Should I get an iPad to read comics/manga on?

I'm leaning an Android tablet like Shield tablet because i know I won't have to worry about file compatibility and Comicat is good for Manga too supporting reading page spreads right to left.

If comics/manga is my priority, should I go iPad or Android?
>>
get an iPad or an Android tablet with 4:3 screen ratio.
>>
Get a fucking android. Then get MangaWatcher, and you are all set.
>>
>>60554544
Most 4:3 Androids suck besides like the Tab S2 unfortunately which is expensive even used. I can get a first gen iPad Air at a decent price.

>>60554567
Looks like an online reader app, I'm a quality obsessed autist who wants to read local files only.
>>
>>60554651
you can download the files tho, it actually has a nice storage management. It is an app you know.
>>
>>60554651
Forgive me its actually called mangawatcherX, the app went through a dev change, but anyway it stores manga by the source (manga panda for example), then manga name, then chapter number, then all the actual jpgs.
>>
>>60554710
Those sites heavily compress scans and make them look like balls.

I want to read the highest quality scans available.
>>
>>60554525
Just get an iPad 2 and manga rock.
>>
Are there no ereaders that can do comics?
>>
>>60554525
Don't get an Android tablet mate.

>>
Depends on a few things things:

-How mobile do you want it to be? A bigger tablet is clearly better for reading manga than a smaller one; but then portability comes into play. 8 inches is certainly acceptable for reading manga, but 9 and 10 inches are better. 12+-inch tablets give you the option to have a double-page view effectively. I'm not as much into comics; but from what I've heard, 10 inches is the bare minimum for Western comics; smaller tablets just don't cut it for that.
-4:3 is your best bet as other anons said. But, I wouldn't say it's an end-all be-all. My tablet isn't 4:3, but it's still pretty great for reading manga on the go. I would also say look out for screen resolution and quality, especially for the smaller-screen tablets. A low resolution makes it harder to read smaller words and takes away the detail. And if you're using it to read, obviously the screen has to be pretty good.
-As for the Apple vs. Android debate, Android offers an awesome, open-source local comic/manga reader that you can get from FDroid, so that's a huge plus.

t. Someone who was in your exact shoes a few weeks ago.
>>
>>60554940
Sorry if I come off as one but it is one of the few non-shit tablet pcs. Though I wouldn't recommend it for reading mangoes, the tab S3 with a high res AMOLED display would be better for that.
>>
I have a jailbroken ipad 2.4 from 2012 for manga using comic flow
>>
>>60555094
Does it support spreads and reading them right to left?
>>
>>60554885
The Kobo Aura HD has a high enough resolution screen zooming and panning would be ass and no colours
>>
Use the app #Mangania to download man's chapters directly in image files.
Search the app on Google, it's not on play store.
I used old es file explorer's internal image viewer to open the images
It works better than any ebook reader
>>
>>60554811
You are allowed to choose from a range of sites, some of them might require a small fee. But I highly recommend the app.

Btw pic related is a pretty accurate comparison between AMOLED used on the tab S 2/3 and IPS used on all ipads.

IPS literally cannot display the color black and so you'll see a cum stain instead with varying degrees of cummy-ness depending on what part of the screen has the pixels on.
>>
>>60555260
That's a pretty gross exaggeration. AMOLED also degrades with age, usually starting with blues
>>
>>60555316
>That's a pretty gross exaggeration.
That's pretty much how it felt when I transitioned from a 6+ to a J7. I was blown away how amazing pictures and mangoes looked despite the J7 having a lower res screen.

OP, I had this exact quandry a few months back, and picked up a yoga tab 3 at walmart. It's got a fucking metal part that flips out as a multiposition stand, and the shape of it makes it amazing to hold on the go. Only like 150 skrillerinos IIRC. Not top of the line hardware, but good screen, decent enough specs, and amazing fucking battery life for the price. That + tachiyomi, I use it as my general media device
>>
>>60555734
True but they're the highest quality AMOLED displays out there. Not like any better display tech exists anyway. IPS gives you eye cancer and TFT gives you eye cancer and cerebral palsy.
>>
>>60555773

I've been looking at one (plus edition tough) and it seems to be riddled with issues.

An iPad or iPad mini is your best bet. Most android tablets are complete ass, and they start "degrading" (for lack of a better term) after a year or so in my experience.
Almost all Android tablets are 16:9 or 16:10 as well. I don't know of any in 4:3, but if they do exist they're likely to be worse than their flagship 16:9/10 counterparts.

iPads get the smartcover which is fucking brilliant if you don't like standard tablet shells.
If you want something to last, get the iPad or iPad Mini 4. I used my iPad 2 daily for over five years before I upgraded to the Air 2 last summer.

>>

e-ink sucks ass. Can't display colors and has a refresh rate of like 10hz. Fuck that.
>>
>>60561015
Alright then, what should we use instead?
>>
>>60557238

AMOLED is God tier. Too bad it's usually overpriced or its the only selling point.

>>60563010

Eink seems pointless for anything other than reading books.
>>
>>60554525
Go ahead and buy the iPad. It'll be the last iOS device you ever buy.
>>
Yes, get an iPad. Air 2 or Pro. Avoid the new one, the display isn't as good (yes, really).

