You know there's a thing called virtual machines, right? You can build your own kernel and test it in the VM to make sure it works and then at a later point dual boot.

Pretty easy to switch between kernels if you use distro build methods. Honestly though, why would you bother? If it worries you enough, make sure you have a good live distro at hand like Finnix which will help you fix anything.
