>How to assemble a PC, select components & more. (somewhat outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Build_a_PC

CPUs:
>G4560 - budget builds (<$500) unless G4600/G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>R5 1500x - generally all you need for 60fps with power to spare. No i5
>R5 1600 - best value for higher fps gaming & mixed usage; 1600x if you too lazy to OC
>i7-7700k - bad value but good for higher FPS; may have heat issues
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper/i9 - compute/Multitask/mixed use

Graphics:
>G4560 iGPU is fine for desktop stuff and very light game
>1050Ti for low budget. Drop settings if not Freesync/Gsync on newer games; RX560 if discounted <$90
>RX570 4GB - 1080p@60+hz, running most maxed; older games at 144+hz
>RX580 8GB - 1440p@60+hz, inject SMAA & drop settings
>1060 - Generally outperformed by the RX 580 and GSync costs more; consider if AMD is not an option (ie CUDA/miners buying all RX570s)
>1070 - if on heavy sale-ish
>1080 - 1080p@100-144+hz maxed; 1440p at lower hz.
>1080Ti - 1440p@90-144+hz; 4k@60hz in SOME games, more at lower settings

General:
>READ PRODUCT REVIEWS to see if that cheap SSD/PSU or whatever is reliable
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity/scratch disk/VMs
>Stop confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>mATX board + case is often cheaper
>1 SR DIMM is slower than 2 DIMMs

Ryzen 5 1600 or 1600X?

this will go with GTX 1060 3GB/6GB (need suggestion on which, alternatives are welcome too) since none of RX 470/480/570/580 are in stock and only god know when they will be restocked.
Motherboard will be B350.
Thanks!

Get the 6gb.
The 1060 3gb is not the same thing with just less ram.
1600X if you're not overclocking. 1600 if you're overclocking.
OR
1600X if you want a better chance at overclocking high.

One more thing, if you had to choose between
a GTX 1060 6GB

Which one would you go with?

I'm looking for a budget 1080p gaming build, going to be playing lightweight games like WoW and CSGO, I don't mind turning down settings, is this a good build? I read somewhere that it's a bad idea to pair an AMD GPU with a budget CPU, is this true?

>>
>>60775186
The 1600 comes with a cooler, is also unlocked and is $20 cheaper
Even if the clocks are lower, it's better value in my opinon. You have to shell out $40 more minimum for a 1600x (price difference + cooler)
>>
>>60775171
I'd the 1060. But if I was tight, and wanted a 1440/4k display in like six months and not in a place it's easy to sell second hand cards. I would stomach the 1050 play with settings dropped a bit till then.

>>60775275
Depends on what the VM is doing
Or if you see yourself using more of them in future. But I wouldn't a 1500. You're already dropping so much on it. It would feel stupid to have a four core. Also for resale value if you decide to curb your data hording ways and become a monk.

Posting again since thread changed. Maybe will get more interesting answers.

