Personal/portable music player thread /pmp/

Useful guide(s) & News
• Converting an iPod video 5G/5.5G to a rockboxed player with an msata SSD and a 3000 mAh battery http://nullvoid.station.moe/Freedom-Hardware/Video5G-Rockbox/
• Rockbox 3.14 released, battery life for Sansa clip claims to be doubled for some
• Got any? Want them included in the OP of future /pmp/ threads? Then post them itt!

Why use a pmp and not a phone?
• Aside from this tired old bait, dedicated devices are subjectively more comfortable when you want a dedicated player with a large storage capacity
• you want a small player for physical activities
• you want a dedicated player in situations where you don't want your phone tied to any cords

Nice! Is this going to be a thing now?

What are the chances of Microsoft opening up on the Zune software so we can finally get some Rockbox support on there?

my phone has replaced everything and sometimes I think it's kind of a shame that dedicated devices for a lot of things are no longer needed. when I look at old sony walkmans, minidisc players, etc. it's sad to think that they're totally irrelevant now. sometimes I want one just to have one because of how cool they look, but I know I wouldn't use it when I can have just have one device in my pocket that fixes it all. I miss that era of industrial design with dedicated hardware buttons, knobs, now it's all just touchscreens.
>>
I'm using this. the battery life is as advertised. I was using a clip+ before but the battery died in less than 5 hours. I went nuclear with this one.

The firmware is shit tier and even though I can put a 64GB SD cards, it only plays 4000 songs.

I miss rockbox. Too bad it's dead.

I was always kind of amazed at how long my MD player would run on just a single AA battery, especially since I remember the days of CD players that would go through a pair of AAs in no time at all.

I recently dug it out of my closet (pic is not mine, but same model), and even got the software and drivers working on my Win7 desktop. LP2 still results in reasonably decent sound quality. Still, though, it can't compete with the convenience of my Sansa or my phone.

What if you have a huge amount of songs? I think it is better to use a search function (like the one in VLC for android) rather than using the "next" button in a pmp
>>

You don't need a touchscreen to search your library.

Right, but if you are looking for a specific song. It will take some time, doesn't it?

I use a dragonfly black on my desktop to drive my dt990 250ohm and hyper clouds. I unplug it from it's usb extender in the morning on the way out the door and keep it in my pocket connected to the usb otg and my Sony XBA-H1 iem's.
I use it with USB Audio Player Pro on my Galaxy s4 with it's 128gb sd to play my flac.
It's not perfect but it didn't cost me anything and while the dragonfly is really inadequate for the dt990's it is night and day with the IEMs they sound much better.

also to add all the points in op are nonsensicle. you can have large capacity on any phone (sd + large base)
you can choose to use flight mode or similar and have a long battery
you can use a strap for your phone when running, and shouldnt listen to music when do excersise anyway
>>

>>
Copied from another thread, phonefags get out

>I'm sat here right now with my phone and MP3 player. There are multiple reasons as to why I will always use a dedicated device for music.

>1) Battery - Since I use my phone for other things, the battery is unreliable and unpredictable. I'm not adjusting my phone usage just so that I can listen to music, whereas my MP3 player can easily last 50 hours on a single charge, it's currently on 75% and I haven't charged it since Sunday. My phone is on 7% and would be pretty useless if I wanted to use it right now for listening to music.

>2) Storage - Again, I use my phone for other things, so storage is unreliable. I could carry around multiple SD cards but that would be a hassle, if I want to use my phone like I would normally do and listen to music I would have to switch cards every 20 minutes.

>3) Sound quality - Dedicated devices are better, no real explanation needed there.

>4) Physical buttons - It's much easier to navigate blind, and just generally easier to navigate.