>file compatibility

Chunky, the iPad's best comic reader, accepts CBR and CBZ (which is all you should need), and can pull directly from your cloud storage provider of choice, as well as from local shares.

I have a 12.9" iPad Pro for my comics, and it's face-meltingly awesome, though I get that it's way too expensive for most people.
>>
>>60554525
If comics/manga are your priorities, you need to reevaluate your life choices.
>>
>>60564139

Comics are an amazing and unique art form with a long and vibrant cultural history. Don't let the capeshit fool you, there's a lot under the surface.

Check out /csg/ there's a lot of cheap shit that will serve your manga/comic reading needs for a quarter of the price of an ipad.

Personally I like the teclast x80. The teclast x98 is an ipad 3 clone, and the chuwi hi10 models are a good choice as well.

Just don't forget, they're chink shit, but they're more than good enough for reading comics on them.

Also, many of them come with dual boot OS.

>>
>>60568558
It's old but it checks out. Pretty big battery on that son of a bitch too.
>>
>>60568705
SoC is slow at least when watching 10-bit anime. But unless Samsung releases a tablet with a better screen than this, I'll keep using it.
>>
Actually I've wondering about this a lot as well, but unlike OP I can't afford anything with a recognizable brand name in it. So I'm forced to check chink sites.

So /g/ considering that my budget is basically non-existant what would be the absolute cheapest possible tablet in which I could still enjoy comics with relative comfort?

What's your opinion if any on the chink shit I mentioned above?
>>
>>60569064

Amazon fire 7 maybe. It's cheap and I it isn't absolute shit. The older ones could be flashed with cm for extra points, don't think these new ones can tough.
>>
>>60554525
Have you considered picking up a used Nexus 9 from eBay? I'm typing this on one I bought a while back and I couldn't be happier with it. Very fast, 4:3 screen, high dpi, good battery life and big enough so I don't feel like I'm reading off of a large phone. Best part I got mine for 110 bucks.
I also have an iPad mini 2 but after getting the Nexus, I barely use it.
>>
>>60554913
would this be a worthy upgrade from an og surface pro? i only use it for anime, manga and eroge, which is why i want a windows tablet.
>>
>>60569756
I have this sort of thing against second hand stuff... I kinda prefer to buy new, unless the price is really that good, of course. Unfortunately a quick glance at the local ebay page puts the cheapest nexus 9 at the 200 bucks mark.

>>60569756
Yep seen it, and it's dirt cheap, but the specs aren't that impressive, the screen is only 7 inches with a measly 1024x600. And it's locked nature and need to root it makes it unappealing.

I managed to get a nook ST through ebay back when B&N was closing shop in the UK. Rooted it and put perfect viewer in it. I'm extremely happy with it and use it for reading manga, even if I can only use it in landscape mode.

But yeah I'd like something better.

the chink shit I mentioned has reasonable specs and good screen res for most. Of course quality is the main issue with it.

Although teclast and chuwi seem to have somewhat of a following in xda.

iPad Pro 12" is the best in class for comic/manga reading. The resolution is top of the line and the size makes reading it true to life size. There isn't anything remotely close to it. Surface Pro comes close, but the price difference is absurd. Don't bother with Android tablets, there aren't any comparable offerings in any price bracket.

It's a good setup but the Z8350 is a bit underpowered, specially when it has to move that higher resolution.

Onscripter for android will let you play pretty much any NScripter Visual Novel. Problem is, those are fucking old, and I know nothing about wether there are any working Kirikiri interpreters for stuff like Fate/SN and such.

Or you could get one of those chink tablets with dual boot OS and play your VNs directly on a windows machine.
>>
>>60576213
True dat. It's underpowered for heavy duty stuff (read DOTA and CS). But certainly more than enough to use as an e-reader and it should have more than enough push for light document editing.
I've personally decided on the x80. I think it's a good enough compromise between size, readibility and weight.

Plus I don't think the W10 partition is a useless gimmick.

are you dumb? there's a handful of apps on iOS that allow SCP/FTP (+ Airdrop and iCloud drive, Dropbox, etc) so you can wirelessly dump stuff directly to your device. and most apps (like iComic) support ZIP, RAR, and ultra high resolution image files. I can literally view files that I have to pan 3-4 screens length on my 1440p desktop display without any issue on my iPad. Quick and seamlessly too. TBQH so much so I can't even be arsebothered to read manga on my Winblows machine because it's such a fucking hassle compared to wirelessly dumping shit on my iPad
>>

> Should I get an iPad to read comics/manga on?
Do it. No less than iPad 3. It's very nice to fap with a Retina display.
>>
>>60578062
Oh yes, forgot about the hentai viewing possibilities.

Tablets have made possible to fap in the toilet once again.
>>
>>60554525
I have an Air 2. I don't read manga, but it's a great device in general and I use it for ebooks more than my eink kindle.

Android tablets are a bit shit (I used to have a Nexus 7 and apparently things haven't gotten better), although since you have a single specific use case maybe you can find one that would suffice and save a bunch relative to the iPad.

Most Android tabs seem to be 16:9 though. You'll definitely want 4:3 for reading/manga.
