I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Yes, Linux by default is the most insecure system available today unless you do the following:

- you configure iptables (or an external router) to block all ports you don't use
- you use firejail to run your browser in, or you run a VM with the browser in it (KVM good for immediately loading up a browser in a VM)
- you keep on top on security updates, you should see your distro's documentation how to automatically script this
- you should read pdfs in a VM, or temp filesystem/jail/chroot
- you should install portable LibreSSL, it just compiles clean and make install is simple though you would have to keep this updated and you probably won't.
>>
>>60504524
I try void linux today. But, truly i don't feel secure in Void. Void it's trustworthy? it's paranoia? I want a secure system.

Grsecurity stopped releasing public patches, I think (did they change this?) only Hardened Gentoo project is allowed access to the testing patches anymore.

Probably the best Linux version as way as security out of the box (meaning by default, this is activated) is Fedora/Redhat. Latest Fedora uses Wayland, and at least SELinux policies so you can jail things. They're also the first with any updates because they're commercial distros.

Otherwise just run any FSF approved distro, and in a VM run SubgraphOS for whatever privacy related things you need.

>Linux by default is the most insecure system available today
wtf I hate linux now
>>
>>60504682
No, hardened team will have to fork grsec or use something else.

>>60504645
There's little difference in security between distros. Package update policy, security software available. Xen is in the repos, SELinux is not "properly" implemented yet, gcc and the kernel come already with hardened flags and what no. It's pretty okay, but it's no gentoo hardened. The latter comes with costs of time and performances, though, so you have to balance what you want and what you can afford to spend time with.

Please /fglt/, I need your help
I'm on Kubuntu and updated last night, everything was doing alright. Today, I boot up and NetworkManager won't connect to my wireless network and stalls at configuring interface.
If I connect manually to the network trough wpa_supplicant
sudo wpa_supplicant -Dnl80211 -iwlx002275767542 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

sudo dhclient wlx002275767542

everything works as usual. Is there anything I can do?
I tried to follow Archwiki's wpa_supplicant page and tried to
enable [email protected]

but Kubuntu tells me that there's no such file or directory. Maybe this is only an Arch thing?

I try Gentoo If it was not for my shit-tier pc. I personally don't like the Fedora/Redhat way. Thanks for your tips!
>>
>>60504806
It depends on what you do, probably for "personal" use it's around 200$, if my memory serves me well.. however they have a strict policy about leaking stuff and will find a way to end business with you.

Grsec's a fucking mess, but it's the ony thing we had in the last decade. Perhaps something better will spawn from its ashes, but I doubt it.
>>
>>60504806
I just found what it costs, starts at $200/month to receive patches you can't redistribute and they are unlikely to let anybody except large corporations use it due to fear of leaks.

So apparently there was some upstream attempt to port Grsec/Pax changes and google chose to not work with them which is why they went fully subscription only http://www.openwall.com/lists/kernel-hardening/2017/05/11/2

Also it's highly annoying that both pipacs (Pax 'team') http://phrack.org/issues/66/2.html and spender write highly autist walls of text and could not be more dramatic if they were 14yr old girls.

tl;dr kernel security in Linux is totally fucked for the forseeable future
>>
>>60504990
Both PAX guys and spengler are autistic. Can't blame them when Intel took their patches and put their logo on it, but that's excepted for an open source project. Still, that's not a good way to end it. A shame hardening is not a priority for the kernel devs. They said they'd accept patches but grsec code quaity made that impossible for them to accept. There was that project. what was it, KSSP? I don't remember the name, they took part of grsec code and tried to rewrite it. Don't know what happened after but I agree, that's bad for sure, especially us paranoid freaks, kek.

KSPP debacle is elaborated here http://www.openwall.com/lists/kernel-hardening/2017/05/11/2

The basic gestalt:
>so what do we have so far about this KSPP business? Google and other companies made a decision to get our work upstream using their own resources only - so far so good, it's their business in every sense of the word. not involving us however turned out to be an unwise decision when they realized that their employees are completely unprepared for this work (we'll discuss some examples later). this then led to all kinds of social engineering attempts at trying to get us to help them out - all without getting paid for our time, as if we were just supposed to drop all other work and spend our free time on fixing their botched up attempts. as if this still wasn't disgusting and outragous enough, they went on the combative and had the guts to accuse us of not wanting to cooperate without also mentioning that they expected all this work from us for free

tl;dr
-KSPP is a joke project to just cut+paste grsec patches into upstream
-nobody at google knows what they're doing and couldn't get it to merge
-they refused to pay pipacs or spender for help doing so
-????
-there presently is no effort to secure the Linux kernel whatsoever and it's business as usual

I finally uncucked myself from wangblows for a lot of reasons, moving to Fedora now and maybe later to another distro, but the only software that doesn't have a real alternative is Photoshop, so I think I have two options: either run a VM or use Wine/Playonlinux.
I know the performance will take a hit either way, but what I want to know is if anyone has tried these methods and knows how fast/stable they are.
As far as I've read, the VM approach will make it run slower and Wine/PoL has random bugs.
Also, which one is the latest version you've tried? I would like to use CC 2017 mainly for Content-aware among other options, but I could go back to, at most, CS6.

