Is i3wm a meme? I feel like such a l33t hack3r wannabe whenever

Just started using it and enjoy it a lot.

I mean it's fun but it has its downfalls. Sometimes it's helpful to have a modern style desktop environment but the easy tiling i3 has can be beneficial, too.

If you enjoy it then you should use it, that's what is important. Don't listen to biased idiots on the internet and do what you think is best.

I personally love the tiling, very light weight too. And Im for the most part a normy.

I dig it. I'm kind of a Linux noob, so I have to reconfigure my hotkeys each boot, but it's worth it. I'm running a Thinkpad X61, so every possible performance saving, within reason, is worthwhile. May try Arch, at some point. Maybe.

Geez, and I thought toggling floating mode every time I booted with dwm was annoying.

I dropped bspwm for gnome about a week ago because I was worried that I was missing out on all the features of a modern DE by using some tiling WM instead.
But not being able to tile / manage workspaces properly was so jarring that I'm back on bspwm now.
Why can't there be a good tiling DE? Not all of us are arch ricers that like spending weekends building every little thing.
