The fuck is the deal with Magic Leap?

Is it a giant fucking scam? An augmented reality gimmick? Or is it actually legit?
>>
>>60937026
Revolutionary tech that currently can't be scaled up for mass production . Its not a theranos, but it's not an Apple either. Expect a consumer version of their light field tech at around 2020. I've been following the ML subreddit for years and there's a good chance that they'll release their devkit early next year.
>>
>>60937115
How in the everloving fuck does "light field" technology work? All the videos I've seen about it were so vague and full of buzzwords I was sure it was a scam.
>>
>>60937026
>Is it a giant fucking scam?
Yes.

They have produced nothing from all of the money they have had invested.
>>
Investor scam

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEMP3XEgnws
if I'm understanding it correctly "Magic Leap" is just a camera like this combined with a projector.
>>
>>60937638
sorry meant to link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIfn2Ocy9RU
he likens it to the kinect
>>
>>60937538

It is deceptively simple, where deceptively means shady and scam worthy. It's not that it doesn't work, but it doesn't warrant the investment either. Actual "light field" technology is still largely in trial phase.
>>
>>60937638
Cool. But I don't see any way that fits in a sleek headset, let alone a transparent one

Sounds like scam famalam
>>
>>60937026
>>60937115
It's a scam and not even revolutionary. It's basically an optic fiber (they bundled them up to make it higher resolution but it's still fucking garbage) that projects an image on your eye. It's a fucking bundle of fibers that vibrates around and they try, and fail, to project a good augmented reality image. The whole idea is fucking retarded anyways since you can see through the images, if they wanted to fix they they'd either have to stick a box on your head or make the projector bright enough to blind you.
>>
>>60937026
It's the tech that's going to be the base of project blue beam when (((they))) decide to finally go all in and truly take over.
>>

You're all pretty misinformed
Listen to the Wired magazine editor podcast if you want to know how potentially revolutionary this tech really is.

The tech might be revolutionary but Magic Leap is an investment scam.

Much like Infinite Detail.
>>
>>60939860
Well since Google's CEO sits on the Magic leap board, I'm sure if the tech proves too difficult to commercialise, and Abovitz mislead them, Google could just buy them out and let their more competent engineers figure out how to commercialise their light field tech.

>Magic Leap’s allegedly revolutionary augmented reality technology may in fact be years away from completion and, as it stands now, is noticeably inferior to Microsoft’s HoloLens headset, according to a report from The Information
>one of these videos — showing an alien invader video game that let the wearer of the supposed headset or glasses make use of real-world objects — was created by visual effects studio Weta Workshop. Prior to today, it was believed Weta had simply created the visual assets for the game. However, The Information reveals the entire video was created by the studio
>“This is a game we’re playing around the office right now,” reads the video’s description — an assertion that could not have been true
>The Information received a rare product demonstration at Magic Leap, describing the device as a large helmet that connects to a desktop computer using multiple cables. The demo is described as having elements similar to the HoloLens, but with images that are in some cases blurrier and more jittery than Microsoft’s prototype
>The crux of the problem appears to be Magic Leap’s gamble on a so-called fiber scanning display
>According to The Information, Magic Leap still has not been able to get the fiber scanning display to work. It has since demoted it to a long-term research project. “You ultimately in engineering have to make tradeoffs,”Abovitz said in the interview. Still, the company’s latest prototype appears to be the size of a standard pair of glasses. It’s known internally as the PEQ, for product equivalent, and yet Magic Leap declined to demonstrate it for The Information. Abovitz claims it is only slightly less capable than the earlier, tethered prototypes, but denied that it now uses technology similar to the HoloLens.
TLDR: it's a scam and they're trying to make a shitty Hololens clone to damage control

It's just google glass.
It's obviously just some piece of reflecting glass and those retards talk bullshit how it magically manipulates photons and shit.

Same scam as Juicero.

I've seen it happen years before. Rich people don't rise their child properly, then Richy don't know how to spend its money and invest in any T E C H N O L O G Y crap people tell them about. Just check all those projects to make water of thin air using solar power or windmills in the desert that gets funded promising to end thirst in Africa.

