penultimate B.CompSci student here, looking for some advice. I've recently got the urge to start contributing to opensource projects, but I don't really know where to find projects that are the right size for me. I'm scared to work on larger opensource projects as I don't feel like I'm experienced enough to not fuck it up

Please don't. Until you get some professional experience, your contributions are going to be pretty much worthless and a waste of time for whoever reviews them.
A better option is to start your own shitty projects and let other people review and shit on them. That way at least you'll learn something.
