Anti-viruses are the viruses

Operating systems and browsers have become alot better security wise that there is no reason to have one unless your an idiot. AVs have to be intrusive just to be competitive also it doesn't help that alot of AVs actually disable some security features of the OS and replaces it with there own
Linux doesn't have this problem

they're not pleb friendly, and require you to actually work your brains and read through documentation. It requires time to build up *nix knowledge and train your CLI chops.
On the bright side once the above hurdles are cleared much of the software you install, be it for number crunching or text parsing or even network and Internet scavenging, all of it and much more you can implement using gnu coreutils and wget/curl, not a claim here, it is from experience.
So is it worth it? Definitely, I can't stand not having some sort of *nix environment at my finger tips, hell if a cataclysmic disaster hits and I have access to any kind of computing device, the first thing I'd do is implement a *nix environment with a file interface, pipes and all the whistles that go with it.

even in 2007 norton destabilized the kernel of windows and was known to cause problems if you tried to unistall it for some users
some viruses corrupt system 32 files and if you remove the virus it trips some glitches
