Why is everyone suggesting we buy these old shitty Thinkpad to run a Linux distros on?
>>
I need a new computer that I can carry around with me and just get shit done on it.

I just bought a $200 T420s that has the same processor, same ram, same ssd, and same graphics card that a new MacBook would have and I saved $1,000+.

That's why.

They're good for the price (in fact, performance-wise, mobile CPUs have hardly improved since Sandy Bridge), fully accessible, meaning no soldered parts (you can even replace CPU), and models <**30 have promising Coreboot/libreboot support. Plus trackpoint, keyboard, etc. Only real downsides are:
>power consumption on models sandy bridge and older
>new battery will cost you more than the laptop itself
>utterly abysmal screens (even the IPS are blue and 16:9 cancer ratio)
But you get used to even the worst screen for everything except viewing media. Basically, they're less of a consumer device than every other laptop.

Because it is the best thing to recommend to someone.

Nobody cares about your problems, but you people keep asking "what do you recommend?" and you people wont go away before you get an answer.
thinkpads are a great answer.
They are not terrible, they are cheap and there is no problems if you run gnu/linux.

Now you are in a situation where you asked someone for a recommendation and they have given you one.
You can either use the advice or reject it.
If you use the advice, problem solved.
If you reject the advice, it is probably because you found something better, problem solved.

It is also fun that it triggers apple fags that there has not been any real development in laptops that makes it worth buying a new laptop.
>>
>>60859010
Because new ones are insanely overpriced, I'd even say more overpriced than Macbook Pros. However nothing loses quite value like Thinkpads, so used ones are great value.

I just assume that you literally never even saw a Macbook Pro in real life. The aluminium is matte, you see absolutely no fingerprints at all.

Mine is two years old, I never took especial care of it at all and there's no scratches on it. Besides, who gives a shit. It's a tool, you use it, it looks used at some point. Difference is, macbooks still look good after a few years.

You think you save so much money, but in reality, you are paying with your time and nerves. Random keys stop working, super dim display with a 1° viewing angle and dead pixels all over, slow and loud, seen it all. In the end it's all about how much you value yourself and your time. If you are working with that machine every single day for several hours, do yourself a favor and pay something worthwhile.

Thinkpads depreciate in value rather quickly, but the hardware is still acceptable and lasts a long time. For neckbeards that have to pick apart their computers to be happy, they're nice little computers. Therefore, for these people, computers that have to be modified to be usable are no problem at all.

For people who want a cheap, usable computer, I recommend a fancy chromebook or used macbook. No troll there.

If you get a Thinkpad, upgrade the screen to whatever the absolute best option is for your model. Doing this will make using said Thinkpad... acceptable. Even with the best screen option, it will still be inferior to most laptops on the market, and light years behind a Macbook. Matte screens are ass and a meme; no one uses their laptop outside.

Old Dell latitudes are arguably a better value now. There are other brands/models in this range too. Thinkpad craze caught on because people realized what an economical choice it was and supply some years ago was pretty decent.

The problem is that it became a fad and instead of being a solid budget pick for thrifty people looking to work on the go, it became the hot geekchic item for retro-tech-fetishist manchildren ricers who name their laptop Sakuya and talk about how "comfy" their ZSH setup is. The popularity ruined supply/pricing.

For 230 bucks I got a laptop with quality build, an i5, 4GB of RAM, SSD, good keyboard and a 1600x900 screen.

That's the reason I got it.

But it weights a ton.

CPU performance made leaps in the 6 year period between 2005 and 2011.
But in the same 6 year period between 2011 and 2017 the performance difference is nowhere near that massive.

A 2011 hardware will perform just fine for daily use.

You get a used T420. You put an SDD, 16GB and swap the CPU for a quad core i7. You get accessories like additional batteries, a docking station for convenience. You get a cheap chink ExpressCard to PCI-E 4x. adapter, you get your buddy to surrender his old desktop GPU he no longer uses.
At the end for the price of a new consumer garbage toy like applel products you get a slightly clunky (nowhere near gaymen monstrosities) powerful laptop that's still portable, that doubles as an pretty good desktop machine and a pretty-average-but-still-doable gaming machine whenever you fucking want. And you know it won't fail you because it was built better than anything you get today.

Proper GNU/Linux support. And by 2018 T420 and X220 is expected to get coreboot support fixed and enable libreboot support.

Oh haha right I forgot you need to sorround yourself with branding like the corporate-loving garbage you are to give yourself a semblance of being worth something.
>>
>>60867324
which one? T420/T430 is pretty light
>>
>>60868491
T420.

I find it uncomfortable for long walks, but probably due to the shitty mailman style bag I had. I'm sure it would be fine with a proper backpack.

>need carry on a bike
Are you holding it in your hand the entire ride?

I carry a lot of stuff on a bike including my whole fucking uniform with steal toed boots, food for entire 24h duty and the weight of my laptop was never a concern.

I think it's time to stop sucking cocks my friend.
Rain is not the end of the world, 1kg more doesn't make a difference.

>>

If you carry 10kg anyway, 1kg doesn't make for a huge difference, but if you only carry 1.5kg + laptop, the difference between a MacBook Air and a T420 is very noticeable.
>>
>cheap
>decent build quality
>decent specifications
>easy to upgrade, if it even needs it
Went from 2011 Macbook Air to a T420 with i5 2430m and oh god it's so much smoother with no thermal throttling, which means it stays at 3GHz most of the time, I can add an SSD to it for relatively cheap if I wanted faster storage for any reason, and I can upgrade it to an i7 if I needed to.
Although admittedly, I only got the 420 because I got sniped for bidding on a W520

protip: if you can't remember that the president 25 years ago was george bushes papa you don't belong here.
>>
>>60872957
the problem with that is the fact that 75% is already more than I need for a portable web browser/text editor/media player and the extra 25% costs $1000+

The average consumer grade laptop feel like complete shit in term of build quality and they have garbage tier keyboards even compared to a rubber dome keyboard.
The only downside is that older integrated graphics are fucking garbage.

Dunno, they used to be cheap where I live but sellers caught on the meme. Imho for what they cost the Elitebooks are a slightly better alternative now, but I still preffer the aesthetics of memepads.

where the fuck are you buying macbooks? they're $1200 which is only 1.5 weeks of working after bills are deducted.

and that's perfectly fine for your usage scenario. a $30 raspberry pi is also suitable for those needs or a $100 chromebook or a thinkpad t42 not t420

holy shit the bottom bezel on that

computers are like cars. if you take care of them and occasionally replace a part they will last a long time. this is why a secondary market exists

if you are an idiot who loves waste then you probably scoffed at what i just typed
>>
>>60859041
I bought my t530 for $120, get fucked.
>>
No computer could get close to the performance i get on my thinkpad, for what i paid. Even after i buy a chink battery, there would still be no computer close to what my t420 offers.

I would still prefer a modern notebook, but i think it's undeniable how cheap and well builty those are.

IF i had the money tho, i would buy a t470, no doubt.
>>
>>60873577
Forgot to add, even with an old hdd, Xubuntu runs great on it. Perfect browsing and coding machine.

Pair it with a 9cell battery and you have a pretty portable machine, tough not even close to what new kaby-lake devices can offer usually.
>>
>>60873334
what specs because I got mine for 250 i7 quad core 8gb of ram plus 180gb ssd
>>
>>60859010
They work better than my 1300 macbook or mac mini, both new.