>You can not argue with these points, trying to just makes you look retarded.
>>
>>60925991
holy shit this has to be bait since all those points are weak as fuck.

you can get sd cards that are 256gb now days
you can get phones with batteries that last two days with frequent use, and portable batteries exsist
quality is the exact same
last point is granted, but you can still bind controls to volume buttons (as ive done) and power button if you have a case that allows it
>>
>>60926030
>Quality is the same
That's clearly not true since they have a miniscule amount of space and cost for the DAC and amp their sound capability will always be a shit compromise with a weakling amp and a DAC from furby or some shit
>>
>>60926126
all good dacs sound the same, a/b blind tests between similar priced things show this, and even in onboard motherboard vs dacs no one could tell the difference. There was even a post on headfi about this a long time ago
>>
Why would they use a good DAC when 99.99% of normalfags don't care and they can save a dollar per phone
>>
>>60925939
by turning on airplane mode to get "more battery life" you're losing all of the extra features you would have gotten by using a phone for music, at that point you just have a really big, really fragile mp3 player
>>
>>60926030
>you can get sd cards that are 256gb now days
I have one in my MP3 player. It's over half full. I have a 64gb one in my phone that it is filled up every few weeks. I archive the files onto a 4TB harddrive. So yes, storage is an issue.

>you can get phones with batteries that last two days with frequent use, and portable batteries exist
So carry something around that is just as big as an MP3 player as a backup battery? My phone doesn't even have a removable battery. I like my current phone enough to not warrant getting a new one for a while.
>quality is the exact same
No it isn't.

>you can still bind controls to volume buttons (as ive done) and power button if you have a case that allows it
Sounds awful.
>>
>>60926317
get a bigger sd card, i have a 128gb in my phone and take my videos and pics off it once a week). I think its got 50gb of music on it.
>>
>>60925991
>Sound quality
>He thinks his $20 sansa clip mac beats my $1.3k iPhone 7 plus red edition limited edition payed in ca$$$$h
>>
>>60926339
The same issues will arise. If I put 200gb (which continues to expand) of music onto my phone, my phone will have less storage for what I want to use it for. Again, I am not adjusting my phone usage just so I can listen to music.
>>
>>60926382
Generally speaking the Sansa Clip won't. It's pretty average on sound quality and has an audible hiss, but I don't use a Sansa Clip.
>>
>>60926384
that doesnt adjust phone usage, it adjusts sd card size. If youre telling me that youre going to have more that 192 gb of music on your phone then thats just ridiculous, but you can still get a 512gb card.
>>
>>60926435
Yes it does. If I am unable to store files on my phone it's rendered useless. Having less storage means archiving files more often which is a hassle. I'm sorry my needs are different than yours.
512gb cards are more expensive than my MP3 player and phone combined, so no it's not an option. The first point 1 is still a valid reason too.

I still wish Microsoft would just open source all the Zune HD code they had and dump it for anyone to make use of. The hardware was great, the display was great, it was a very capable device but as usual it was crippled by Microsoft's stupidity in locking it down on so many levels.

Would still love to have a 64GB Zune HD and I look for them on eBay from time to time, pretty rare these days and whenever they do get listed the owners almost always want a shitload of cash for 'em, like $250+ which is crazy fucking insane but I understand why they ask such prices.

Damned shame, it really was, had so much potential and just didn't get a proper chance to survive.

Fuck you, Microsoft, fuck you.

QUESTION TIME /pmp/;

What was your VERY first portable media player ?

Mine was the Sony Walkman WM-EX122 (or possibly one of those kid walkmans that came with a microphone attached) still have fond memories of making mixtapes using my dad's Cassette deck and stereo radio for that walkman though. Sony wasn't kidding about these having MEGA BASS either.

simply untrue, while many may have annoying menus to navigate, simple controls are well implemented on many devices. Zune HD for example has it's side button that pops up basic controls, it's all you need and I can use it without ever looking at the device. Even after a year of not using it I never have this problem.

It's actually alright. But it's not great or anywhere near excellent. But you know what, I actually don't care. The audio quality is fine for it's usage.

This one isn't for intensive listening to all the nuances of some piece of music. It's TINY. It weighs absolutely nothing. It's got a clip on the back. It's totally perfect for jogging, working out and everything of that nature.

