Gaming on Linux is still a joke. Sure, there are a few hundred games that will run in Linux, but they're mostly garbage, or run like garbage. It's like people that claim to have doom running on a fridge: it starts, and doesn't end unintentionally, but the experience is awful and far from enjoyable outside of the novelty of it.

The contrarian spergs will deny it, but even they know I'm right on this.
>>
Check out /vr/ you can play tons old games on Linux with emulators.
>>
Linux will never succeed on desktop until Johnny dipshit can go into the store with his mom, buy any software, install it, and have it justwerk(tm) . (yes, BUY software you greasy neet)
Same with downloading installers. It literally can't be any more than download>install>run
>>
>>60679122
Yes, Linux has games. But using Linux as a gaming platform is simply retarded, 'cause the limited number of titles available for it.

If you want to game, you use Windows, and that's it.
>>
>>60680607
>Same with downloading installers. It literally can't be any more than download>install>run

Have you opened Steam on Linux lately? Sure a lot of the available stuff is indie games, but there really are a lot of them supported on Linux now. Even Rocket League works on Linux.

Nearly half of my Steam library is available on Linux. It's kind of insane desu. Way more games than just a couple of years ago.
>>
>>60680642
And beyond that, most installable Linux software is going to be packaged for your distro's package manager or will have an install.sh or run.sh. Not exactly complex, in most cases you can double click the same way you run in windows.

It's harder to install software on a mac you dunces.

CSGO ran better on linux than on windows for me while playing with bots, while online the FPS counter also showed higher FPS but it felt like 40fps, can't explain. Lots of potential in linux but lack of enough games and adobe software hold it back significantly, that and the inconsistencies in making your own thing, certain things don't communicate well with others and having to spend hours making everything fit together nicely is annoying as hell.

I mean lets get real for a moment. You install windows 10 in about 45 minutes and for most linuxes its about the same but remember. Biggest base linuxes are about 1 gigabytes or 2 while windows 10 can be more than 5 gigabytes of data. And what happens when you open them. On linux there are about 2 functional buttons, 3 are nonfunctional and in those two buttons there are some pictures to play with. Maybe slide down or up. On windows though, you feel like a god. Its professional its fast, its all functional. You have a godlike user interface. The thing that linux does not have. You have those two buttons in linux, but you still search google for codes to write in terminal. Linux is free because its not worth a penny. Nobody would sell a paper without taking the money. Just not sure why people still buy android while windows phone does 10 times more. Trust me. When you work with windows you know some genius ground breaker dedicated himself to give you an operational os

You don't if you have an integrated GPU. Any Intel i3/5/7 will work and most newer AMD CPUs. What you need are 2 monitors, 2 keyboards and 2 mice.

>>60684617
>will play Windows 9x games more reliably than Windows will.
No, it won't. Wine has less than 70% native performance and doesn't work as well in incompatible games. For example, any unreal engine 2 wine port has shit performance.

>>60686729
AMD has shit drivers because they abandoned linux support for almost all their older (pre 2016) GPUs. Open source drivers are decent but definitely not as good so if you game you should choose nVidia or be a good goy and buy the latest AMD cards.
NVidia has amazing drivers which perform the same as they would on windows, but the community open source drivers are terrible (which is what you get by default). That's one of the reasons Linux gets hate, people don't know how to install drivers on their machine.

Ubuntu does mean Linux, what you're trying to say is Linux doesn't mean Ubuntu. Anyway, steamOS was debian based wasn't it? Thing is Ubuntu and SteamOS ship with necessary dependencies for most games, which can't be said for most other distros. But if you install them manually you can game on any debian based distro.
Even on Ubuntu you still need to install wine to get some "linux games" to work because most of them are a wine emulated mess. For example, install Terraria from GOG on Ubuntu which is "supported" and you either won't be able to launch it or won't have sound until you install wine.

This pasta is relevant to the thread:

Not him but the no games argument is not true anymore. Windows is the best os for gaming mostly due to most game developers are trained into developing for it with microsoft's closed APIs, so the simple process of porting a game that was developed for windows to any other platform will affect negatively the performance of the game. This with the fact that the marketshare is small compared to windows there's hardly an incentive at the moment to optimize for linux, making look as if the platform were worse for games than windows when in fact to flip the situation you'll need to change the idiosyncrasies on the industry itself.

The fact though is that the situation on linux is not nearly the same than two years ago and now those who prefer linux over windows now can play games on it, helping to break the vicious circle, but still there's a lot of things to do for linux to compete in the gaming side. I anyone wants for this to change i recommend to play the games you can on linux when possible and ask for linux ports.

I notice some people doesn't want's for this to happen but if that the case let me ask (not directed specifically to the person i'm replying): how are any of you benefited in a meaningful way with the current situation? because i consider that keeping the statu quo just to have a tool to win an argument on what OS is better is not a meaningful thing. how having less options and practically being locked to MS products benefits you?

I really want to join on the Linux bandwagon, but I'm not gonna install Wine just so I can try and play games that already works on windows. It should either work on Ubantu immediately or I'm gonna stick with Windows

But most emulators require fast single threaded CPU... buying a PS3 used is a better use of money IMO. Or an X360.

(It's like 100$, then all the games are free, you just copy them over with FTP and play.)
