well i think as a guy said last thread im going to go with openbox + tint2, but id like to ask why use it over i3 or awesome? How do I setup a printer in xfce?
I've been using Linux for only a couple of months with kde and switched to xfce yesterday.
Kde has an easy to use gui for setting up a printer in the settings menu. Apparently xfce has nothing to help with printers built in.
I tried system-config printer so far but I can't get it working.

I'm using Arch with xfce and lightdm.

1. install CUPS
2. install extra CUPS "drivers" as needed (gutenprint, hplip etc)
3. start CUPS

if you use a hp printer, install the hplip GUI and set up your printer with that.

You use it because you prefer it. Openbox is great as I like the very minimal way it handles everything. If you like hot keys and shortcuts Openbox can be configured to enable that, but it doesn't have that out of the box like i3. For me personally I use a config of dmenu and tint2 to get it just how I like it.

Linux has several problems. Chief among them is a community full of social misfits and nerds who aren't helpful and can be rude. I was using Solydx the other day. I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Google, is in fact, NSA/Google, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, NSA plus Google. Google is not an evil corporation unto itself, but rather another corporate component of a fully functioning NSA system made useful by the NSA PRISM project, Boundless Informant, and vital Bullrun backdoors comprising a full Ministry of Truth as exposed by Snowden.

Many computer users run a modified version of the NSA system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of NSA which is widely used today is often called “Google”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the NSA, developed by the NSA Project.

There really is a Google, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Google is the search engine, etc: the web apps in the system that direct the user's attention. The search engine is an essential part of an espionage system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete espionage system. Google is normally used in combination with the NSA espionage system: the whole system is basically NSA with Google added, or NSA/Google. All the so-called “Google” website is really the data collection frontend of NSA/Google.

Communism is great on paper, not in practice. It requires a species that's not greedy at all and is always willing to help other people for survival's sake, and we're not that species, we used to be maybe; but we can't return to that primitive lifestyle nor we should.

That doesn't mean capitalism is perfect (1%) but rather the best we can do; at least for now.

There are many forms of communism.
The one that the Russians chose was one that enforced compulsory atheism and that pissed off a lot of people in the west.
A form of communism that allows for multiple belief systems should have few problems.
The rulers of communist Russia were academics with no appreciation for human frailty. They wanted to rule absolutely. They were set against the prevailing orthodoxy, not unlike the French Commune. As a result it was necessary for millions of resisters and/or non-conformists to die.

So on my void install sound is suddenly gone.

I never put much thought into it because it just werked, and I had the widget in the panel and my laptop's hardware volume keys worked out of the box and everything worked well. Suddenly the widget is gone, hardware buttons don't work, and there is no sound. And I absolutely don't remeber what it was using before, thought it wasn't pulseaudio.

What the fuck happened and how do I get it back?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>60537117
First off, Linux hasn't been free since 1996. There is nonfree software shipped with it (called blobs).
Second, the GPL doesn't say that you have to

Linus Torvalds is a retard if he thinks we should refer to an entire OS by the name of an exchangeable kernel. The truth is that Linus NEEDS it to be called Linux. When the Tech CEOs of Apple and Google and IBM, and others hear about "Linux", they assume they are talking about the OS and not just the kernel. They then dump billions into developing "Linux" with the intent of improving the OS, but in actuality much of that money goes to over-developing the kernel (and thus the Linux Foundation gets a big chunk of that money under false pretenses). Basically, Linus wants everyone to call the GNU POSIX operating systems "Linux" so that his rent gets paid. He'd call your Android and Router and your parent's smartTV "Linux" too if he could get away with it. Linus Torvalds is a piece of shit.

People call it Linux because they are mislead by the media, which is sponsored by companies who obviously dislike to speak in terms of freedom, so they avoid "GNU" and "Free Software" and instead shill "Open Source" and "Linux".
If you call it Linux, you play for their team and help them censoring thoughts about freedom, which is the source the community was built on. This is the main problem, not the nitpicking about correct terminology.

Here is how to get sound on a minimal install without the insanity of pulseaudio:

FIrst, you need to erase .asounrc in your home and asound.conf in /etc, after that purge pulseaudio. And when I mean purge, I mean purge.

Then, you need to identify your available devices in /proc/asound/modules, just

cat /proc/asound/modules

Here is my /proc/asound/modules

0 snd_usb_audio
1 snd_hda_intel

Now put them in order in the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, by assign an index from -2 to 2, making the preferred output the lowest number. As I know I have two devices I want the one that says usb because that is my headphone, so in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf I put

options snd_usb_audio enable=1 index=0
options snd_hda_intel index=1

Notice the index.

Restart the computer and you have perfect sound, as well in the browser.

Mail me at "[email protected]" if you have any questions.

Sadly, a kernel by itself gets you nowhere. To get a working system you
need a shell, compilers, a library etc. These are separate parts and may
be under a stricter (or even looser) copyright. Most of the tools used
with linux are GNU software and are under the GNU copyleft. These tools
aren't in the distribution - ask me (or GNU) for more info.

Right. So NamelessOS then?

Seriously, this is retardation. Busybox is not an OS, but the Busybox utils with the Linux kernel make an OS together. You can add a GNU compiler (or a non-GNU one), you can add any DE, but the defining feature is the use of Busybox, so I believe Busybox/Linux is as good a name as any.

Linux is used by itself, or with small other programs, in some appliances. These small software systems are a far cry from the GNU/Linux system. Users do not install them on PCs, for instance, and would find them rather disappointing.
