Linux Mint or Elementary OS.

Learning GNU/Linux isn't about not being stupid as much as it is about having patience to read the fine manuals.

If you are able to learn using a manual then you'll likely be able to learn how to use GNU/Linux.

And seriously, do this. Gentoo is a very hard distribution to maintain and I do not recommend it for a beginner. I really don't.

Gentoo has a very handy handbook that let's you install it by typing in shell commands. You'll learn from doing this. As I said, it's not for beginners and you should probably install something like Fedora or Ubuntu or Linux mint as your first distribution afterwards. But you should install gentoo once for the learning experience.

My 68 year old mother uses Fedora and she can barely work her TVs remote control. I'm sure you too can figure out how to use it.

I would simply like to interject for one second. What you're calling Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've of late taken to calling it, GNU and Linux. With a tiling wm + dmenu + a good terminal + firefox to google when you're in trouble, you learn fast and you start to enjoy being able to control most things from GUI, especially once you realize it's faster than otherwise
