As someone who was doing anti-malware back in those days, it was just a massive pain to make a good rootkit or worm for the PowerPC architecture.

Now it's fairly simple to port malware too, they're sufficiently similar that the only thing that has to be re-engineering is top-level deployment, so supposing you're deploying in JS execution or something like that you can have one malware for both OSes.