Companies are stopping making 3D TVs.
3D movies aren't really being made anymore.
Google Glass was a non-starter, especially as it raised many questions about privacy.
Mobile VR is a gimmick, nothing more.
VR still remains to be seen, too early in the game still.

This is a technology board. If you don't follow tech enough to know that much then you shouldn't even bother being here.

My eight main stumbling blacks are.

1. resolution is far too low. I don't want to see any pixels.
2. Field of view is too narrow.
3. I wear prescription glasses. I would ideally like a headset where I can focus to my prescription without wearing my specs.
4. Too heavy to wear for long periods.
5. Needs to be wireless.
6. Motion sickness.
7. Setup should not requires room sensors.
8. I don't wish to be stumbling over furniture or walking into a wall.

This list started out with three bullet points but got steadily longer as I was typing it.
>>
>>60940968
The implementation is hugely updated though, what remains to be seen is if they can deliver it as a product that people will pick up en masse or whether it will remain one of those things that pops up again every once in a while with a new coat of paint.

>>60941082
Mobile VR is definitely a gimmick. I have tried it myself, it's interesting for about 5 minutes but that's about as long as you want to spend using it at a time.
Not for motion sickness or any of that jazz, it's just not comfortable and not interesting enough to bother with often.

I think you mean Unlimited Detail, you plebe.
And yet again you whiners are retarded, the tech has been shown to work countless fucking times by people that know more than the entirety of /g/ to the power of itself twice.
Shut the fuck up about your stupidity already.
There's a fucking building where people can see it running in realtime for fuck sake.
Stop it already. Seriously. Stop crying because you can't have your unlimited detail in your shitty CoD of Duty games.
The only thing retarded with Unlimited Detail and Euclideon is their childish hatred of the GPU industry because they were told to fuck off when they barely had a tech demo running.
>>
>>60945344
I watched their videos, did they end up just making software for laser scanning based on that engine? Does it mean it's unusable for real-time vidya?
>>
>>60940425
>how do they live with themselves
Very comfortably.
>How can any one of them sleep at night?
They can afford the very best mattresses.
>>
>>60937538
Alright listen up.

They use this tech:

https://youtu.be/AoWi10YVmfE

Femto-Second Lazers coupled with a new type of resonance tech that excites air molecules efficiently. Unlike the one in the video above theirs cannot be "felt" but in exchange create less pollution and are very efficient in terms of power usage.

>>60937115
This, any bleeding edge consumer product isn't really going to be actually useful too much and is more of just a "I have money to burn so I bought this cool looking thing to show off to people." You do need to go through that though in order for it to become usable to the average consumer. There has to be companies like this to exist that will most likely fail to push things forward.

They have some "VR" like games in a projection-theatre type setting.
Basically like Kinect in front of 360 degree screen or some shit.
In fact, maybe 180 degree.

As for games, it could be done with a good few more years solid development.
They've made a physics engine that works in it.
They (and by they I mean that prick that started it) just need to get their fingers out of their asses and hire an actual graphics dev to do proper lighting.
That's the reason it looks so shit despite the high fidelity, the horribly shitty lighting. It's full-bright, no shadows, no nuffin.
A lick of shading will make it look amazing. Nope, "we don't need graphics cards cuz we like can do search really fast and junk".
Meanwhile in the 90s graphics department.
Even fucking Minecraft got a decent lighting system when Notch was around and he is a worse developer than they are for sure.
Speaking of that fat cunt, it was funny when Notch starting arguing with them on Twitter then promptly got shit on big time when Hard OCP did an interview with a live demo being shown off. He sure shut the fuck up after that one kek
You can take ANY game and remove natural lighting and go full-bright and make it look atrocious. Lighting is crucial to believable worlds.
Even adding natural lighting to fucking Bubsy 3D would have made it look decent.
It kills me knowing they are making another Bubsy. Fucking wat
Of course, you can go too far and end up with Doom3. Oh boy.
This is why even films use dark blues and purples in dark scenes rather than fucking black, black and more black. Blacks should be used sparingly in media unless it has a very specific purpose. When it overstays its welcome, it just ruins things. (/pol/ just had a mini orgasm at that sentence)
