If you took away subsidies, people would stop working for less than liveable wages. The literal only reason why companies continue to underpay people, is because people are willing to work for those wages (because the rest is covered through welfare). All tax is theft to be quite honest, but I don't see why personal income beyond comfortable means should be necessary for anyone.
