I was thinking about hosting a webserver on a Raspberry pi zero w.

I plan on using said server to store some images and a mysql database to use for some android apps

Would it work or would the Raspberry crap itself?

AWS is a hassle, the pi will be fine for what you have in mind, 512mb is totally fine for a small webserver.

I seen small sites working on RP 1-3 working very good.i want to do the same for a backup server that is connected to it and only allows access to my mac addy and complex user and pass

Don't get a zero.
Get atleast a pi3 with ethernet. Doenst matter if it is just 100mbits, but pings will be A LOT better.
I am hosting a blog on my raspi2 myself and it works perfectly fine