I think this other one is Windows exclusive but I'll ask anyway: any search software like Everything? I was quite used to its speed.

Linux is the name of the kernel that Linus Torvalds developed starting in 1991. The operating system in which Linux is used is basically GNU with Linux added. To call the whole system "Linux" is both unfair and confusing. Please call the complete system GNU/Linux, both to give the GNU Project credit and to distinguish the whole system from the kernel alone.
>>
>>60506045
I use it but I have custom hardware of mainly free drivers so haven't had a problem. You can run it in a VM if your proprietary motherboard or ethernet or w/e has issues.

It uses the Linux libre kernel so will be missing driver blobs.

You can also just drop Guix into any existing distro like Debian or whatever. More info here

hi friendos

as per installgentoo wiki:The Java and Java Deployment Toolkit Plug-Ins are installed with the Java Runtime Environment. While the Runtime Environment itself is often necessary for the use of desktop Java software, these plug-ins are extremely vulnerable and rarely used. They should be disabled in all cases.

I know I could load Linux from a flash drive or CD to test drive it but that feels like it would be a waste of time; if I'm going to get it, I would rather jump right in. Yeah. I mean, I have made an Arch system before, and I enjoy the Arch ecosystem, but maintaining and setting up my desktop was a chore. I like the idea of semi rolling release distros. Give a week to test it out on the system then push them. Solus and Manjaro do this and it's a great comprimise.

Linux Mint (Laggy)

At this point I don't care. Everything I've tried either uses too much resources, was too unstable, or both. Some create even more problems (Unity). All I want is something that works. I don't care what distro can provide it or how much tuning it takes. I just want something that can potentially work. I highly doubt I'm the only one here with a HiDPI display...

it doesnt matter if a web service is free software or not, since you aren't running the code
all you need to know is if it tracks or not
search engines like ddg, seark or startpage get google results, but they get them using the engine running on the server, so you get the results, but you aren't tracked
>>
>>60510047
I like searx because it gives you a bunch of engines you can enable or disable to your likings, there is a proxy link and a cached link for all results which is comfy and I think it's the only engine that actually delvers source code so you can run your own version.

I found that tlp was significantly worsening performance, in the desktop on gnome. I changed it the CPU P-States setting to adaptive-performance instead of adaptive-power, in /etc/default/tlp. Tlp is fine, it has a ton of useful tweaks if you need to squeeze a bit more battery out of your system. The defaults are good enough in most cases that you can enable it and forget about it. The only things most people ever have to tweak is sata power saving, which can corrupt btrfs, and sometimes the less aggressive CPU settings can take a while to get to high power. Also, the WiFi tweaks can make it a lot slower so I turn them off.

Desktop environment is all the programs and display manager is the gui right?
>>
>>60511428
the desktop environment is a set of programs providing you a GUI desktop experience. A window manager, desktop manager, file manager, settings, taskbar etc. A desktop env. ships all these things and more.

A display manager is rather a login manager: you provide credentials and it starts a desktop environment or window manager (or just a plain X terminal) as your user.

Basically: most packages can be installed from your package manager, not going to the website and clicking download and then clicking through the installer. Try to use free+open source software alternatives to windows stuff because it's easier to install and works better.
Also it helps to know a basic bit of terminal stuff-
The ones you should learn at first are mv, cp, ls, pwd and cd as well as cat.

So my parents are on an older Windows 7 desktop and they don't use it for much. The system is slowing down quite a bit, so I've been wondering if I should install Ubuntu GNOME on their computer and back up their files?

The only programs they use are Firefox, MS Office, and the default image/video programs.Would OpenOffice or LibreOffice support everything they would need? It's mainly used as a FB shitpost machine for my dad and a photo collection for my mom.

tl;dr I let them try a Live CD demo and they seemed okay with it, but I just want to be sure about the document compatibility.

You have two ways to fix this: either run the chsh command as root, or directly edit the password file. If you can log in as root, you can try either way. If you can't, you'll have to mount your root filesystem on some other computer (just take the SD card and mount it in some other GNU/Linux computer - a different OS probably won't be able to read the filesystem).

I'll give you more details if I can but Hiro-pyon is being a faggot and not letting me post filenames and code snippets.

No real precautions, I just read what apt-get dist upgrade or emerge -avDuN world would do.

That being said packages which get into debian sid are already tested to some extent by the debian team and in gentoo packages are usually marked as stable by either the gentoo team or the devs.