It's only got about two hours of battery life. And as I said, the audio is just alright, it's not great. So it's not something you want as your main daily music player. But as a feather-light tiny exercise player it's totally worth the three bucks I paid for it.
>>
Picked up a Cowon Plenue D over the weekend and tested it out on a roadtrip down to Chicago and back today. Great little player, all no-frills with great sound and a ludicrous battery life. Has one of the most intuitive, out of the way button placements I've ever experienced, too. Sound seemed much cleaner than my Fiio X1 1st gen, too. I love the X1, but apparently it added a lot to the low end that wasn't necessary.

X1's still great, I'd say it was only a mistake if you prefer the aesthetic of the X2, need Bluetooth functionality, or paid the same price (I think 2nd gen is ~$100 street price, where 1st gen should be ~$70 or less). They're both great DAPs for the money.
>>
>>60960166

For IEM recommendations, if you are looking to spend <$50, ask /csg/ or check their OP copypasta at the top of the thread. For >$50, ask /hpg/, but be prepared to fill out the form (check the OP) so they can help you narrow it down.

As far as what DAP to recommend, let us know what matters the most to you (price, form factor, battery life, bluetooth/wi-fi, line out options [3.5mm, balanced, optical], tactile buttons/controls vs touch screen, etc) and then we can help you make an informed decision.

I don't want to go anymore than 400$, and what matters to me the most is audio quality.
About ten hours of battery life would be good.
Around 128 gigs of space would be what I want, but if it's just something like 16 and it can expanded to 128 with microSD then that's fine.
Don't need bluetooth or wi-fi, but I don't mind if it has them.
I believe 3.5mm is what most IEMS are, correct? If so, that's what I want.
No preference on buttons or touch screen, but if it's touch screen I need to be able to change songs quickly like it's a phone.
Sorry for the lengthy post, still really new to anything /g/ related.

>>60960764

It sounds like the x5 gen 3 is right up your alley then, although you will need an SD card to get that 128 gb which [assuming that you don't already have one] puts you over the proposed budget. Other options include the Cowon Plenue D, the Fiio X5 Gen 2 (which is still really solid and much cheaper now that the Gen 3 is out) and the Opus #1. There's actually a lot of players that fit your criteria, so I'd dig around if you don't need one right this second.

With no hands-on experience with the X3, I can't confidently tell you the answer. All of the ones recommended in >>60961464 have great audio quality, though. If I were you, I'd search around online and find shootouts or reviews with direct comparisons to get a better idea, unless you live in/around a major metropolitan area and have a hi-fi store where you can demo some units. Otherwise, if anyone here has impressions on said units, they could feel free to sound off.

I had been looking at the X5 2nd gen, but was a bit worried about it being able to handle 100k songs or whatever.
Thanks to this thread I see X5 3rd gen is out, but almost $200 more in CAD. But it seems it should be able to handle the songs much easier than the 2nd gen.

Anyway, my priority is making use of the 500+GB since I have 5 160GB ipod classics I want to replace with one of these or another that might be similar. Anybody have attempted having so many songs on one device?
>>
>>60964312

>>
What software do you guys use to embed album artwork into flac files? And how do you sort your songs for your mp3 player? Do you go Artist/Album/Song?
>>
>>60964832
I use musicbrainz picard. I'd be interested to hear what other anons use though, because it can shit the bed when trying to tag more than 4 or 5 albums at a time.

My system is as follows. All music I download goes into an unsorted music folder on my external hdd. I transfer music from that folder onto my sd card for my player, via musicbrainz picard, so that they are properly tagged and sorted into nested folders as you describe artist/album/song. The sd card is synced with a sorted music folder on the hdd, so that new additions to the card are synced to the folder but not vice versa.

Once every few weeks I manually sync changes on the hdd to my backup drive.
>>
>>60964489
How are you going to fit 100k songs onto any PMP without compressing the everliving fuck out of them
>>
>>60964489
You can mod one of those ipod classics to have more storage, but you will need to use rockbox if you go over 256GB, because the standard ipod firmware doesn't like it when you have more than about 40k-60k songs due to RAM limitations. I have a 512GB ipod classic and it works well for me.

>>60965375
Which combo did you use? And is it 7g or 6g?

