I just bought a $200 T420s that has the same processor, same ram, same ssd, and same graphics card that a new MacBook would have and I saved $1,000+.

Thinkpads depreciate in value rather quickly, but the hardware is still acceptable and lasts a long time. For neckbeards that have to pick apart their computers to be happy, they're nice little computers. Therefore, for these people, computers that have to be modified to be usable are no problem at all.

For people who want a cheap, usable computer, I recommend a fancy chromebook or used macbook. No troll there.

If you get a Thinkpad, upgrade the screen to whatever the absolute best option is for your model. Doing this will make using said Thinkpad... acceptable. Even with the best screen option, it will still be inferior to most laptops on the market, and light years behind a Macbook. Matte screens are ass and a meme; no one uses their laptop outside.

Old Dell latitudes are arguably a better value now. There are other brands/models in this range too. Thinkpad craze caught on because people realized what an economical choice it was and supply some years ago was pretty decent.

CPU performance made leaps in the 6 year period between 2005 and 2011.
But in the same 6 year period between 2011 and 2017 the performance difference is nowhere near that massive.

A 2011 hardware will perform just fine for daily use.

You get a used T420. You put an SDD, 16GB and swap the CPU for a quad core i7. You get accessories like additional batteries, a docking station for convenience. You get a cheap chink ExpressCard to PCI-E 4x. adapter, you get your buddy to surrender his old desktop GPU he no longer uses.
At the end for the price of a new consumer garbage toy like applel products you get a slightly clunky (nowhere near gaymen monstrosities) powerful laptop that's still portable, that doubles as an pretty good desktop machine and a pretty-average-but-still-doable gaming machine whenever you fucking want. And you know it won't fail you because it was built better than anything you get today.

Proper GNU/Linux support. And by 2018 T420 and X220 is expected to get coreboot support fixed and enable libreboot support.

Went from 2011 Macbook Air to a T420 with i5 2430m and oh god it's so much smoother with no thermal throttling, which means it stays at 3GHz most of the time, I can add an SSD to it for relatively cheap if I wanted faster storage for any reason, and I can upgrade it to an i7 if I needed to.
Although admittedly, I only got the 420 because I got sniped for bidding on a W520

The average consumer grade laptop feel like complete shit in term of build quality and they have garbage tier keyboards even compared to a rubber dome keyboard.
The only downside is that older integrated graphics are fucking garbage.

Dunno, they used to be cheap where I live but sellers caught on the meme. Imho for what they cost the Elitebooks are a slightly better alternative now, but I still preffer the aesthetics of memepads.

I bought my t530 for $120, get fucked.

No computer could get close to the performance i get on my thinkpad, for what i paid. Even after i buy a chink battery, there would still be no computer close to what my t420 offers.

I would still prefer a modern notebook, but i think it's undeniable how cheap and well builty those are.

IF i had the money tho, i would buy a t470, no doubt.

Forgot to add, even with an old hdd, Xubuntu runs great on it. Perfect browsing and coding machine.

Pair it with a 9cell battery and you have a pretty portable machine, tough not even close to what new kaby-lake devices can offer usually.
