Got a job at a Security Operations Center as an Analyst and I'm spooked that I might be under-qualified. I've messed with Kali and know enough to probably have my Security+, but my programming skills are quite plebby and I could probably benefit from studying networking a lot more. I really don't know my way around Linux aside from looking stuff up.
Am I fucked, or will they train me as much as I'm being led to believe? Any tips in general for an entry level sec job?

Are you in a Fed job or non-Fed?

non

Any idea what they'll have you monitoring? .pcap? Flow logs? HIDS/WIDS/NIDS logs? Something else?

Nope, not sure. The guy that hired me liked me a lot and I got on with the others pretty well and they know that I have a propensity for self-learning and a massive interest in the field, so I'm thinking that might just be why I got it. I don't even have a degree (though I've been to school). I learn very quickly, I'm just not sure if I'm being paranoid or if the general expectation of something like this is higher than where I currently am.

Learn grep.

Will do. Planning on brushing up on linux in general before I start

I hate you already for stumbling blindly into a job you don't deserve.

It wasn't blind or the result of stumbling at all, friendo. Very lucky, sure, but it's what I wanted -- I just didn't think I'd land it for a few more years.
>>60573775
Well in that case congratulations and I wish you luck in your new endeavor :)

It's easier than you might think mate. I did the same thing. Mine's easier, admittedly - service desk and T1 and 2 internal support for tertiary education, but I knew fuck all about AD, systems management, networking, anything like that. I got hired because I was friendly and the interviewers liked that I placed a priority on helping the people who called. They didn't care that I knew fuck-all, because that meant they could train me without me having any bad habits.

Thanks mang

That's pretty much what my current job is. Just hoping I don't crash and burn here since it's probably a bit more sophisticated, this thread is probably just the result of my nerves. I learned AD and a bunch of other systems with zero prior knowledge and basically no help, so with some luck I'll have a similar experience with this position.

It's EZ, dude. I'm on YouTube, Facebook and 4chan for like 90% of my day, and nobody fucking cares. My boss has straight-up called me out on it during a team meeting before joking that I was 'probably watching training videos, right, anon?'.
Also, always learning new stuff, which is nice.
