I've been overclocking my i5 3570K for the better part of the day now. I've got it at 1.240v running at 4.4 Ghz. I'm happy with everything other than the temperature. Prime 95 takes it up to 81C during the Small FFT's test which is relatively OK, but the issue is at idle it sits at 46-48C which I feel is too high, though many say that's fine for an Ivybridge processor. Will the CPU be fine at this kind of idle temperature or is it something I should work to bring down?
Using a Hyper 212 EVO.
Your idle temperature is fine you donkey.

So there's no chance it'll degrade at that temperature? I know Intel sets their maximum temperatures pretty high for this chip, but maybe I'm just being paranoid.
Bump 4 tempz

You are ok, don't worry, in real life use is basically impossible to reach prime95 temperatures.
I prefer aida64. I wouldn't be concerned,
My cpu is constantly working at 50 degrees celcius and it's been fine for the past years.
Processors can withstand higher temperatures than advertised. What fucks up cpus usually is the voltage more than high temperatures.

Ok thanks for the tip, I guess I'll leave it as it is, the temperature seems to have slowly dropped throughout the day too, when I first OC'd I got around 49/50C at idle, now it hangs around 46/47. Hopefully it's due to the thermal paste settling as I only put it on yesterday.

yeah it usually takes some hours for the paste. just remember don't apply too much or too little,

ok thanks for the help

my ivy bridge macbook has been idling at higher temps for years now and hasn't yet cooked itself
shit's fine senpai

My i7-3770k at 4.6ghz idles at 25°C, or 35 in summer, 1.325V
soon to be i5 6600k & be quiet pure rock
how does 4.2GHz at probably 1.3v sound?

offset clock it with c states on, then run balanced power plan. I idle at .888v, 35c max. load temp seems about right. This is a locked ivy with an old 212 with gaps between heatpipes
Delid and your problem will be gone.

You could behave like an adult and not overclock your CPU unless you *really* need to.
