Id say Leopold since they come with better keycaps. However since this is all preference you're better off trying them yourself at a brick and mortar store like keyboard hell in Mk.

Keyboard hell is in Sham Shui Po now.

That's what I was going to do but if hell guy recs me two different Leopold at same size factor I don't think I can differentiate much. With Leopold, are there things to look out for or to avoid? Thanks anon.

I was about to compete my Amazon order for my budget PC build and I just remembered I need a keyboard. Can any of you keyboard afficianados recommend a CHEAP ($40 or less) keyboard? I just need something basic that isn't too loud. I've been using an HP laptop with chicklet keyboard for the last 5 years if you want to know how low my standards are.

I realize this is like asking a wine connoisseur what the best boxed wine is or a cohiba smoker if they prefer peach or grape white owls, but whatever.

Romer-Gs are Logitech's proprietary switches used on their gaeman boards. Best way I can describe it is an MX Brown with a higher tactile bump.

Note that the space-bar might not be standard so you should ask him, but the bot keycaps which come with the board already great. Other than that at your price it's either the 660 or 750 (MX red) so choose whichever key layout suits you (660 may be too minimal for some, it also doesn't have front facing font).

I have an MK Fission because it was the cheapest way to get MK clears. But I feel like the key polling has some kind of timing bug. It keeps dropping keys that I know actuate and it keeps reordering keys that I know were pressed in a different order, more than a millisecond apart. Should I tear it open and replace the electronics with a teensy? I have the skills and know how, I know don't know if it's worth the effort.

It's very old and outdated. The buyer's template is much better since there are just too many keyboards out there. It's:

but I wouldn't use it since there are better keyboards, and some of the ones on there have been discontinued
>>
>>60795090
Oh okay, that makes sense. I just wanted to look around for options, since I'm starting to think my full size keyboard doesn't allow for good mouse placement. Though I really don't have a specific request or something.
The faq should be updated then, but I guess it doesn't really matter.

consider something with the 1800 layout. That way you have a number pad, while still having about the same size as a TKL. The 980m in the pic is missing a few keys for the sake of a more standard layout, while the original 1800 has all the keys of a full size keyboard
>>
>>60789982

Leopold's PBT keycaps suck. They have very sharp edges that make them uncomfotable to type on for long periods. Also, they use clipped stabilizers instead of an improved solution to soft cherry stabilizers, which means the stabilized keys are really loud and clanky. If you want a solid TKL, get a KUL ES-87 and put some nice GMKs or dye-sub PBT from China on it.
>>
>>60791812

They all look like shit...
>>
Anyone here have Topres? Are they a meme or are they worth the $200+ premium?
>>
>>60796644
They are a meme, and that is why they cost so much. You can get a cheap topre keyboard like the typeheaven for 140 bucks, then switch out the keycaps for some nice thicc cherry profile PBT for an extra 40 bucks
>>
>>60795790
I don't like how that changes essential key locations like ctrl. I was more thinking of having a separate numpad and arrow keys to the left of the keyboard or something. Then again, I have no idea how available that even is, and I wasn't even planning on spending huge money on a new keyboard when my current one works just fine.
>>
>>60796841
So you want a left handed keyboard? The g80-1800 has all the keys of a full size keyboard, and since its an old design it is verry customizable
>>
>>60789268

Are split/ergonomic keyboards a meme?
>>
>>60797225
Tried one of those Microsoft ergonomic keyboard many years ago.
Was fucking comfy but odd to type on.
If you can get used to it, try it out.
>>
>>60797271
Any good recommendations? I heard the ergo pro is good, but I actually don't have the time, motivation or skills to make one myself, and pre-built ones are either never in stock or overpriced as fuck. The only other one I know of is keyboard.io which is bulkier than your mom and also overpriced because of the hipster wood finish and whatnot.

Are there good, utilitarian, ergonomic mechanical keyboards out there? I wouldn't mind paying $150+ if I'm actually paying for the keyboard (as opposed to either a markup due to demand, or a wooden meme).
>>
>>60791661
If you want something quiet, get a Gateron RED.
>>
>>60791634
Creative is also using Romer-G like switches or Omron switches if you prefer to say.
Logitech probably has the same deal with Omron as they have with Pixart (eg. PMW3366/3360).
Switches feeling a part, but Omron is probably the best manufacturer for this job. Hope they release a red or blue version soon.
>>
>>60797063
I haven't gotten the LED's back up and running yet. I think what I'll do is have input flash whenever you press a key, online for power indicator, system available for connected to computer, and then use the far right for locklights.

