4-12gb of RAM, and see what you can do about upgrading the GPU.

The positives:

You could get 2x x5460's or something, they're pretty cheap and quite powerfull, probably enough for some years of gaming still along with a gtx1060 or 1070, and will satisfy the rest of your uses quite good.

The negatives:

The cpu's draws quite alot of power for their performance, will produce much heat and expensive power bill in the long run.

The caps and other components on the motherboard and in the psu will probably wear out pretty soon as they have limited life in good conditions, stored in shitty conditions and heavy use doesn't help either. Not likely it can handle anywhere near 875w now, and ofthen you have to get that exact psu model for replacement due to them jewing the connectors differantly.

4gb ram isn't enough today for most users, and definitely won't hold you long in the future. DDR2 FB-dimms are both expensive and runs VERY hot.

I whould try to sell it, anon.
Get a cheap ryzen system instead, it'll hold you waaay longer, draw a fraction of the power and probably not cost that much more than all the upgrades it whould take to get the Dell usable.
>>
put a x5460 there, 8-12gb of RAM and a 1050TI (low profile, low comsumption and should fit in your case) and you're good to go for those games.
If you want to expend even less, consider a 1050 or even a GT1030.
>>
>>61001184
>If you want to spend* even less
Fix'd.
English is not my primary language and I had a brainfart there.
>>
>>60998224
I recommend you not do it. Not worth the upgrade. Your experience in Windows would be subpar compared to a new PC with a better socket. 771 is too outdated for overwatch. It used to be a pain for me to wait while it loads shit up and it runs fucking hot AND your electricity bill will surge upwards. It's just not cost-efficient

t. Anon who did the same thing you're thinking 2 years ago with a HP wx6600
>>
>>61000345
The problem is a heat sink might cost you more than a better PC. You can get Sandy i5 machines for $110 pretty much every day, so if you're dropping anywhere near that for a second x5450/60 + heat sink + more DDR2, I don't see the value. $12 for a single X5450 is undoubtedly good because it can still get the job done. But you don't get much more going past 4 cores, so if you were thinking of it it'd probably be better to get 4 better cores.

Thanks for all the recommendations. Ill further look into what the cost will be when I add all the components together.

And actually I forgot to mention that there were two of them in the trash. The other machine didn't have a video card in it so I didn't bother booting it.

It has a heat sink and a second processor in it. I did also notice it had way more ram in it.

Not including the cost of extra ram and the second heatsink, would it still be worth it to get 2 better 771 socket xeons and say a 1050? And electricity cost is not a factor.
As far as taking risk with the components, I am willing to take it. This computer won't last long term as I will be graduating soon.

Or should I still grab a sandy bridge PC?

The heatsink is fairly cheap actually.

And one more think to mention...

I am coming from a Pentium 4 machine and this is already ten billion times faster than my previous system.
>>
>>61003026
If you already have another heat sink and more ram, sure, go for two.
>>
>>61003318
Agreed

>>61003138
Yea get the x5450/60 and some ram from the other computers. But do some stress testing on the machine first. Run prime 95 small fft's test for 10 minutes to see if its even stable with the current hw. If it fails, then go get a sandy bridge.
>>
>>61003634
Yeah good advice this a nice middleground between a xeon and a new setup.
