So is this the Mac Pro replacement and Apple's just not going to have a standalone desktop now?

Starting at a low, low price of $4,999.

(you just get quad core Xeon with the lowest-spec, completely gimped Vega at that price though)

It's in a tiny iMac chassis.

There just isn't enough space in that chassis for proper cooling.

Current iMacs throttle like mad with laptop GPUs.

How do you think a full-pledged desktop Vega is going to do in that tiny "MUH THINNESS" chassis?
>>

Is this why AMD kept Vega under wraps for so long?
>>
>>60764455
They changed the thermals.

If you look behind it, they took out the RAM module and expanded the heatsink and fans.

I have a 2015 iMac fully loaded for FCPX and it doesn't have a throttling issue, although fans do kick it in at 100% CPU usage (which happens during exporting not all the time).

I check Intel Power Gadget and it's not throttling.

I know the 2014 had throttling issues.

It's for studios without much space. Every production house I've worked in has rented gay ass Leltel systems and no user ever touches the insides, the IT just swaps out with a new one if there's a problem.

So AIOs are great for studios, especially production houses.
>>

And will be glorious.

Why? They always adopt open standards, see VESAs Adaptive Sync. You've mistaken them for NVIDIA.
>>

Did you even see the heatsink size in OP?

The back of the iMac is fat, so it's probably a super deep heatsink.

I used to have a 12 core Mac Pro (the cheese-grater ones) and they ran really cool and the heatsinks were massive. I even took it apart to upgrade the Xeons from ones I bought on eBay.

I imagine it's a combination of stopgap until proper Mac Pros next year. And trying stuff out for the iMac line ... think of like how Tesla did a sports car first. They intentionally came out with a smaller market product so they can deal with issues on a smaller scale and provide better service before releasing to a wider market.

Umm most architecture and design work is done on PCs.
>>
>>60765171
That's always been how Apple functioned.

They made the iPhone first instead of the iPad because it's easier to go from small to big than big to small.

I don't see how /g/ always hates on Apple when in fact they're doing everything right.

Kek you clearly have no idea how the industry works.

Major Hollywood movies have different phases. Post production involves Editorial, VFX, Color, etc.

Most editorial is done on Macs. VFX mostly on Winshit/Lelnux (by using Nuke as a compositor). Colorists use Davinci Resolve mostly, which usually run on Macs.

So you're a retard.

Ok, I'll give you that. It's still a really really small niche. You can plug that hardware in a really small mini-ITX case or something.
>>
>>60768057
Are you implying real work is usually done on Macs?
>>
>>60768067
>all you know are the specs and price
>LOL XDDD IT OVERHEATS AND THROTTLES ROFL
You're a fucking retard.
>>
>>60768094
>mactoddler unironically trying to imply macshit doesnt overheat

2 rupees have been deposited in your designated shitting street Panjeet.
>>

>>60768091
Most of my department relies on macs. Mainly because macOS = Unix + Proprietary shit, which is important in my field. The rest uses some Linux. Nobody fucking uses Windows here and whenever somebody shows up with a Windows machine, they're usually gamer neckbeards who think they know shit, but really only know how to install the crack for the latest CoD shit show by replacing some dll or something like that.
>>
>>60768122
I never implied shit, I said you can't say it overheats and throttles when you don't know if it fucking overheats and throttles or not.
>>
>>60768234
>The rest uses some Linux
That's totally OK. But why do they need Macs when you can just use Linux?

I'm skeptical because where I work, the whole infrastructure is Windows, but the retard higher-ups decided it was appropriate for them to have Macs to differentiate themselves from the plebs (the higher-ups only do email on their computers by the way). It was a huge shitstorm for the IT department because they were not ready for that kind of support and in a few months all the Macs were gone. It was hilarious.
>>
>>60768230
Beautiful.
>>
>>60768230
>that fucking bezel
Holy shit, I thought macs were supposed to be good looking?
>>
>>60768230
dat bezel
>>
>>60764996
You don't take the back off on an imac, you remove the screen.
I did this once, and completely fucked the connector.
Fuck imacs.
>>
>>60764843
They already tried this and it failed miserably... it was called DockPort
>>
>>60768304
>I'm an oaf so fuck iMacs
I can't tell you how many times I've had mine cracked open and I've never had an issue.
>>
>>60768230
Holy fuck, did they recycle 2008 era panels?
>>
>>60764393
there's no apple product that doesn't throttle like a motherfucker

>>
>>60768325
Why wouldn't I just opt for something that's easier to modify?
>>
>>60768346
Because you're not an oaf. Oh wait, nevermind.
>>
>>60768277
Where I work, I gave all the higher ups Macs (which they loved, because it gave them status and they were allowed to install whatever they wanted)

Then they promoted me.

Then I fired all the dumb Windows admins who couldn't operate a Bash shell. Company's running great.
>>
>>60768122
Perhaps you tried to say "Intel shit"
>>
>>60768230
thicc
>>
>>60768358
I'm sorry, I don't want to have to fix a connector with at least 30 pins(this was 4+ years ago) AFAIK, every time I allow my screen to fall slightly too far when opening that mess up.
>>
>>60768342
5k or not, that shit is fucking ugly, my dude.

Also, that thing better be professional quality and color calibrated, or they're literally retarded.
>>
>>60768391
Looks pretty good to me, it's just a black iMac
>>
>>60768407
It looks like they forgot about black on glass bezel.
>>
>>60768277
Some people need/want stuff like office or adobe or whatever. I'm mainly in the mac boat because of adobe cc, which I really don't want to miss out on. Gimp and Inkscape are just laughable alternatives.
>>
>>60768390
Wouldn't be an issue if you weren't an oaf.
>>
>>60768426
nevermind i suck cocks

But then you have to deal with spaghetti cords. Manageable, sure, but annoying and space-eating nonetheless.

With an iMac and bluetooth mouse + KB, you need just a single cord. That has a certain appeal.

Actually at the extremely high end of graphics and post-production Linux tends to be used, specifically RHEL.

Examples: Pixar, Industrial Light & Magic, Disney

imac+wired keyboard is nice (because the original jewtooth one was too small and a shit angle)

my sff pc is similar though, only cords near it are power and hdmi to my tv, then it has one of those keyboard/trackpad media centre things

my work tower is a fucking rats nest though, too many usb cables and then a video capture card with component input

what is this, 2005? no one wants that shit anymore except computer labs who are given blanks checks to blow on "art equipment"

if you want a powerful AIO get a small desk unit or a workstation laptop. building everything into a meme unibody screen offers no advantage at all.
