I'm attempting to build a cheaper alternative to those prebuilt hard drive enclosures (that run 100$ for 4 fucking drives) that I can connect directly to my computer using USB or ethernet. The idea being that I can connect a raid array's data to my main computer and not construct a fully functional NAS and thus save on cash as I'm not buying a full computer, rather just space and power for some hard drives.
As far as I can tell I'll need
>hard drives
>case to hold them
>PSU to connect power to hard drive
>raid controller?
If anyone here has done something similar I would love some input.

I was looking into getting a 4 hard drive USB dock a few months back and was surprised at the ridiculous prices, so I'm also interested in this.

Norco offers 16 and 24 drive racks that would be positively amazing if they weren't 650$ and 400$ respectively.

Possibly put a kit together on mass-drop like they o with keyboards

I'm not familiar with this, could you explain?

>I dont know the difference between NAS and DAS
>I dont know what a SAS expander is

Its a website for mass buys which are where a group of people organize buying either component kits or complete things and since they are buying in bulk you can get better prices.

>I didn't read op
NAS and DAS both require an entire independent computer, which OP is obviously trying to avoid by assembling only case, storage, and power.

Buy a cheap computer for $50 and put your drives in it. or get a used n40l
It's going to pull more power and it'll be an eyesore, if you dont like it buy the prebuilt one.
That's leleleliterally your options.

>I dont know the difference either

looks like they are trying to make a DAS enclosure without shelling out for a prebuilt
Buy an external SCSI/SAS enclosure, they're perfect for direct attach storage units.
It's literally just a box with a PSU and 5.25" bays that you can jam whatever you want in.

the issue of course being that those enclosures run upwards of 230$ for 4 drive bays

I really hope they make AMD based version of those again.

This + 16 core + 2 more dimm slots + raid 5
