Workstation thread. Ryzen has nothing on my 16 core 32 thread dual Xeon setup. Also no corelets i7 6700k users get out.

Also build log video I guess:

and what do you use all of those cores for exactly?
>>
>>60862061
Video rendering is the only thing I've done that actually uses it, I might try some VM stuff later.

Probably could have gotten away with a single xeon, but I had 2 laying around from a previous project.

You must be desperate to justify your xeon by comparing it with a ryzen

Wait till Epyc comes out

Another dual xeon heat sufferer!
Have a 1070 and 950gt in mine for VFIO.

Overall it's been pretty sweet with 64gb of ram, Takes awhile to boot from power off due to the pci-e enumeration steps, but it was a great build for less than a grand.
>>
>>60862506
That's not a xenon
>>
>>60862453
I like the idea of building a Ryzen system (board has Audio, M2, Usb C, etc) but are those crazy cpu's even necessary and what will be the net performance increase? Other than heat

>Xeon
>2 processors that each use more power than a threadripper

>>
>>60862754
Well as a programmer I have stuff compiling in the background almost at all times. Ryzen allows me to actually multitask. I can compile Linux, convert video, and play AAA games all at the same time using my 1700X
>>
>>60862707
I'm jealous of the ram, 8gb of ddr3 is a little bit too low for me.

The air-conditioner mostly fixes the heat problem.
>>
>>60862828
Thinking about it, outside of gaming it isn't that bad. These cpu's are very good at going into low power states in Linux, but under Windows it definitely gets warm.
>>
>>60862883
I might put debian on it again, I kindof want to get some better ssds to raid 0. Patriot blazes are a bit dissapointing in raid 0

I like your videos OP, always mildly entertaining and nice to watch. Dual Xeon setup with 3 monitors will heat up a lot and have high power consumption. Adding in 2 air conditioners is even worse, which means your power bill will probably be very high. Waiting for Epyc would've been the better move famalam.
>>
>>60863094
pls get core 2 quad. This makes me sad.
>>60863159
Thanks desu. My lease didn't have utilities for a while ,but they changed the policy after last semester..

Also I don't think I have epic money.. I bought the xeons a while back and this was cheaper then getting a ryzen.

Watercooling for a 12 core ES? Also 1050W PSU for a single graphics card? Eww. The Extreme6 mobo I approve though.
>>
>>60864900
Any reason why you got Windows 10 Education?

Or a GTX 1080 Ti + 1060?

And very hot drives? Normal operating temperature for HDDs is 5 - 50C, and you're right at 50C for the 3TB Toshibas. You might want to put a small fan next to them to prolong their life so they don't just die suddenly taking your data with it.

They're beta versions of chips. They have bugs no one knows about because the errata datasheets are covered under NDAs. Because of this they're cheap as shit on ebay. Retards on /g/ buy them because they dont know better.

pic related that you should of used these instead of the hot glue as that will wear off in time.

they cost me $27 NZD + shiping
way cheaper than the the BS you used.

also you are a richfag and this is a richfag thread.
Don't cheap out next time bud.

>>
>>60865043
I was going to overclock it until I found out how limited the OC capability was, also it was either use liquid or some other equally as expensive narrow ILM fan.

Also, the HX1050 is recycled from my old build with two Xeons where I needed its two 8-pin CPU connectors
>>
>>60864759
Since you have knowlege on ES chips, can you help a bro out?
I'm wanting to get another cpu for my dell precision workstation, currently it has a single OEM 2630 v3 in it, would adding an ES 2630 v3 to that work? Or does it need to be either two OEM or two ES?
>>
>>60862046
>fucking 2 seconds in he's using hot glue on an SSD to keep it in the case
holy fuck off
>>
>>60867974
Why do you see this as a problem
>>
>>60867908
ES chips are picky about the board they go in, like they work in Asus/AsRock boards but don't in Gigabyte ones. I wouldn't think an OEM motherboard would support them, especially not a Dell one at that
>>
>>60868469
Well fuck.

And i don't suppose the usual suspects on ebay that sell them would be too pleased with a possible return if i tested one to not work for me.

Any clues where i can get cheapo OEM/genuine xeons? I've got a £60 heatsink sitting here on my desk feeling left out
>>
>>60862707

>wasting 64g on swaps

Jesus son are you retarded?
>>
>>60867908
You can't use ES chips on branded boards. Dell Precision workstation = Not happening.
>>60868508
You don't even need to test it, I can guarantee you with 100% certainty that ES will NOT work on Dell Precision board.
>>
>>60865661

>>
>>60862032
>>60862080
>>60862508
Old Xeons are great for that aren't they? I've got an X5680 at the moment. Throwing a second in next month and looking at slaving in another four X7560s.

X7560 are the old 1567 eight cores. They're $15 each here nowadays.
>>
>>60868664
There are like 4 boards that aren't oem that are 1567 based you can buy, and even then they are very expensive. The best bet to build a system on those chips would be a HP DL580 G7 or a dell R910
>>
>>60868556
What if i sell my soul to the devil?
>>
>>60868813
CPUs only work on boards that have microcode support for them, Dell does not and will not provide this support. Sometimes it's even removed from consumer boards in a BIOS update.
>>
>>60868800
I'm a server technician that specializes in legacy equipment. I have a huge supply of them.

I know what you mean though. 1567 saw pretty much zero home consumer use.
>>
>>60868575
KVM.
One VM for gaming. It's a dual boot with Windows because amazingly a lot of older games perform better in their wrappers or with wine than they would on native windows.

The rest handle various services and are portable in the case of all hell breaking loose with my boot device on my main machine until I can shift it over to ZFS as well.
>>
>>60865833

I've looked at the pass mark scores and the dual xeons are slightly faster, but not many programs will use all 16 cores. Video editing stuff makes use of them though.

Also I am emotionally traumatized I burnt out a trash been Sony Vaio that I thought I fixed up.

I need to buy more ram. It requires some wierd standard and Ithought I could use the standard ddr3 stuff I had with my phenom.

I do a bit of video editing, but the cpu is a bit excessive. Probably only needed a single xeon.
