I'm helping my boss hire an assistant designer/illustrator and looking through portfolios, I can instantly tell when someone is using Gimp.

I'd never use Photoshop by itself; it's good for rendering (and animation if you're really stubborn) but it's a resource hog and its pen tracking kinda sucks.

Krita is nice. I don't have anything bad to say about it. But CSP is just way nicer. Better pen tracking, color blending is really nice, it's lightweight but extremely capable. It's got nice tools if you specialize in comics or animation, too. My only gripe is that editing vectors is weird with it (and you can't export said vectors) but other than that it's so lovely.

Krita is a very good painting tool, but not a very good photo editing tool.
GIMP has a godawful UI (it's not like PS is super ergonomic, but it's light years ahead)

Also, raw development tools in PS/LR are just plain better than anything I've seen from FOSS so far.
