is 25 too late to study programming? i've heard people say it's like music, if you don't start young you'll never catch up
>>
No.
>>
>>60492570
No you don't have to start young but some people just aren't cut out for it.
>>
>>60492570
yep lol. sorry u missed the programming train
>>
>is 25 too late to study programming?

Yes 25 is to late to "start" anything. If you don't have something going for you by now you never will.
>>
>>60492570
I was twenty-four and working a shit job as a Fedex courier. I taught myself C# in the course of about seven months before I was able to get a Junior dev job. It's not too late.
>>
>>60492570
Nah. As long as you're not retarded you'll be fine.

Codecademy has a decent python tutorial. It's free and covers some basics about programming.
>>
>>60492570
25 is too late to live, grandpa. Fire up the ol' neckrope.
>>
>>60492570
hey - I was almost going to post this on https://twitter.com/ginanecomments but that would be cruel

answer is no.

no age is too late for learning programming and doing something profitable with it.
>>
>>60492585
>>60492601
wrong.

cut off age is 23 lmfao sorry
>>
>>60492601
Doesn't fedex actually pay a lot
>>
>>60492622
Fuck now I will never fulfill my dream of making software advanced enough to render life-like images of child pornography. Why even live???
>>
>>60492570
Just do a comp.sci degree at a decent university now, you are certainly not too old for it yet.

Actually, doing the hard mode learning at this age usually is almost a bonus for employers. Some DO like slightly more mature people with a bit of willpower.

> music
> catch up
Lel. Look, you'll in all likelihood not be a music or programming superstar.

But unlike with music where reusing the ton of existing works would kinda do the job for just about anyone, people still need their software to run businesses.
>>
web dev no, actual programming yes
>>
>>60492570
Sorry but you are about 10 years too late.
It's not like tech-related companies send middle-aged employees who've never touched a computer before to programming courses.
>>
>>60492649
I started at ~$18 an hour but becoming full-time is something they only offer to people who've worked there 4+ years.

With only 24-26 hours a week I was making a bit more than minimum wage at 40 but at least I did get decent benefits though.

>>60492622
Gee I'll let my employer who pays me $85k a year know first thing Monday morning.
>>
Anyone who replies anything other than "No it's not to late" is a narcissistic fuck who is only looking out for their own interests and thinks that they, their interests, and their fields of study are special snowflakes. Shit changes all the time. The fathers of modern computing obviously didn't start programming when they were children; it wasn't even around. In fact, those who already program today will probably have to completely re-learn everything every five years or so to keep up with the progress of computing. On the other side of the coin, shit ain't changed since forever: there's always been new stuff to learn. You and I aren't special, your field and my field isn't special, and your interests and my interests aren't special, so fuck off and stop trying to drag other people along with you.
>>
>>60492570
It's not too late, but there would be an age gap if you start as a junior dev. You would be treated as the weird old man.
>>
I chose a meme course in College

>Computer Programmer Analyst

Am I fucked?
>>
>>60492570
I would argue music is more about being creative. You can bullshit basic music and learn by ear. You actually need to learn programming because everyone will know when you're bullshitting it.

You dumb asshole, you were never gong to be the best in the world at it even if you started when you were three years old. Genetic freaks would outpace you in an afternoon without breaking a sweat.
And if you don't need to be the best, why the fuck are you worrying about how good you'll be? Damn near anyone can be competent with a couple years of study and practice.
Is competent good enough for you? Then do it.
Is competent not good enough? Then sit in the dark alone and useless until you die.
Nobody cares.
>>
>>60493574
"Your" ability. Jewgle gods decide whether or not you drag.
>>
>>60492570
If you're of an Asian race you have a bit longer as complete development is somewhat delayed genetically. Otherwise I've heard you have some plasticity even into your mid thirties though that may just be for specific types of skills (tasks maybe, languages no). If you're a groid or a spicy, don't even try, no matter what age.
>>
No.
Old programmers couldn't afford a computer when kids (when computers were huge) and only came close to one when studying at a university or working.
Nowadays most people can have a computer but there are a lot of shitty programmers (just see the js "programmers")

If you fail it's because you are dumb, not because your age.
>>
We have this thread every goddamn day, the sticky needs to be updated.

it's funny how "absolute" and "sure" people are about facts like these. they know nothing about brain development, let alone individual brain development. piss off

1. SysAdmin
>Everyone is nice to you, since you are the computer god. 90% of the time you can be lazy.

2. DB architect
>Unless you fuck up big time (i.e. no backups) you can't do anything wrong. All you have to do is fixing a slow query every now and chose between oracle and ms sql (based on what you know best).

3. Testing
>Not much reputation among others, also first jobs where money in a company is getting saved. But the job is dead simple and testers are always in demand. They come and go.

3. Backend developer
>With a little knowledge of MongoDB and SQL, one or two scripting languages and a couple of meme words you're basically just copy&pasting things between various "apps" in laravel, django, rails or node..

4. Tech support.
>"Did you plug in the mouse? Yeah? And the Screen is on? No? So glad I could help you.."

5. DevOps
>All you'll ever need is Docker and something like Puppet or Chef.

6. Scrum Master
>Basically you're a manager for hipsters that can't stand harsh criticism very well and need some motivation every now and then. Downside is the stupid stand up meeting every morning to make sure the code monkeys are all at work.