>>
>>60798583

>>
Are model Ms a meme? How much should I pay for one? Can they reliably be bought off e.g. ebay without too many problems?
Here in bongistan every listing right now has sky-high shipping so the cheapest I can get one for is like £50. Is that way overpriced? Should I just not bother and find a good modern kb?
>>
>>60798606
Dude, the rivets break from age and use, nothing to do with outside condition. Just open it up and look.
>>
>>60798608
Yes, they're a meme. But memes aren't necessarily bad. Don't pay more than about thirty pounds for one in good shape or fifteen for one in shit shape that needs a lot of work. Get them at auction and not BIN.

They're still one of my favorite kinds of keyboards, I just wish there was a cheap unicomp SSK. Sometimes a guy doesn't want a full sized monster on his desk.
>>
>>60798608
>cheapest I can get one for is like £50.

>grab it asap for £50
>>60798692
>don't pay more than about £30

Fuck, what do I do
>>
>>60798820
Sorry, what I meant is get it for 50 assuming it's from within UK. I can see a bunch of deals for 30, but they're all from US, so not only you'll pay above 50 anyway including shipping, but customs will also slap a charge on top of it.

I doubt you'll ever see Model M in UK for 30 as those are sold exclusively (along with other old but useful equipment) by attic hoarders and computer store pajeets attempting to milk collectors and nostalgia dads. 50 is still a good deal, if you're buying from within UK.
>>
>>60798976
No, it's from fuck-knows-where (i.e. US), but they guy's selling it for $30 or £23. Then shipping is another £23.
Looking at it is also has an import charge of like £7 which wasn't listed on the summary in the search results, which is gay.

I think I'll just hold off on the meme until I have the opportunity to get it for the sake of the meme.

Just bought my first mechanical keyboard, it's a cheap Chinese one, I didn't want to spend a fortune on a keyboard, but maybe I will in the future, so far it feels pretty amazing to type, I'm making some mistakes here and there but slowly adjusting to it.

But, are the keycaps really supposed to be this thin? From time to time my fingers go a little bit over the edge and I end up typing two keys. I don't know if Cherry standard is supposed to be like this or if it's just my keyboard. My old keyboard had large keycaps, so it feels a bit weird.

>>
>>60806611
Fair enough. I wholeheartedly disagree on the switches though. Buckling springs are by far the best tactile 'switches' I have ever used (haven't had the opportunity to try a beam spring yet).

They are definitely more expensive, I agree, but you do get all new components as well as a meta key for your money. IIRC a new Model M cost upwards of $300 (in 1980s money) back in the day so it's not really a reasonable comparison.

PSA to anybody planning to do a custom build using a clear acrylic plate: do NOT use super glue to hold down your switches! It may look fine when you put it on, since it's clear and you only need a tiny drop. But it will produce a white residue slowly as it dries, which will fuck up the entire point of clear acrylic: looking clear. Plus, at that point your switches are stuck so you can't even restart with clean acrylic. It's a good thing I only glued down 2 rows on half my keyboard as a test. The rest is gonna use hot glue instead probably. Still, my board will forever be blemished because I didn't know super glue produced some sort of vapor that leaves a deposit as it dries. You have been warned, learn from my mistake anons.
>>
>>60808384
Have you never used super glue before or something
>>
>>60808384
As another point: if you're gluing together acrylic layers (I'd probably recommend gluing together all layers of a sandwich-style case apart from the bottom obviously), then don't just use super glue, get the proper acrylic weld.

The main reason, apart from the tendency to leave a white residue, is that super glue will bond in like half a second when you use it with acrylic. Proper acrylic glue will look better and be just as strong when set, but most importantly it will take about 20-30 seconds to set, giving you much more time to wiggle around the parts until they're in the right position to clamp down.

However, I didn't think acrylic glue would work on the switches (since they're not acrylic), so I tried using super glue again, figuring that a tiny amount wouldn't fuck things up. I was wrong about that, too.

All in all, it's been a big learning experience, and I haven't even started wiring yet. Sure hope I don't end up wasting $50 worth of switches.
>>
>>60808435
Not on anything clear, no. Also, when I tried to use it to hold together the layers of acrylic (see >>60808448), the white residue didn't spread nearly as much. (That attempt fucked up instead because my layers ended up a bit too far off due to the glue setting before I could adjust it completely)
>>
>>60808435
Secondly, fortunately a majority of the residue came off with some vigorous polishing, so it's not hugely noticeable, especially I imagine once I put the caps on.
>>
>>60806374
I feel like it's so expensive solely because it's in high demand but in low supply because most people don't care to build their own.

