I hate this so much. It's not even the fault of Linux, in my case it's the fault of the guys working on the amdgpu drivers. Wish they didn't deprecate the fglrx/Catalyst driver, because it actually worked on my computer. Now I just get a black screen. To use fglrx I have to use an old version of xorg.

the biggest problem I ever faced when setting up a fresh nix install is font rendering, infinality does help though

Nope. I never had any problems whatsoever. I remember installing nvidia drivers was a bit annoying years ago though.
