Dear wielders of the mighty soldering iron. They say you're not supposed to do the 12-5=7 trick because your PSU won't like it.
I don't like to use resistors because I had a Noctua resistor that came with a fan catch fire once.
So please have a look at pic related. Is it actually that easy?

well yeah, that's what a voltage regulator is for.
>>60927448
Get a datasheet for your regulator: http://www.ti.com/general/docs/lit/getliterature.tsp?genericPartNumber=LM7800&fileType=pdf
>>60927557
I don't speak datasheet though
>>60927620
these two funjy things on both sides marked C1 and C2 are capacitors, this brick is voltage regulator, three funny lines on bottom is ground
>>60927669
you can probably drop the capacitors for your application.
>>60927669
Yeah I know the ground one. Why the caps? Is that not a data sheet for a variable voltage one?
I was imagining something that just straight sets it to 7V
>>60927700
Read the asterisks on >>60927557
It's for "fixed-voltage regulators", yeah that straight sets to 7.
>>60927700
they are smooth capacitors, just to make signal more stable.
>>60927733
What constitutes "far"?
Also does that mean Input is connected straight to ground through a capacitor?
Oh well this is happening now. It can't hurt to learn.
>>60927810
Capacitor is made of two unconnected plates, so they are not connected. They are close enough that when you connect voltage to one pin and ground to second on the capacitor charges itself with electrons (fahrads tells you how much of them). When you disconnect voltage the electricity from capacitor flows back to circuit. The bigger capacitor the longer it takes to load/unload it

>What constitutes "far"?
Read the section 8.2.1 of the datasheet.
>>60927857
Very cool. Thanks
>>60927620
Are you retarded?
Thanks again guys. I think this will be a fun little project.
I need to find out how hungry my fans are, so I know how many one regulator can wrangle without getting hot.
>>60928037
No just uninitiated
I'll be better at it than you in a few weeks though, so don't worry
>>60928089
You will probably just spend all your time shitposting on 4chinz
>>60928241
I don't see how those two things are mutually exclusive
>>60927918
inb4 you buy invert the polarization of an electrolytic cap
