Why aren't you using Windows Server 2012 R2 as OS, /g/?

>server tier performance
>no bloatware
>no cortana botnet
>supports up to 4 TB of internal memory
>up to 64 10-core processors = 640 cores
>stability that makes Linux users question their faith
>desktop is default interface
>boots way faster than any other windows
>can convert to domain controller for fun
>can add IIS and have corporate grade web server for tinkering
>>
>>60737636
2008R2 is better

>I wouldn't be able to install my fav. backup application (I'd need a server license)

I very much like Win 10 Ent

Yeah but its expensive. I like it but the free enterprise trial lasts 6 months.
>>
I know it's bait, but let's use this opportunity for some autismal trivia

>supports up to 4 TB of internal memory

16TB, regardless of release its all the same kernel. the limit is a registry toggle:

https://github.com/vyvojar/policies/blob/master/memlimit.reg#L6

also instead of normie bloat, you get all the server bloat you don't need instead. just install ent, and gut cortana etc
>>
>>60738175
What is server core?
>>
>>60737636
I got a Server 2016 Standard License.
Should I switch from Win 10 Enterprise to Server 2016?

Is there some software that I won't be able to use anymore?

Still no SSH. Still have GUI for terminal.
>>
>>60737636
Linux is vastly better. Even more so if you want to run TBs worth of RAM and over 9000 cores.

> IIS, "domain controller" being anything special requiring special editions of Windows, desktop gooey required to not have to deal with a horribly poorly made MS CLI and other MS bullshit
No thanks.
>>
>>60738194
bloated because it comes with a fucking win32 subsystem
and it still has a gui
>>
>>60737636
I bet it has TCP tweaks in the registry that are good for server traffic but bad for performance, has bad multimedia settings ('safe' values) etc, it's just not good using it as a workstation.
>>
>>60738269
>tweaks in the registry
is that still a thing with windows ?
and, it already comes with a fucking GUI, i'd expect there'd be a configuration manager for all those tweaks
>>
Now this is autism
>>
>>60738292
There is, gpedit. Obviously tweaks regarding artificial restrictions and general MS bullshit are well hidden from user - same way there is not "shut up, cortana" button, you need to prod the system a bit to obey.

Of course linux is superior in every way, except playing vidya.
>>
>>60737636
>stability that makes Linux users question their faith
Not at all. Even if you finally had some edition of Windows that is stable while powered (or even robust under various workloads), Linux already had that in production for around a decade and everything big / expensive / important was and is just fine relying on Linux.

Its sure possible that one version of Windows also is fine, but why risk more instability to use a shittier OS with shittier server software and pay for it?
>>
>>60738360

I suppose next in line would be mentioning TCO. Aww, we should definitely revive windows vs linux generals.
>>
>>60737636
does it finally support pcie passthrough to VM clients ?
or installing drivers without having to reboot ?
>>
>>60738292
With Server 2008 you had to change some reg values to set the audio priority (?) back to regular values for the multimedia class scheduler service, and TCP hardening values came with Win 2000 and were different between wks and srv.

Most are simple though like enabling video and audio acceleration with dxdiag.
>>
>>60738216
What happens if I close that window?
System logs out?
>>
>>60738537
no, hibernate to save power because you obviously don't need to use it anymore
>>
>>60738553
And when it returns from hibernation it reopens a cmd?

if promoing a dc is fun for you then you should probably kill yourself

nope, it starts downloading updates

I use WHS 2011 (Based on 2008r2) as my server os cause it werks and sable as hell. You can install av on it (I run Security Essentials on both server & clients). Also runs iis and ca,has dnla support (i use Serviio cause of broader format support). Can also act as dhcp & dns cache server + wsus server (i let my router handle dhcp/dns. i get the monthly security rollups offline)
FYI: Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate x64 supports up to 192gb of ram
>>
>>60738712
It's an artificial limit >>60738192
>>
>>60737636
Ok anon I will get it
>>
>>60738712
16TB for x64, and 128GB for x86-PAE (though on PAE there are occasionaly problems with io mapping), all editions since win7.

Winfags truly are cucked. Arbitrary limits of editions on the level "windows starter edition won't allow you run more than 1 program at a time", and on the occasion MS benevolently removes the restriction in part, they taunt it as some sort of advantage.

On the other hand, it's probably true that using 16TB with x64 windows would be a waste of perfectly good supercomputer.
>>
>>60737636
Does it have the latest directx?
>>
>>60738863
It's modified 8.1. So no.
>>
>>60738696
This. Fucking this.
That's the reason. A fucking "server tier" performance
>>
>>60738874
well if it weren't for vidya i would not even use windows so.......
>>
>>60738186
>Yeah but its expensive. I like it but the free enterprise trial lasts 6 months.

I use Server 2012 R2 trial with all relevant Windows updates slipstreamed.

Every 180 days I just reformat/reinstall. No kmspico botnet necessary.

I tried Server 2016 but it bluescreened when I tried to play Starcraft 2 and is a bloated pos, never leaving Server 2012 again.
>>
>>60738383
Then you generally end up with Windiws costing less with a Windows only admin and Linux cheaper for almost everything else, especially the modern elastic cloud deployments that companies ideally want.
>>
>>60737636
Still has forced updates, just at a lower frequency.
>>
>>60739558
It's not based on 10. No forced updates. You're thinking 2016. Probably.
>>
>>60739159
You can just rearm using slmgr 5 times, 5x60 days more.