If I've literally never touched solder, acrylic, and other related stuff, do you think I could still successfully build one myself or am I better off just coughing up for the ez?
>>
>>60808356
What's the rationality behind opting for split spacebars? How is it better than the more conventional one?
Seriously.
>>
>>60808541
Also, it's actually $300 for the ez.
Are there any other ways to get one? Or are ez and diy the only options?
>>
>>60808541
I think building one yourself would be a lot more fun, but it honestly won't save you much money. You can totally do it though, the skills required aren't anything a middle schooler can't pick up in a couple hours. Soldering that hard since you'll just be attaching stuff to a premade circuit board (which is easy, just watch a video or rad a tutorial). You'll still end up paying a decent amount because there's just not much you can do to make 80 switches, a teensy, the circuit boards, keycaps, and a case be cheap. If you have access to a laser cutter you can cut your own wood or acrylic case for much less money than ordering them online, but all in all you'll still probably end up paying close to $170 or more. You can always just try pricing it out by looking over the parts list here: https://www.ergodox.io/
>>
>>60808609
Hm, I guess if the ez is $300, then building it yourself actually is much cheaper. Not aware of any other premade options; but it was intended as a DIY thing from the beginning. I'd say most people who have one probably built it themselves.
>>
>>60808629
>>60808673
$170 is significantly cheaper than $230-$300. I'll definitely give it some thought, thanks for the advice.

Oh and one more thing, I've heard people complain about the thumb cluster placement (I remember reading about somebody doing a mod to lower it relative to the main board). If I have smaller hands, is it likely to be more comfortable or more problematic?
>>
>>60808680
NP, you can probably get a better price estimate if you just price out everything on the list from ergodox.io . I bet you could save some decent money if you went with chinkshit switches and caps. The case (~$50-70 probably) and PCB (~$25) will probably be your most expensive parts unless you can 3D print or laser cut your own case. Making your own PCB is possible too, but easier to fuck up than 3D printing--probably just plan to buy that if you get an ergodox.

If you have small hands, then moving the thumb cluster further away from the rest of the keys sounds like the wrong thing to do. Also, you wouldn't want to do something that prevented you from using the standard PCB.
>>
>>60808384
why did you use glue though? Doesn't the plate hold the switches properly?
>>
How are the "mainstream" keyboards, like Corsair? I can get K70 for $130.
>>
The TADA68 would be THE perfect keyboard if it had one more row for the F keys

debate me
>>
>>60809144
>Doesn't the plate hold the switches properly?
The problem is exactly that: switches are built for a 1.5mm plate, but 1.5mm acrylic is way too flimsy for a plate. That means you need to either use thicker acrylic and glue your switches, or maybe try to hack something together with a 1.5mm layer and a thicker support layer underneath (in which case, gluing the layers together would likely leave small imperfections and bubbles, making it look less good).

You could go without anchoring the switches down at all, but then you'd run the risk of breaking your circuitry when you try to pull off keycaps.

>>60809321
They're not bad, but $130 is quite expensive for a midgrange keyboard these days, with the abundance of decent-quality shit from china.
>>
>>60809382
I'm a full size user myself because I love the numpad, but removing the F keys loses you almost nothing--they're very infrequently used, so requiring you to press Fn+5 to reload a web page isn't a big deal.

The real inexcusable memeboards are 40%, where you need to hold down modifiers just to type numbers.
>>
>>60809413
the 5 row layout loses the dedicated Home and End keys and moves the ~ to a weird spot. There is literally no reason not to have the top row
>>
>>60808603
You get 1-2 more keys and honestly were you using all 6-7units of area on a standard one anyway?
>>
>>60809453
You know any good programmable keyboard lets you do ~ with shift+esc right
>>
>>60809453
I agree, but tons of people never use home and end, and rarely use ~. Not saying it's for me; I use home and end all the time. But if you're one of the people who don't then it shouldn't matter much.

Second, it's programmable, so you could easily replace tada68's page up/down with home and end, or put them on the Fn layer.

Sounds like you live in Brazil or something. I can't imagine it costing $50 to ship from China. Are you able to get rosewill keyboards where you are? They should be under $100 for something fullsize with backlighting, and will be similar quality to the corsair.
>>
Can you recommend me switches? Last I looked I think I thought cherry clear switches would be good, but now apparently there's a bunch of alternatives so I don't know.