Hey guys, can you help with my budget upgrade? Right now I have very old PC, like 5+ years, since I got it, I only upgraded GPU. PC has old gigabyte motherboard with LGA775 slot and Intel q9550 quad processor, 750W power supply, 6gb DDR2 RAM and GTX 660 GPU with 3gb memory. So I want to buy new motherboard with new cpu and ddr4 ram. My budget is around 400-500 euros, and I want to spend ~250 euros on the CPU. My goal is to use PC for gaming, streaming and creating 3d modeling content. I'm deciding between Intel i5-7600k and Ryzen 5. On the one hand Intel is good and reliable, but on the other, Ryzen looks very promising. And if choosing between Ryzen 1600 and 1600x, I like 1600 more because it comes with a not bad CPU Cooler, since I have very shitty and old cooler which I will have to upgrade too. Which manufacturers are the best at making b350 motherboards and DDR4 RAM, also what frequency RAM I need for Ryzen? Thank you for help.
>>
>>60775603
Ryzen will be better for modeling and unless you're getting the 7700k ryzen will be on par with Intel as well. Either get the 1600 it's basicly the 1600x with a lower clock speed and a cooler. You can over clock it to get to the 1600x speed. I would also try to upgrade your gpu since 660 is heavily outdated. I would wait for rx570 or 580s to get back in stock because they are a good value. As for motherboards Asus and asrock make good boards. I would be careful with msi boards because they are known to have problems. Ddr4 2600 or 3000 will work fine for gaming how many gigs of ram you need is more how you personally take care of your pc such as how offer you restart or how many programs you leave open. If you restart regularly and don't keep more than 2-3 programs open at a time 8 gb will be fine otherwise get 16gb. Team dark ram is generally a good price for 16 gb 3000mhz for a little over 100 dollars.
>>
Anons, I have an old chap with 8320+8gb ram+ 280+1 TB HDD in it, I am planning on building a new pc with 1600x (since I really am not knowledgable in terms of OC and shit).
Can I turn my old pc into a server pc that can host my and my brothers online games such as DayZ, private MMO server etc?
And if I can, can I just use it as it is or should I add SSD, ram etc?
>>
>>60775707
I see, maybe I will buy just 8gb ram and, if needed, buy 8 more later. About GPU, yea its old but this 3gb memory can still kick ass, so im pretty sure for some time Ill be okay with it. My friend got gtx 560 and intel i7-7260 and can stream overwatch easily, so I believe in my old boy.

You mean Raven Ridge
There is going to be an A6, A8, A10, and A12 2 and 4 four versions with and without hyperthreading. From what I understand, the A10 is still going be be position against the Core i3 and the A6 is still going to be positioned against the Celeron/Pentium. I believe that the A12 might be priced above the Core i3 into Core i5 territory.

sup senpai, build my rig ~2 weeks ago, runs like a charm.

BUT

sometimes, and that happens like...once, maybe twice in 12 hours or so, there's a crackling sound. Now, it comes from the speakers and one might think "yeah ok, shitty speakers/cable, whatevs"
But when I lean down behind the computer, I can hear that crackling noise right there as well.
I have no idea what it could be - it can't be sparks flying, because a) I doubt that the pc would even work then and b) wouldn't that be a constant issue? I changed the extension thing the pc draws power from, maybe that'll help. Maybe a shitts insulation of one of the PSU cables, interference from that maybe?

Consider the Logitech G13, it's unbeatable for gaming in more comfortable positions like a couch or a bed, and it's still pretty great on a desk. An old Razer Orbweaver from when they still used Cerry MX Switches is also a good alternative.

Avoid the Blackwidow (unless you can find one with Cherry MX Switches), current Razer products have shit build quality.

the problem with amd cpus is theyre only cheaper because they don't include a gpu or a cpu cooler and the motherboards are more expensive. Plus you have to pay for more expensive ram since theyre heavily ram speed reliant

Chances are, if you're buying an X you're also buying a beefier cooler, so there's no point in increasing the price to add a cooler most customers will never use.

The major benefit with going AMD (other than not giving money to anti-consumer Intel) is that AMD doesn't replace their socket every two weeks, so you can keep the motherboard when you upgrade the CPU.

Hey nerds, I need help. Haven't built a desktop is 10 years or so. I've been using the same laptop for 5.5 years with minor upgrades along the way (i7-2860qm/16GB DDR3-1600/500gb and 1tb 850 EVO). About 6 months ago I got a mPCIe eGPU setup running with a RX 480. Everything was great until recently the system started to crash when waking from sleep (it's not a software problem).

Anyway, I need suggestions for a budget build. Mainly just the CPU and mobo; I can figure out the rest. I was going to just throw my laptop parts in a socket g2 mobo, but they cost over $200 so that seems like it would be a waste of money.

>>
>>60778627
>>60778664

What about the i3-7100? It's only $30 more, which isn't a big deal.