I suppose >>60964489 is an expensive project if it doesn't completely replace my ipod classics.
>>
>>60965596
I used a 7.5G and an mSATA drive which luckily worked fine for me, but the general consensus seems to be that the flash card adapters in the second link are much more likely to work for everyone due to better power consumption specs. I modded a "7.5G" (ipod classic 160GB thin), which is good because it has 64GB of ram unlike other models. From what I read the 5.5G is also good for modding because it's thicker which gives you space to fit more shit like a bigger battery in the case, but one of the advantages of using SSD is lower operating power draw, so the stock battery lasts way longer anyway.

Own a Fiio X3ii
Screen is flaming garbage, playlist support is extremely poor and you have to literally use filepaths and the battery indicator is fucky (goes from 3 bars to shutting off in 10 minutes sometimes) but I can live will all this. I usually put on a playlist on random and put it in my pocket for my entire commute.
Also doubling as a PC DAC/Amp is good. I don't have to spend 100 extra on something like the E10k.
Used an iPod Touch 6 before, heavily loaded with tweaks to remove all the worthless shit they implemented to the music app. I gifted when I "upgraded", and desu sometimes I miss it. It was so simple to use even if I have to use the AIDS that is iTunes,
Will probably ditch it when the iPod Touch 7 comes out. I just think Apple makes the better interfaces when it comes to music.

I had several whatever-brand CD players before I got my first solid state PMP, an MPIO FL300 in high school. I also had an MD Walkman which was perhaps my favorite PMP of all time, but it had issues with the track change buttons and they worked very unreliably.

The FL300 worked great until the battery shorted out against the steel case and it overheated and died in my pocket.
Got an iPod Nano for my birthday that year.

Well... after some days using this (FiioX1 2 and Shure 215) i am really glad to say that finally i´ve got what i wanted. A really good audio experience out of home. I spent a lot of time walking without direction and listening music, i really enjoy walk while listen to music. Its one of my fav hobbies and to get a better experience i wanted some best gear.

The conclusión after this is the following:

- Any good PMP sounds better that any pone (yes, even iPhone, i tested with my brother and father´s one) dont care if is Ruizu, Benjie or Fiio, even Sony or more common marks.

- IEMS or headphones is one of the most important parts, using Shure 215 discover me a new world of sound, now i listen every bass and even the guy touching the strings of the guitar + using IEMs delete the fucking noise of the city, so perfect.

The FLAC meme.....well i dont really know how could be this true but if you listen some good productions of the 70s you can feel it, listening Rod Stewart's "Every picture tells a story" I discover how good can be the FLAC format, take this album *or Thin Lizzy or Bad Company and listen it in MP3 and FLAC, you can find some different details, is curious.

So I want to thank all the anons that support interesting threads like this and helps to make better the life of others, is really interesting.

Is there any decent PMP that can scrobble to Last/Libre FM? Or one that can access Spotify/Tidal? It doesn't have to do both, I am just curious. Bonus points for non-android based, because that's obvious that these can do this, even if that would require sideloading apps.

What do you think about these?
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/FiiO-Dynamic-Earphone-F5-Balanced-Earphone-F5/1473108_32811670598.html?spm=2114.12010612.0.0.9nsSgg
Since I already have a Fiio X1 (2nd Gen) Might as well stay in the family with the headphones.

FiiO X1 MK2 + FiiO EX1 MK2, should I?

>Touchscreen pmp are the stupidest fucking thing.

I would agree with you if my old jailbroken ipod didn't have gestures set up for play controls. It makes changing songs during those interstate (or a 5min) drive a breeze. Changing playlists or albums is a bitch though. I don't think a physical device remedies that issue.

This is the ideal music player. You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.

Xduuo x3 is more rockboxable. It's only slightly more expensive but it seems to already have a rockbox port.
>>
I'm running a Cowon Plenue D driving a pair of ATH-M50x and the quality is wonderful as is being able to use a 128GB SD card but after a year and a half my battery time has gone from 40-50 hours down to between 20-30 per charge. And fuck knows how I'll get the manufacturer to provide a battery or find a repairer in my country when all their support is in fucking Korean. Might have to rip it apart and get a part number off the battery and try eBay / aliexpress for replacement

Any good bluetooth pmp for like 100€ max?
>>
I use a sony nw a35 since i killed my fiio x3ii by using it way too much. At the end of its life the relays started to click and it did a mock blue screen when i put it in the pc. I'd say the best thing about the Walkman is the senseme channels as it gives you themed shuffle play lists.

