considering the new surface pro doesn't come with anything but the tablet anymore, is it still worth it or is it better to get a price reduced surface pro 4 in a few months?
yes, SP5 only has kaby lake i7.
SP4 is literally the same form factor
Poor Linux support = garbage.

No point getting the i5 over the m3 now except if you really need more RAM and storage. They will both throttle at similar clocks because Passive cooling.
The i5 may have a slightly large cooling block, but it just buys a couple more seconds of turbo before falling off to the same low clocks.

By a few months you mean now, right? Surface Pro 4 price already dropped $100-$200 today.

naw
I have sp3.. bought i7 sp4 and returned it and continued using sp3 til now.. the battery life was terrible on sp4! save a little and get the new one. or get an sp3. the improvement in battery life is a huge draw for me and ill probably buy a month or two after launch to make sure there are no issues.. that said, am very happy with sp3 with sp4 type cover.
There are no good alternatives to Surface.
I mean, chink tablets have non-laminated display, which is quite garbage IMO + the CPU is Atom.
iPad has iOS, which is too close for any other use you might enjoy later on.
Android tablet might be good, I actually don't understand why people say they are garbage, because it seems a meme with no real value.