I don't really have a budget. I can spend whatever and regret it later, but I'd like to be around $400-500 for cpu, mobo, 16gb ram, case, and power supply. I already have the RX 480 and two SSDs.

I have two builds I want to get, one is with a RX 580 the other is with a GTX 1070. They both have a price of $1700. Which one should I get?

GTX 1070 build
https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/cD6jkT

RX 580 build
https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/3HQn4C

The 580 build has a top of the line cooler for the CPU as well as a 250 gb SSD. The 1070 build doesn't have these things.

Now clearly the 1070 build will perform better than the 580 build but it will cost a lot more to upgrade (adding cooler and ssd) and it won't perform well in the future vs the 580 with these things. The 580 build will perform better and is cheaper in the long run because all I have to do is get a good next gen GPU (ex Volta) and I'm set for a long time.

My monitor is 1440p @ 60hz which I already purchased, any thoughts on what build I should get? Pic related is the 580 build.
>>
>>60778760

I don't know enough about modern CPU options to hate anything, but if the i3 is better in any way (features?) then $30 more isn't much.

It's a bit higher than your budget, but I am of the opinion that you should spend a bit more and get a pc that will last a while, rather than a cheap build that will last a couple years at most.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/BHPkKZ

The SSD is to take advantage of the M.2 slot on the mobo. It's recommended, but not needed.

>>60778778
An SSD is a necessity in a modern pc. I would go with the 580 build, however you can save a bit by going with the 1600 instead of the 1600X. It's essentially the same chip, they perform the same at the same clock speed. It also comes with a cooler, so you don't need to get the Noctua now, but instead get that later when you want to overclock your cpu higher. Use that money for a better GPU now, or save it for Vega.

Ryzen is currently better than Intel at every pricepoint except for the i7 7700K, which beats its competitor, the R7 1700, in gaming. However, if you multitask a lot, the 1700 is better.

ALso note that the 1600 and the 1600X are essentially the same chip, the more expensive one is just binned higher and clocked higher out of the box. The 1600 also comes with a cooler, while the 1600X doesn't.

I want to set up a new computer because I recently started a new business, I would also like to use this computer for private use but it's very important that there is no virus or problems with my computer.
I would like to use an old computer I have from like 5 years ago, it has pirated windows on it (7 ultimate I think) and would like to put an official version of 10 on it, just standard home edition I think 64 bit too.
Which parts of the computer should I replace for maximum safety and so that I wont run into any problems because of the old pirate windows or possible virusses / scanners that came with it?
I read in the internet virusses or these kind of scanners / files could spread literally anywhere from HDD to GPU to Mobo to even internal memory of a mouse (I have one that saves settings on memory inside the mouse) to even monitor, I'm very confused.
Could someone please help me out? I would like to make no mistakes, it's very important everything works as if it would be new and completely safe, like I said I want to use this computer for doing banking and also for my new business and also for personal use.

>>60775276
You can use the backplate that comes with the AM4 mobo on a Cryorig H7 if you have a drill, sandpaper, and a knife.
>1. Remove the screws from the top, and take off the top mounting brackets.
>2. Using drill bits that get progressively larger, drill out the threading of the holes that are already there, up to an 11/64 bit size (if I recalll correctly). Check the fitment of the screws that come with the H7 cooler after each time you change the drill bit, you want it to be as tight of a fit as possible.
>3. Once done with the drilling, make sure you clean out the bracket.
>4. Take the four plastic spacers, and cut 0.1 inch off the end. Sand the end of the larger piece that you cut.
>5. Installation. Place the screws through the bottom of the bracket, and put the bracket's standoffs through the holes of the motherboard. Put the plastic spacers over the screws so as to hold them in place. Apply thermal paste, mount the cpu cooler, and tighten the screws (you may need two people for this).

Alright. Then you have valid point for getting one.
How I have understood is that OEM NVME SSDs from Samsung are rated at slightly lower speeds than retail ones.

