I must say I am in two minds over this.

One it would be pretty good to have these robots going around, they use many of the same technologies that would be put into self driving cars so as a test bed for safety and reliability they would be pretty decent.

My mother used to work at a restaurant and before they tried a tip collection and redistribution there. (Since then its keep your own tips now for good reason)

Guess what happened? Yep. It was madness incarnate. First disputes happened because the chefs got tip money and they got paid much more anyway, so it caused a fued between chefs and serving staff. Chefs eventually bit the bullet once the manager stepped in.

Then afterwards fueds broke out between serving staff since everyone got an even split of it, including the people who only work part-time.

Then people kept stealing the tip money pools, or just keeping some of their own tips here and there on the sly, defeating the point of it.

The only two ways it works, is you either have a % service charge thats divides itself into wages evenly, (but customers hate that), or you just keep your own tips you earn flat-out, sods law if you dont get any.

Localised courier services in our area do a pretty reliable job. (Southeast England)

They go pick up the stuff and deliver it in bulk to their area. Usually the same 2 or 3 guys I see deliver my stuff.

Courier services get bad rep mostly because of the companies running them being shitty. Independents I find, are fine. They work for themselves, so they dont fuck around getting the deliveries in because they are self-employed. I dont think delivery drones will be able to outdo them, like a driving bot using satnav wouldnt be more efficient than a london cabbie at getting people about London. Amazon and MyHermes license work out to independents in my area and I usually have no issue getting my orders in.

Its shitty companies like Yodel that fuck it up the fuckers working there rob shit and lie about when they "attempt" to deliver things.

I ordered a laptop once from Tesco that was delivered by them. First attempt, the laptop went "missing in transit". Second attempt, the laptop I got was broken. Third time I got lucky. Thats a lot of wasted time in my behalf and expense at Tesco's behalf. (This laptop cost £700. Quite high end for the time)

They get paid really shitty wages, dont get monitored often enough, and their working conditions are rough. Probably rougher than Amazon warehouses, (hard that is to believe). So it brings the worst out of people, and they probably hire the worst people too: people with nothing to lose and not much to gain.

I expect companies like that to go all in on drones in the future, (amazon are doing it as R&D but like their london service its going to be area limited) but I suspect people will switch to the companies offering human couriers just as much despite the evntual price difference. Much like people still go get served by people over serving themselves at a supermarket. People like that trust the worker to do their job properly and know ususally its more accurate and reliable.