>>60987432
I don't know what your plebian currency converts to but I'd say for that amount a shanling m2 would probably be good.

Yes but Xduuo X3 have a worse sound quality i tried both in the store and is different, but its true that have more space and is rockboxable

Why not just use an old phone? My old Xperia Z3 comes with a Wolfson DAC and the battery life is awesome when you don't have a SIM card and don't have other shit like Wi-Fi and bluetooth hogging battery.
>>
>>60988664
What's the point? A phone is 3x the size and will have significantly less battery life, also no physical buttons.
>>
>>60988664
Android is still a drain on the battery something that /pmp/ don't have to bother with.
>>
>>60988781
True, but everyone have old smartphone so it's like free pmp
>>
>>60988813
I look at this thread and see a few Android powered ones. What's the difference then? It's not like I can't root it and disable everything I don't need if you wanna be that anal about optimizing everything. This is /g/ right?
>>
>>60988781
No one is asking you to use a Galaxy Note.
>>
>>60988823
I have a few old ones, but I'd never actually consider using them for music.

>>60988859
Even regular sized phones are 3x the size of my current player.

Are there any good ones that can fit in the coin pocket of my pants?

I like the idea of having a dedicated device with a simple folder view and physical buttons, but it ain't of much use if it's cumbersome.
>>
>>60989582
Any of the sansa clips will work. Can't install rockbox on the new models, but the stock firmware is perfectly fine
>>
>>60917259
>>60917305
Holy shit, who the fuck doesn't use lock-screen gestures. I don't even need to take the phone out of my pocket anymore. I'll admit its a bit weird to draw a " > " or " < " shape to skip tracks, but my volume buttons have tactile feedback, and I know if the shape works if the song changes, and pause/play can be achieved by simply sticking the headphone jack in or out.
OP you seem to be pushing an agenda to make yourself feel better about using old devices in your own home.

Feel free to use them, go ahead, earn a few hipster points for being one of the few people that still do in public. Hell, I load up my roommates old iPod with songs and stick my loud-speaker iDevice dock in the kitchen because neither of us gets any use out of the devices by themselves.

But don't come here trying to force your opinion on people who don't care to change how they live their lives if they feel what works for them works just the way it is.

>>60988886
>>60989297
I was referring to these, they look about as big or even bigger than my current Z5 Compact and they run Android too but I believe they are being marketed and sold as PMP, which is what led to my original statement of why not just use an old Android phone.

if you will try it... you will understand, this pmp are high end devices, built to get the best quality sound, cant be compared with a simple smartphone, a mobile can do a lot of things but these are ready to get the best of each song, also have extra fuctions like using Tidal or Spotify. But the sound is really blasting, you dont need to go to the best, just trying a simply Benjie S5 at 12 volume, can hear better thant any mobile at max.

The questionn here is, ok, mobile works and music sounds good, of course. But if you want to go to the next level there are this pmp. Or maybe if you want something that just play music and be light you´ve got a lot of clips
>>
>>60990992
I doubt any of them will be as big as your Z5 compact, but you also have a smartphone that is much smaller than most. Same goes for iPhone se users. The PMP is still specialized, but the size bit applies less to you

Is it normal that on the iPod Video 5.5g (rockboxed with HDD) loading a pretty small FLAC file takes ages?
Even a pretty big AIFF file loads in ~1 second, so I'm wondering why this happens

Better DAC, better battery, weights almost nothing, is smaller, nigger proof since they won't rob a broke ass motherfucker who carries a mp3 player instead of the latest ifuccboi 7s+plus REMIX Tim Cuck's Edition.

>>61000901
This is such bullshit. Most phones have excellent DACs even the lower end ones. The headphone amps are also much better in mid-high end phones.