Heat can be a problem for NVME SSDs, but some motherboards come with heatsinks that alleviate the issue a little bit. Just place some cheap heatsinks on the chips and try to get some airflow on the SSD and you should be perfectly fine.

do you have a videocard you can use in the interim?

If you do use that and buy the 580 if you're inclined. If you don't have severe brand loyalty the 1060 is basically equivalent but you have to deal with nvidia's driver xxxperience
>>
>>60781299
Nope building it from scratch.

What do you mean by xxxperience?
>>
>>60781322
to use shadowplay you have to create an nvidia account and register your driver software, which is kind of annoying and anti freedoms which /g/ hates quite a bit.
AMD has driver issues too but they've improved IMMENSELY over the couple years or so.

If you're set on getting the 580, get a used card for cheap since you won't be using it permanently and then replace it later. A used 480 would be fine, basically the same as a 580 but this mining craze is fucking the AMD market up hard, and you have to be careful not to buy an old mining card since those tend to be battered.

If you're happy with the used card then you can realistically wait for vega to release and make a decision then, or just buy a 1060 now. Really doesn't matter besides a few quirks to each GPU.

I have 6 RX 580s for mining and 2 more on the way. It's so easy to break even because you don't even have to make back the entire cost of the card, which takes 2 months. You can mine for 1 month and sell the card and still be profitable. It's sold out because of how ridiculously profitable it is.

Ethereum isn't even the most profitable coin to mine right now. And with GPUs (unlike ASICs), you can mine pretty much any coin you want (especially now that most coins use "ASIC resistant" algorithms), so if the most profitable coin goes down, you can just mine something else.
>>

Also the 290 runs really fucking hot so yes that's pretty normal. If you're feeling really ballsy you could reapply the thermal compound to the die but there's some major risks with fucking that up.
>>
Okay so someone give me the straight talk, do I need windows 10 to game for the lifespan of my new computer or can I stick to my familiar Windows 7?
>>
>>60783273
if you want to play DX12 only games yes

otherwise no you'll be fine. You won't get windows updates when they cut support but as long as you're savvy enough keep up with major vulnerabilities you'll be ok.

It's shit.
>i5 6500
Get R5 1600.
>Z170
For locked Intel, this is stupid. R5 1600 + AM4 B350.
>WD Blue
Toshiba P300 is better.
>Corsair CX 600W
It's shit. Get Seasonic G 550W.

Yeah now I know how to do everything, last question, I heard Enterprise and LTSB have problems with Nvidia drivers and gaming, should I get Pro version instead?
>>
this is unironically how they describe the EVGA supernova PCUs
>>
>>60783379
What problems? Any version of Windows that isn't Home is good.
>>
>>60783273
You can stick to windows 7 but you better have a PS/2 keyboard prior to installing USB 3.0/3.1 drivers or have the drivers in the windows 7 install ready.
>>
>>60783391
Look up some PSU reviews/descriptions, 'Japanese capacitors' is a thing.
>>
>>60783391
jap caps are nice. I use seasonic platinum instead of EVGA though.
>>
>>60783407
I reinstall my Windows 7 a lot and it works with USB without drivers. Did you go the full retard only 3.0 route or something.
>>
>>60783246
Return the mobo or get the i7 6700k.
>>
>>60783441
New hardware after Skylake throws a shit fit if you install windows 7 via usb 3.0. And for Ryzen you need to download the motherboard chipset from AMD to get 7 working.
>>
>>60783455
Exactly what I wrote.
Only retards don't get some backwards compatibility. Only meme boards don't have some 2.0 ports.
>>
>>60783443
I'd get an i7 6700k if I had the cash to nearly double my price range there. I think anyone looking at the build on here can tell two things, I don't know what I'm doing and that I don't have the kinda cash needed to buy the best quality parts.
I'm running with a crappy 200 buck laptop right now till I get this thing running, I'll worry about getting better, more cutting edge parts once I have a actual computer and I know more about what I am doing.
I guess I'm more concerned with, will it run and what kind of performance can I expect from it.

