what's the best FOSS alternative to Google Maps on android? i have shit direction and need a GPS app to get around, but are any as good as GM, or don't depend on its API?
and if you want to be free as in freedom, is ride sharing applications even possible?

Better than GM. Maps can be offline. Public transport, points of interest, etc. Navigation.
Maps.Me is better than Osmand, it's open source, but there have been some controversies regarding cause the name is trademarked or something

Osmand is more full featured than maps.me imo: better queries, plugins, wiki articles, etc. I can see someone argue that maps.me is more refined/sleek, but I wouldn't say it's better. What makes it better?

I take you don't use GPS to drive.

can either of these be used with apps like Lyft/Uber?

I drive Uber and you don't want to fuck around with that. Getting lost sucks, it could get you reported and eventually deactivated. Also Uber has navigation now, and if you cared about privacy you wouldn't drive uber.

just use google maps what is your fucking problem?

i use Lyft, but i'd change if necessary desu.
anyway i know both are shit for privacy, but while existence without google maps is possible, you never know when you might need a ride share.

fuck off Jew.

Maps.Me is not on fdroid. I used to use it for a while (even paid monies for the full version) but OsmAnd is a lot more versatile and can be better tailored to your preferences.
Maps.Me's maps were better-looking back when I was still using it.

As driver or rider? As rider it could work, but the biggest feature of GMaps and Waze is that they adjust the route using real time traffic data, without that you're only relying on a dumb map to plan a route, which may intentionally make you pay a higher fare. It's incredibly useful in shitty cites full of traffic.

Second this, OSMAND is pretty gud.

yeah, i should have clarified, i'd be using them as a rider. last time i deGoogled my phone i could install Lyft without all the Jewgle shit, but it was incredibly buggy and sometimes refused to work without the google play store installed.

Have you tried libreTaxi?

nope, but i'm looking into it right now. the cash only thing is disappointing though, because i rarely ever carry cash. but once bitcoin is implemented, i could see myself using this completely. at least for as long as i live in a major city anyway.