7. CodeMonkey
>You learn something like Java or C++ and code do what the Flow Chart tells you. If you don't ask any questions it's pretty comfy, just don't think your boss wants some "optimizations" or your opinion about what's reasonable and what's not.

8. FrontEnd
>1) Pick a fancy name like UX engineer, UI designer or whatever sounds cool to you.
>2) Be better with CSS than anybody else in your company.
>3) Ignore the customers, they don't know what they want and will always blame you, no matter what you do. So just ignore them, do your job and sell your product.

9) SoftwareEngineer
>You are a code monkey, but you also have to think for yourself and take the heat when your boss is pissed. Not comfy!

10) BigData / AI
>Messy, no jobs, a meme bubble that will burst soon, too much theory. Nope.

Pick your poison OP
>>
>>60493639
Nothing is easy if you have to work within a strict platform.
>>
This meme is only because young people tend to have way more time to learn new things, not so much because they're better at it.
When you're 25 you have taxes, rent, etc. When you're 15 you have nothing but time.
>>
>>60493906
But if you're NEETing it up at 25+ you have even more time than a teen!
>>
>>60493918
Exactly.
you don't even have school to ignore.

>fucked around for a few years, graduating community college this quarter w general associate degree
>I'm actually decent at math, but because I moved halfway through my senior year of HS I've only taken up through AP precalc--no actual calc classes

TLDR; I'm transferring to a Uni next fall, but I've only taken up through precalc. Is it too late for me to go for computer science?
>>
>>60492570
No, it's not too late. It's not really too late with music either. You'll never be a world class musician or programmer, but most people don't have the innate ability to do that even if they start young.
You either have autism or you don't. It can't be learned no matter how young you start.
>>
Can someone help me. I'm still wet behind the ears at age 19. I want to get into coding but don't know where to start. A friend recommended C so that's what I want to learn. I'm using VS Code but don't know how to actually use it. Help please.
>>
>>60494082
>A friend recommended C
Shoot this "friend" and use a different language. Do not get memed by /g/ into learning "how a computer actually werks!!!"

As for VS Code, it's a text editor. What the hell do you think it's going to do?
>>
>>60494082
Don't start with C, start with Python and if that isn't too hard then you can come back to C later on.
>>
>>60494082
Codeacademy's python tutorial. Or youtube has some decent instructional playlists, one of MIT's full lecture sets is on there
>>
>>60492570
It's never too late to learn anything. You'll realize this when you realize how even great people in their field began later in life.

Ignore those saying otherwise. They aren't perceptive.
>>
>>60493626
>>>/the_donald/
>>>/spiritscience/
>>
No, absolutely not. While it is true that you do not adapt as easily to new ideas as somebody younger one big advantage is that at an older age you have better discipline and organization skills and know how to structure learning processes effectively on your own. So, you are good!
>>
>>60493762
sysadmin and DB architect are not comfy as fuck jobs

it involves developing an adderall addiction, being on call 24/7, and killing yourself because you have to work in sharepoint.
>>
I work as a software engineer. Some of the best programmers I work with didn't learn how to code -at all- until they were passed their 30s.

I started developing when I was 16 and I'm 27 now. However, there are some people who have only been programming a few years that I absolutely take advice from. It's never too late to start. Just start and be consistent with practicing. Eventually you'll be amazed at what you can do.

Good luck.
>>
>>60492570
Nah man, I started learning my first programming language 2 years ago at age 21 and I'm earning six figures as a developer now. You got some catching up to do though - you got to be working just about every waking hour. Start now you fat fuck.
>>
>>60492570
I started late, and I am now earning $30/hr as a software engineer at a small company
>>
>>60492570
I hacked around slackware and RenegadeBBS in the early 90s but didn't really do any real programming besides compiling my own software and customizing it.

At age 36 I started taking CMU courses as I got interested in it again.

Age 38 I got a job in NYC at an algorithmic trading firm.

Currently age 40, left the trading firm and now work for a private hedge fund. I'm the youngest person there. I also sell a bot on bitcointalk that is doing really well.

Never too old to learn most of my coworkers are well into their 50s/60s and the head guy is 73yrs old.

Is 22 too late to start studying human medicine? I have an engineering degree but I hate the field.
>>
Learn to manage programmers. Programming is for early tweens and pajeets, older men lead.
>>
>>60492570
It's not about age as it is frame of mind, lots of people have picked stuff up even at old age, but you have to inherently attuned to a certain way of processing information.

If you want to pick up music, you actually have to be good at hearing music, some people will listen to a song and immediately notice any issues with the recording, while others won't care. Give that person an instrument and formal training and they may get pretty good at it.

If you want to pick up art, some people also have a general knack for it, give them a brush and they'll do a reasonably good impression of what they see right away, all they need is formal training so that their technique is up to par with their vision.

Coding and math both require highly abstract thinking because unlike just about anything else, there is no "physical" representation for what you're manipulating, which the human brain wasn't evolved to process naturally. Coding is worse than math in that regard, because with math you can at least imagine shapes and situations representing the problem, but code won't compile until it's already complete.

Loads of jobs desu, and they pay well

Thinking of moving into Data Engineering, it's just moving data around with python, ezpz
>>
>>60494700
What did you work as in the algo firm?

Really want to get into that field, how did you do it?
>>
It's not like music. You can learn it at any age really. Whether you'll get a job with it is another question though.
>>
Learn Python, it's all you need.

import math();

wa la, 300k starting.