That wan't the point. The point was the use of the word Nippon

be quiet, whippersnapper, before I bend you over my knee.
>>
>>60783391
But Nippon is literally the name of the company that produces those caps
And the only reason why their name is highlighted like that was because their capacitors didn't suffer from the bursting epidemic of the early 2000s caused by poorly-reversed-engineered chemicals inside the things.
>>
>>60783559
Sell the mobo and switch over to a Ryzen.

Almost certainly, they won;t release something worse than 580 after all.

Nobody knows.

CPU: 1500x (No extra CPU cooler) - ONLY if you haven't actually bought the motherboard yet, because you can't use 1500X on that motherboard
Mobo: MSI B350M Bazooka
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 2x8gb 2400mhz
SSD: Optionally go for SU800 525GB if you want larger capacity, in case you have many games
GPU: 1060 GTX is fine, RX 580 is preferably, but it's out of stock and prices seem to be higher than they should
PSU: EVGA 500B should be good enough

>OS
Don't buy some expensive shitty overpriced OEM.
Search for windows 10 pro on allkeyshop, several stores sell for 5-6$, or go onto kinguin and find a key there.

That case looks pretty bad too, should get something like aerocool dead silence instead, if you get a mATX motherboard.
>>
Do you guys suggest Windows 10 over Windows 7/8? Given that Windows 7 is ez to acquire for free, is it the best option?

pls no >installgentoo
>>
>>60783559
Really just return the motherboard.
Ryzen r5 1500x + MSI B350M Bazooka, and no CPU cooler, and you're saving like 150$.

Your friend doesn't appear to be very good with computers... And then the other suggestions >>60783911 (Ram you have is fine.. Actually, I think maybe Sport LT kit has sky rocketed in price)
>>
>>60783955

Windows 10 is more annoying to shut down all the (((SPYWARE))) but vidya is going to start using DX12 at some point. If you don't care about DX12 and it blocking you from more modern games then by all means stick to 7
>>
>>60784078
>dx12
huh? I'm not the most computer literate. Is that a service pack?

So, get windows 7 for free now, buy windows 10 later I guess?
>>
>>60784106
If you have activated windows 7, I believe you can get an activated windows 10, by updating windows.

dx12 = directx 12, is an API for sound/graphics, that game engines use, which in turn game developers use to make their games.
>>
>>60784178
You can still upgrade to 10 for free?
I'll try it after I build my PC, I hope it doesn't bring me back to the activation screen..
>>
>>60783911
This is the kinda advice I was looking for thank you.
I've already picked the mother board up and I sent in the mail in rebate for it so I doubt I could return it at this point sadly same with the case. With the case is there something wrong with it and the parts I'm looking at, is it space issue or does the case just look bad because it's pink?
Will there be any compatability issues with your other recomended parts if I moved forward with the mother board I currently have? All the parts listed as bought are either already at my house or shipping at this very moment.
I never had to intent of paying full price for
windows to start with so no worries there.
>>60783960
She's by no means a pro or anything she built her own pc a few years ago and the build we are seeing is modified from hers. I know next to nothing so I figured I'd ask people who know a bit more before I grabbed the last few big parts.
>>
>>60784243
You might just want to sell the motherboard then, or look more if you can have it returned (even if there's a fee, like shipping).
Unless you've opened the motheboard box, there really shouldn't be a problem with returning it.

Otherwise, the build is fine (just not cost effective), except that you should skip that CPU cooler. Get something like Cryorig H7 at most.

Motherboards have sockets, and a cpu is made with a socket in mind.
The motherboard you have picked is socket 1151, only CPUs of socket 1151 will fit into it... Then there's some soft incompatibilities (needing update) with old "chipsets" and new intel CPUs, but no reason to go into that.

1500X is socket AM4, and so it won't fit into the socket of 1151. You'd need a AM4 motherboard, which MSI B350M Bazooka is.

The case is bad because it has bad airflow.