Nothing? Why would I need to waste bandwith and time twice? It's not really necessary, if there's an issue it will be promptly talked in the community, and most of the times it'll be easily fixable. Arch sometimes changes dependencies and libraries, but it doesn't really break that much.

no testing is done at all on arch. half an hour or so after a new version is released it's pushed into the repos. they say on the site that the user is responsible for the stability of the system, so if it breaks you only have yourself to blame.
>>
>>60513942
I'm pretty sure logind is there for every systemd system, but you can check if its dbus interface is present:
gdbus introspect --system --dest org.freedesktop.login1 --object-path /org/freedesktop/login1
>>
What do you call that when you enter a command that doesn't exist on your system and then the repos are automatically searched and if found the output is
$ command
command may be found in the following packages:
extra/command 4.0-2 /usr/bin/command

and if it's not found
bash: command: command not found

I enabled this on Arch, idk why and I forgot how I enabled it and what it was called.
It pisses that every time I mistype a command I have to wait for like 2-3 seconds until the repos are searched.

1. No competent handwritting recognition

im sure typing is faster than both those input methods. what do you really need an ((AI assistant)) for anyway?

We have Mycroft, don't know how well it works. Never used it.

Although i3 is way easier to do so, those window mangers require me to make my own theme and manage a gtk/qt theme that works with it.

see above

I literally have only seen one person in existence be able to pull HiDPI off on XFCE that looks any good, and it was a random anon here who never responded to my questions.

I would actually like that.
Something like myscript that converts it into latex equations would be cool.
Haven't seen anyone do it as a free desktop application.
Don't know why, don't seem like an impossible thing to create, guess nobody had the time.

What project are you referring to?
Not that 10 year old project that read your emails out loud or something right?

how to set up gdm in a way that it leaves screen on, displaying time and background and not goes to black screen imidiately after locking the screen?
>>
>>60515175
They're both on separate timers I think, you just need to set them differently.
You can google how to change the time it takes for your screen to turn off, I'm not sure if there are any GUI applications that do it, maybe your distro already has a tool for it.

But if not you can always use the CLI tool "xset" to change it.
>>
>>60515223
i don't really use the timeout, i always alt+L when i leave my pc, what i want is when i lock my screen manually it displays the display manager instead of a black screen

>find torrent on piratebay with 7 seeds

I know I'm a pleb for using piratebay and I don't want to start a torrent client war, but why does rtorrent do this? It's not the first time I've had this problem.
>>
>>60515316
when did piratebay become pleb tier
>>
>>60515380
Well compared to private trackers it's pretty plebby. Getting into private trackers isn't a journey I wish to embark on though.

Why is it not possible for someone to write open source drivers for Intel wifi?

lol

-lack of public documentation
-reverse engineering is a bitch and Intel may sue
-non-free firmware is required for the hw to operate

Would there be a relatively straightforward way for me to simply plug in a USB and have it image a pc with linux without any user input?

A shell script would do it, I guess, but I am looking for something with zero input at all, outside of plugging in a USB and basically rebooting it after it's done.
>>
>>60515724
im not to sure on this method but i guess it could be a starting point:
there's a module for perl called Device::USB, i suppose you could run it in the background, wait for the usb drive to be put in and when the system notification of a new usb disk displays, it runs the shell command to write the image to it? or am i going mental with this

so after installing it fails mounting my lvm entries from fstab (timeout after 90s) and goes to maintenance mode, when i then press ctrl-d it just boots normally with everything mounted
if i boot with sysvinit everything is okay too

I think my kernel might be already mounting the lvm volumes before the systemd udev mounting thing is even started?
>>
>>60516222
*so after installing systemd, it fails mounting [..]
>>
>>60515490
That sucks. It's the only thing preventing me from installing GuixSD on my lappy.
Maybe I'll think about buying a usb wifi adapter or something, but that's kind of annoying
>>
>>60514129
bug reports could be an indication of people using arch and finding bugs, whereas what the fuck is manjaro
>>
>>60516222
the kernel dosent mount anything by its self
Double check your fstab for duplicate entries and check your udev rules

Can i get some help?
How would I fix this? The menu bar is black and it makes it hard to see it. I'm running openbox and I don't remember what I did to do this.
>>
>>60517129
I'm guessing it's a broken GTK-3 theme.

At some point GTK-3 completely changed its syntax for themes causing a lot of themes to just break and show up all dark like that.

Basically the GTK-3 theme is determined by a directory named "gtk-3.0" in your themes directory.
If it's not there then GTK-3 will use the defaults, but if it is there and it's a broken theme then it will show up dark.

So there's 2 ways you can fix it. Either delete the "gtk-3.0" directory in your current theme, or download/select a different theme with a working GTK-3 theme (they're hard to come by, most of them are broken now I think)
