pretty simple in concept:
make every level a new and engaging challenge. Better to make the game short and sweet rather than drawn out and dull
progression systems make the player feel more rewarded and drive them to the next achievement
progression can take many forms, from new items to item upgrades to levels with skill trees.
deliver the story through game mechanics as much as possible, then supplement the remaining story with cutscenes/dialogue
