If media consumption isn't a priority, then I've heard only good things. My concern is the screen, because one reviewer said it wasn't that bright in daylight, but at the same time others fail to mention it, so I'm not sure.

I also wish the navigation buttons weren't capacitive. Seems like a mistake not to make them part of the screen, since you'd be able to hide them and wouldn't accidently touch them while scrolling on the keyboard.

i got the apps from apkmirror, but I believe it's possible to just install them directly from the appcenter. you should do this on a clean flash without previous gapps installed. this is the order I used and I haven't had any problems whatsoever with gapps.

any reason you're trying with 6.0? if you don't get twrp working, i'd do a full reflash of the rom and start over from the beginning. i did everything in this order:

1) unlocked bootloader (you've already done this, so no need to do again)
2) flashed the rom (full flash from miflash)
3) flashed twrp
4) installed root from twrp
5) put the gapps apks on the sdcard and installed them in the correct order

that's it. a full clean install of the entire system. then you're ready to start messing around for real. you can uninstall/freeze almost all of the chinese apps, and you probably want to do that.

i also booted up the phone between each step to see that everything was fine.

Google maps just werks even without the Google play services surprisingly
Other than that if you're really interested you can also run Google play services and Google play store if you're really want it but I wouldn't recommend it as it does cut your battery life in half

I tried 6 out of desperation at 2am lol. I couldn't get gapps to run at all and everything I read wouldn't work. Of course, every thing I googled gave me a zukfans link and the site wouldn't load.

Tonight I will try flashing with 7 and installing gapps in that order. I guess I don't need the open gapps zip to install from TWRP then? That's how I tried installing it the first time and it wouldn't let me use anything. It wouldnt even let me create a Google account on the phone, it would white screen for a second then go back to whatever screen I was on at the time.

Not sure when I'll be home, probably around 7est. Going to try all this around then just in case you're curious how I make out with it.

It's pretty nice, works well as a general purpose device. The sAMOLED screen is great to watch stuff on in the couch, and built-in speakers are surprisingly not god-awful. They're not particularly great either, but good enough to be usable which is more than I can personally say for most other mobile devices.

It'll never fully replace my laptop for productivity, but as far as leisure goes it does everything I'd otherwise use my laptop for, while being better at a lot of it, namely things like reading books/comics and watching movies or TV shows or chinese cartoons. The 4:3 screen is GOAT for webbrowsing also.

Overall 8/10 comfy tablet, would recommend.

The only problem with the android version is you cant send pictures or videos which can be solved by sideloading a companion app called WAA fixer which lets you send pictures. Video sending doesnt work yet though
