Anyone have Linux installed on a chromebook? Is it worth buying a chromebook for school and putting linux on it?

Done it
The thing has shit build quality but Linux runs pretty well not sure if any of the newer ones would be even decent with the current architecture and SSD size

Some hacker installed Gallium on my chromebook using a tool called crouton.
all chromebooks have linux installed OP

toshiba chromebook 2 (it was the cheapest one with an x86-64 cpu and a nice 1080p screen) running manjaro. i use it daily and rarely have performance issues, but sound was a bitch to get working.
if you don't mind a debian-based distro then galliumos is a good one to go for as it has the correct keyboard layouts and sound fixes etc built in.
you may need to flash some or all of the firmware in order to boot from usb or sd in order to install a new os. you can do that with this https://johnlewis.ie/custom-chromebook-firmware/rom-download/

We don't take kindly to yer folks around this place stranger

by hacker they mean a talentless hack
I wouldn't mind buying a chromebook if I could install debian on it, pure debian, not some crouton developer mode guest OS hack.
I want to make this boot to debian without the added peril of accidentally fucking my computer by pressing space at startup.
I just want a thin 12 hour battery laptop for programming outside.

it's not even running on the metal if he used crouton, it's just a chroot jail
read >>60603978 and do it properly

I bought a used c720 with 4gb ram. Put a larger ssd, and windows 10 on it and its perfect for school. If i lose or break it its cheap enough to be disposable. And its small and light enough to carry daily to class.
