What is in your opinion the best cipher for encrypting relatively short text messages (new key is used every 256 bytes)? I'm looking for something that can easily be implemented in hardware.

No one here actually does cool things.
One time pad would be easy and is backed by cool math. Just sync the two devices to the same seed for the RNG.

otp is cool as fuck but the idea of building cipher machines using only cheap hardware is cooler
lightweight ciphers are also interesting because you can easily remember the design and reconstruct them from scratch
