Memes aside, Ubuntu (LTS releases) or Linux Mint are probably your best choices to start. The real difference between distributions is the choice of software. Some people prefer OpenRC, some people prefer Systemd. Some people prefer Apt, some people prefer Pacman. Over time and use, you might find yourself curious to experiment with other flavors. Maybe you'll find yourself enjoying something else more enjoyable. Or maybe you'll stick with Ubuntu. Freedom to pick, play with, and discard at your whim. Oh and none of your games will work (well), but games are for children.

>>60511862
Xubuntu, ignore the Mint sheep. Mint is just Ubuntu with less compatibility and updates held back. Unless you really want Cinnamon there is 0 reason to choose Mint over Ubuntu.
>>
>>60511862
What are your specs on your laptop to begin with?

Also make sure that your laptop's hardware is compatible with Linux.

>Ubuntu will drop Unity and is going to use GNOME again
>LinuxMint is Ubuntu, but their purpose is to remove eventual source code that would betray your privacy (as Canonical did with the Amazon ads). They may have drivers compatibility issues
>Fedora is backed by RedHat and looks pretty nice, they share developers with RedHat and GNOME.