Primary use will be programming, secondary - gaming. So I'd like something not too horribly tactile as to introduce a delay while playing games. But right now I'm typing on a shitty chiclet keyboard and I want a "proper" mechanical feel, so I'm not too keen on reds either. However, everything I know about switches comes from reading descriptions, so I have no idea how they'd actually hold up in real usage (as far as I know, it's actually trivial to get used to gaming with blacks, or something). Clicky or not is fine, I'll enjoy annoying everyone on skype/discord if it's loud.

an ibuypower kb with kailh blue switches
an k70 with cherry brown (feels linear but not as good, angry I got this meme)
and a cleaner matias which is my daily
it was originally a tactile (quiet click) but I modded the leafs to be clicky by removing the tactile leafs
also learned if I arch the back of the leaves I am guaranteed a clicky sound
I also angled the leaf to make it stiffer
I am currently very happy with it
>>
>>60812683
not yet
it's too early in it's development phase
it from the looks has a better key feel but bad key sound and quality control
It might have gotten better since the last batch of reviewers tried it out

have your switches failed? I owned this keyboard too, and my a key would stop working so I soldered a new switch then my d key started to stop working
>>
>>60814260
It's a good bit more complicated than PC assembly though.
>>
>>60814387
The only thing more complicated is having to solder the switches and/or leds. What a lot of people do is buy holtites for the pcb. This let's the switches be hotswappable, and in most cases you don't even have to apply solder since the holtites snap in to the pcb (just be sure to check pcb compatibility before you attempt this method)
>>
>>60814146
Because people buy topre regardless

Affordable 90%/tk/96key keyboards? Basically something like the cm qf tk. Happy to use taobao. I'll be putting in gateron browns.

Can't you literally make your own for like $5
With a 3D printer
Or a fucking knife or chisel or something if you're into that kind of shit

Then because you only made one you sell it as "rare" for $500?
Is this a new business model?

>Budget
up to 100

>Preferred switch type
unsure - do more gaming than writing atm but need it for work soon, would like to be able to switch different types

preferable German due to ä,ü,ö
>Form factor
prefered 75% or if needed tenkeyless/full
>Backlight
dimmable white LED
>Previous/current keyboards
shitty dell/hp rubber
>>
I've been using a Ducky keyboard since last year, and it's been doing stupid shit ever since I owned it.

If I hold down the Z or X keys too long, then a few key LEDs light up and when I try to hold down a button, say for gaming, instead of doing a continuous input, the key will stutter, and not in a steady pace as if it was "rapid firing," rather it's all fuckin random as shit.

Furthermore, when I hit the A or M keys, among several others, very often my keyboard will input the key more than once, at most five fucking times from one press.

So, if /mkg/ could help me, I'd like a mechanical keyboard in either red or blue switches, USB wired, preferably with no backlights, in either 80 percent, tenkeyless or full size, for under 60 dollars, that will last me three years or more without malfunction. Does /mkg/ have any recommendations?
>>
>>60816699
looks like a regular-ass filco
>>
>>60816882
Cherry shit is shit. They are designed to have basic keychatter issues like what you are describing, and no matter what cherry keyboard you buy it will always chatter. If you want better more durable switches get something capacitive
>>
>>60816699
Diatec Filco Majestouch (2?) in a KOBO Carbon White frame.

my spacebar is fucking up a lot, it like gets stuck on one end and i have to press it down real hard on the other side so it would fix

>>
>>60817103
just clean all the cum out from there. If that doesn't work use lube
>>
>>60817103
If it's a gaming keyboard just give it a quick spritz of mountain dew to refresh it.

Regular custom keycaps. Artisan keycap makers are the code baristas of the industry.
>>
>>60817438
Artisan keycaps are way cheaper then custom keycaps. A GMK set will run you 150 bucks, while an artisan one costs 10-15 bucks. There are ones that are made from CNC machines that cost triple the price, but those are still a lot cheaper, and will last longer then whatever ABS those dumb germans shit out.

Real talk, that's some weak shit. If you're going for the gaymer LRGBT aesthetic go big or go home. Full key by key underlighting like those pimped out street cars, seperate internal lighting for the characters, and a light strip around each island of keys.

Why do so many mechanical keyboards have the mini usb cable shit? whats the point just one more thing to break
>>
>>60820054
Detachable cables mean if the cable fails, you can just replace it. As for mini USB specifically, I think it's a combination of design inertia, micro USB cables breaking if you look at them funny and Type-C not being properly established yet.
